UCLA dentist school scandal

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
😱😱😱:scared::scared::scared::scared:😱😱😱😱

In a time when you expect professional schools to not give preferential treatment regardless of race, nationality, or in this case, the stuffed linings of donor's pockets, here comes a story that just makes you angry. I visited UCLA and like any institution it was a great place to go to school but if the scandal "goes all the way to the top" then I'd be even more worried, i.e. if we see several Deans resigning, then I'd know there was an admission by the guilty parties. But right now, like the UCLA student said, there are def a few bad apples and to have the entire School of Dentistry disgraced because of these donations, is unfair to the student body. The administration, on the other hand, still has some explaining to do. On a different note, you think Hillary or Obama got anywhere without huge donations from certain publc interest groups, and guess who's going to get preferential treatment when either of those two are hired: you guessed it, those same public interest groups. Sorry for the segway. Either which way, we know stuff like this exists and when UCLA gets front page headlines, someone better have a good explanation. Personally, I don't there's nothing any of us can really do to change it except get angry and move on.

Is it really illegal though? Probably just frowned upon and hurts the reputation of the school when its that obvious. I would think that most people can assume stuff like this happens in many other schools too...

seeing as how UCLA is a state school, it's probably more of a legal issue than at a private school. Actually, i don't see how it would be illegal at a private school. But then again, i'm not a lawyer.

It looks like it is just the orthodontic program, not the DDS. The article also mentioned that they gave preferential treatment to UCLA students "who have worked in the research laboratories of orthodontics faculty," but isn't that normal? They know these students and that they will be dedicated to the program.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. I mean isn't that the point?!?!?!?!!

Does anyone think that UOP, in some way, does not favor students that are legacy status w/ family that donates?

by the way, also states evidence of cheating at USC, LLU, and NYU. man, all these scandals lately (UMDNJ, UNLV), does anyone actually do work in d-school anymore?

I don't know about legality, but a person can easily sue a public school and get millions of dollars if they get rejected from the school and can prove their rejection over someone else's acceptance was not based upon merit but was based upon some other extenuating factor, like wealth. RIght there alone UCLA should be careful...one suit can cost them more than 20 donars could put together.

Privates can do almost whatever they want...legacy etc.

Pacific is definitely willing to put more time into considering an app if you come from a long line of pacific grads or donors...but it's not always the case. Dean Emeritus Dugoni's son was rejected from our school and Dean Dugoni is a $1,000,000 donor to our school. Also, he was dean of the school at the time when his son was rejected. There are plenty of other "I was rejected from pacific even though my Uncle, Dad, Mom, etc. went there. You don't hear about it all the time cause of the overwhelming #s of kids with connections that get in every year, but there are plenty without connections that get in and plenty with connections that don't and go off to other schools...

Well, if they are going to sell my spot, i think i should at least get a cut of the profit.

ONLY GOD KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON AT PRIVATE SCHOOLS...If UCLA does it, I am sure private schools do it as well...This is not fair ...

the story in LA times states involvement of NYU, but that is untrue.. the source was UCLA officials who stated that ada was investigating them, usc, llu, and nyu...we received an email today from dean bertolami :

"LA times story stated that the American Dental Association is investigating allegations of cheating by at least a dozen UCLA students as well as students from USC, Loma Linda University and New York University, UCLA officials said. The students were alleged to have improperly obtained questions to a test that is a step toward fulfilling qualifications for a license to practice dentistry."

New York University and its College of Dentistry are deeply disturbed that the
LA Times ran this claim without seeking any comment from NYU or, apparently, confirmation from the ADA.

The facts are these:
º NYUCD has received no notice about or information about any such investigation.

º We have been in touch with Dr. Laura Neumann, the Senior Vice President of
the ADA, who would be responsible for any such investigation. She told me that
NYUCD is not under investigation.

º I have also been in touch with UCLA's Dean, who also indicated that he had no
knowledge of NYU being under investigation and cannot explain our presence in
the story.

We have written to the LA Times reporter asking for a retraction of this portion
of the story and an explanation of how this false assertion came to be in the
paper.
"

^damn your ontop of things, appreciate the assertion from the Dean. NYU is one of my top choices

I think this is the reason why if I get accpetances from big name schools it will really make me feel special, considering I have zero connections and that I have actually earned it. I have met so many ppl at interviews that have current brothers, dads, blah blah at that school. I mean, I guess it is life. I am not crying about it

i'm sure things like this happen everywhere...people who have connections with a school do have a better chance at getting in...its nothing new

Here's another scandal. I just got the interview info e-mail from UCLA and it says that lunch WILL NOT be provided.

lol I just got the same e-mail, you would think with all the donations they could give us lunch...

For those of you who have recieved interviews to UCLA. How does this scandal affect your decision as to whether you are going to attend UCLA? Do you think that your future board scores if you attend UCLA will come into question by specialty programs?

It does not affect my decision whatsoever. What happened to a few students regarding misconduct is in no way indicative of the general student body. By the time I have to take the board, I'm sure this scandal will be mostly forgotten.
