sorry, but i had an incredible week and have concluded that UCLA IS THE BEST MED SCHOOL IN THE COUNTRY. do you think your school is the best too? haha, lets battle it out.

yeah,... any school that sells out for a couple hundred million to rename themselves after an entertainment mogul who did not even go to college is spectacular... only in LA...or maybe it is a california thing?...after all Conan the Barberian is the govenor.

So... Did they mention that your grades your first two years actually areused in determining AOA and mentioning class rank in your deans letter yet???

Personally, I think Cali schools in general are the best, but I am very biased. Speaking of UCLA, their Children's hospital is sponsored by Mattel toys and their Breast Care Center is sponsored by Revlon cosmetics. So if they are the best, they can certainly afford to be.

Med school is med school... it sucks everywhere. It might suck less at some schools than others, but it still sucks at UCLA (maybe not quite as much as elsewhere).

bad week??? lol.

I think $200 million is worth the rename 🙂

Okay, So You Are Saying Ucla Is Bad Because They Renamed Their School After A Guy Who Gave Them 200 Million Bucks Unrestricted.....thats The Most A Med School Has Ever Gotten At Once. Wtf Are You Saying?? Yeah, They Are Reall Bad. Bad Bad Ucla.

And You Are Not Ranked In Your Class. The Dean Is Only Told If You Pass Or Fail (and Sometimes Marginal Pass...if You Repeatedly Barely Pass). Very Rarely Does Someone Get A Letter Of Distinction For A Block. The Dean Also Gets Some Written Evaluations That Go In Your File. But Those Evals Are Not As Imp As 3rd Year Evals. Do You Know Otherwise??

I am glad you liked it. UCLA is definetely a great school-i still have second thoughts about turning them down. Make the best of it and give a shoutout to Calbee 👍

That is rankings right there. i.e. top 15% get "letter of distinctions (i.e. honors) And that does matter in class rank and AOA. (class rank being broken into quartiles ot quintiles, not 1-152, I forget which)

Hopefully you sustain this enthusiasm for four years!

UCLA's a great school, no doubt about that. All the UC medical schools are but unfortunately, that's what makes it hard to be a California pre-med; none of our state schools are "backups."

UCLA has amazing faculty members and a very laid-back student body. My interview there lasted a really really long time because we spent most of the time talking about NCAA basketball and the Lakers.

However, UCLA couldn't beat UCSF in my eyes. To each, his/her own...

Some questions to think about...

Do you want to live in LA (i.e. crime, cost of living, earthquakes)? In the neighborhood around UCLA?
What kind of patient contact do you get in the first two years?
Do you rotate through a diverse group of hospitals in your 3rd and 4th years?
Will you have a class full of gunners and freaks who come to the school because of the name?

Yea,... it is too bad you guys didn't get in to Western U COMP...it is actually the best medical school in the nation (well, maybe the big 'H' is okay too). Were in Pomona, the ROSE of So Cal (please tell me you can smell the sarcasm seeping through your monitor while reading this last comment).

Anyhow... to the OP: It is great that you love your school. I just hope you can keep it up for the next four years. I really love my school too. 😍 The bottom line is, if you feel like this after the first couple years, the chances are that you truly just love medicine and have found your calling. Consider yourself blessed to be a part of the lifetime of enjoyment and fulfillment that awaits you in medicine.

Just to clarify, Geffen gave $400 million and had the school named after him, Ronald Reagan gave $300 million and got the new hospital named after him.

So why does dean parker keep on saying Geffen gave something like $100 million in one shot and the other $100 million spread out over some set amount of years. I forgot exactly what he said, but the jist of it was like only 30 something mil was available. He said most of it was in a fund to earn interest to pay for the clinicians to teach, because when they are teaching they aren't making money for the hospital or something to that extent.

Something is wrong there. First day and you're going insane ? Hell, I know MS1s who actually started studying the 2nd week of med school. Maybe you really want great grades in every course. Anyway, good luck and enjoy it ! 👍 😀

well its hard with us to wait till second week, let alone the second day. we have pre-lab q's, pre-lecture readings, and pbl assignments that must be done right away...basically before you go to the next day. so it cant be done. well im sure someone can figure out how to do minimum work first week, but that still means a little studying. oh yeah, we also have a quiz at the end of every week, including this one...so you must study!

I sense a little waning in your enthusiasm (from your original post that began this thread) after your first day of medical school...

Kind of true. To further illustrate your point, check out this thread he made. Seems weird... No offense, docmemi, but there is something weird going on.

Again, as Blake said, no offense, but wow, what a change in just one day of class at UCLA. I thought UCLA changed their curriculum to be more relaxed with less lecture and more of an emphasis on PBL. I'm just curious but in what ways does it seem so stressful on the first day that you're telling pre-meds to rethink their goals?

