Hey, I was checking out ophtho programs on sfmatch.org and it looks like Jules Stein is a 6 year program???? What's the deal with that place? Why is it twice as long as most ophtho programs?

Only the EyeSTAR is 6 years. It also comes with a Ph.D. The regular residency program is a normal 3 years in addition to internship.

The EyeSTAR program is a year of ophtho PGY-2 after your internship year, 3 years towards a PhD, then your final 2 years of ophtho after that. They take 1-2 per year, and they interview around 8 for those positions.

Random...if you do EYEStar and already have a PhD I think you can complete it in 5 years instead of 6.

the program seems to be fairly competitive, but is likely not as competitive as a traditional spot in the ophtho residency at UCLA given the extra years.

There's only 1 spot per year, and they interview anywhere from 8 - 30 people for that spot.

there is such a program at UTMB. You don't apply separately to the program but have the option of extending your residency by two years to complete a PhD.

I'm interviewing for the EyeSTAR program this year and I was wondering if there were any other thoughts about the program from past interviewees or even current/past residents of this program.

Nothing's been said in about a year and a half so I thought I'd revive this thread.

Reviving this thread once again...

Does anyone know if the UCLA EyeSTAR program interviews occur on the same day as the regular Jules Stein residency interviews?

Does anyone know if one has to choose between EyeStar and traditional Jules Stein residency spot when applying? In other words, can one apply to only one but not the other?

Or can one apply to both and even potentially interview at both (given that there are four different interview dates to choose from)?

Thanks in advance!
