What are the chances of getting accepted off the alternate list?

Ok - i finally got a response. I got put on the waiting list. Not what I was hoping to hear. But she also told me that it's the waiting list, and not the alternate list. She further stated that it's better to be on the waiting list. (no info on how big the list is or how high on the list i was.)

So, here are my questions:

what's the difference? Is there a difference? Does it matter?

I understand that not many people will turn down an acceptance to a school like UCLA - so why does UCLA bother with two different lists? In other words, if not everyone on the waiting list is going to get in, then why do they bother having an alternate list at all?

I know my chances are slim - but i'm just curious.

Ok - i have a bit more info on the waiting list. I'm told the waiting list is quite small (but i don't have exact numbers), and that they don't rank within the WL (maybe within the alternate list).

What are your thoughts on this?

So, basically, considering the high popularity of UCLA, those who are on the alternate list have extremely low chance....

If this was only a month ago...I already dropped biochem since i got no love from them. To get accepted I'd have to take it in the summer, which I cant. Too bad I woulda loved to go there with u guys. 🙁