Dude, I have a lot of time. Our Stethoscope Ceremony is on September 1st. Don't worry docmemi, once you find a nice rhythm it'll be much easier. I have quiet a few friends at UCLA (second years), who felt overwhelmed. But they recovered. I must admit though that a lot of them do not come to classes....

btw...Bear....UCSF isn't exactly the most relaxed place, either. My good friend will be an MS2. The stress level builds up. Don't knock on docmemi......

Harps, I never mentioned anything about UCSF's curriculum. Neither of us have gone there (we haven't started yet and I'm assuming you'll be at another medical school since we start later than Sept 1st; we're really late, which kind of sucks!) but I don't like to rely on hearsay. So I wasn't knocking on docmemi at all; I was just surprised by the sudden change and inquired as to why. I said nothing bad about UCLA; in fact, being a Californian, I seriously considered Geffen.

To be great is to be misunderstood.

I think I misunderstood your intentions. My apology.

Yes, starting late is annoying, but at least I am enjoying this boredom before school really kicks up.

okay okay everyone, calm down. lets clear things up. i love med school. i love ucla. no waning in enthusiasm. its great! i was just overwhelmed and tried to finish the entire weeks reading and assignments in one day...well it didnt work out hahah. ive relaxed a bit and im back up.

med school is still amazing and so is ucla.

the other thread i started in pre-allo was because every pre-med/dental person i know is only concerned with getting into school. never have i heard them talk about or even think about what they have to do after they get in. its a lot of freakin work...i just dont think many realize that. and all i was trying to do there was say, "hey. take a step back. you want to be a dr. make sure you understand what you have to do once you get in. then step forward and continue on." i didnt want anyone to change their goals....just appreciate what they are getting into and continue applying or whatever.

okay. so i hope yall understand. im fine. im still alive. im still doing well. love you all. hope to hear from you soon.

docmemi, glad to hear you haven't started hating medical school already!

Harps, no harm, no foul. The extra time off is nice. This summer is the most intellectually unproductive summer I've had in a really really long time. It's refreshing!

the hating usually comes a bit later, like once the novelty of memorizing ad nauseaum wears off. for me it really hit hard right around november.

if you think this summer was intellectually unproductive, try the first year of medical school. it's kind of similar, except not nearly as refreshing.

🙂

I think it's hard to separate the top 10-15 schools. A lot of times people choose among them for geographical location (my choice), not only the name.
I haven't seen any potential gunners here... It's only 1st week of class, though

The gunners will tend to sit in the front and ask a minimum of 2 questions per lecture that are not necessarily for clarification. During lectures and labs they will ask questions that they already know the answer to, to look smart. They will also try to monopolize the lecturer during the 10 minute brake between lecture not to ask a question but to discuss the latest research on such and such intervention, this is what I hate the most cause it's about the only time I ask a question. They will also talk the most during pbl, even if they don't know something they will ether pull it out of their arse or say it with such conviction that you will believe them. I had suggested to the block heads (chairs) if we could put all the big talkers in one pbl group so they could duke it out for talk time. You guys been in school one week, they start to come out of the wood work by the end of first block. Luckily there aren't that many at least in class of 2007, and normally they are still cool peeps. Oh yeah you've gotta look out for the snipers in the back of the class too, and the sleepers on the left side of the class room who snore load.

before you get too proud, you should wait til you actually start your rounds, cause that's when you see the true heart of the program. I was a UCLA undergrad and spent some time in the hospital. I was not impressed with the care or training in some parts. yeah i was a volunteer or hospital assistant but you really do only see some kinds of medicine at UCLA CHS. I felt you only got to see a certain demographic which was sad. Also, were you not aware that the med school is riddled with cycling unethical practices like selling body parts and desposing of donated bodies insensitively? UCLA is great school but probably not the best.

Make sure you get involved with the Mobile Clinic, that is where it's at 😛

Dude that was last year and those people got arrested. The actions of these 1 or 2 people tarnishes the name but has no bearing on the education that you'll recieve. As for a certain demographic yes CHS tends to get a certain type and most private hospitals do, but you can rotate at harbor or olive view (county hospitals) to get a different demographic. And yes mobile clinic is cool but don't forget there are other free clinics like salvation army and umma too, where you can get tons of clinical your first 2 years with a different demographic than chs.

haha. sounds like fun. maybe i should read up on some stuff and start asking about interventions and recent research. then ill look smart and everyone will hate me. haha. i dont think we really have anyone like that in class of 2008. everyone seems pretty chill and people ask clarification questions mostly. the other non-clarification questions are usually good anyway...like applications to our daily lives.

UCLA is the best!
