UCLA math requirement - Intro to Calculus when I got a 5 on Calc BC?

Hi, I'm taking two statistics classes (Psych stats and Engineering stats... switching majors from psych to econ and they require different stats courses) and I have 2 math "credits" from my undergraduate university. Will I still have to take a calc course? Would it hurt if I took it over the summer?

I had a 5 on AP as well. When I applied last cycle, I called and was told I had to take it still as they do not accept AP credit for math. I took Calculus I my last semester before graduation. Taking it during the summer is fine.

So you can take it your senior year? That's good news for me!

My school, another UC, won't let me take the first Calc course because I tested out of it with AP credit. They told me to take the first calc class at community college(after I finish the second quarter calc at my school). Do I really need to do that? or Can I just take 3rd quarter Calc too and be ok? 😕

Most med schools take AP credit for math and physics prereqs.

UCLA is very particular--you must take the class in college, no AP. Enroll in a CC if you get accepted, otherwise screw it (unless you like math and want to take 8 units of UD calc).

it really depends on the school. if the OP was applying to harvard for example, he would be all set with the math requirements:

4. Mathematics: one year of calculus. Advanced placement credits may satisfy this requirement (Calculus AB - 1 semester, Calculus BC - 2 semesters). A course in statistics does not meet this requirement.

You can call and ask.
If they say you need calc, then you can try to do it last quarter of senior year or summer if you get in. After you get in, you can also call and ask them if you really need to do it. They are more flexible with people they have accepted.

I was also concerned about my chances of getting in being affected by not taking calculus... But it seems like there are people who get in without it.

you got a 5 on the AP Calc BC test and are planning on taking Intro to Calc in college? are you kidding me? do you have any idea how badly you're going to rape that class? haahahaha

you don't have to specifically take Calc1 in college to fulfill your premed requirement because you can take an even higher level calc class and use that as your credit. it'll look better too, IMO.

I got a 4 on my AP Calc BC test, which gave me credit for college Calc 1 and Calc 2 automatically, and took college Calc 3 during my freshman year. College Calc is so much easier than HS calc, IMO, because they only have 1 semester to cover all the material so they have to leave out some of the more complicated stuff. my calc BC class in HS was way harder than my calc 3 class in college. I got high As on every calc3 test in college without doing much of the homework haha. 👍

One thing you can do is take Program in Computing 10A (PIC 10A). I did this and the class is not so bad.

This is your preparation for calculus-based physics. Several schools require one year of college level math. For other schools, this requirement is strongly recommended, especially as preparation for physics. One year of math can include statistics (see below) and computer programming classes

The biggest regret I have in college was receiving 24 credits for my AP classes. Should have retaken all those classes (ie. Bio 101 / Chem 101) and gotten easy A's! That would have been a nice GPA booster, instead of taking like Bio 250 as my first class in college and getting a B+...haha

u can take higher level math and be okay

Oh, BTW, I got a five on AP Calc BC, but I refused my credits because I didn't want to take higher level calc .... lol.. a smart alek move on my side 😛

indeed, you can take a higher level calculus based math that requires the credits from calc I as a prereq.
