I am scheduled to rotate through UCLA/Olive View in August. My hopes were to get a SLOR from this rotation. However, it is only 3 weeks long and split evenly between 2 hospitals. Based on a friend who rotated there, you don't often work with the same attendings many times. So how do you get a SLOR from someone without being able to work 4 or more shifts with them. She said that one of the docs writes a compilation letter with the opinions of several docs in both hospitals but is this as good as a SLOR?

Anyone with experience on this issue? Thanks!

Hey. The short answer is... yes. It is as good as a SLOR.

If you want, email Pam Dyne or Lynne McCullough when you first get there. Pam is one of the people who originated the SLOR in the first place, and is also the program director so she can probably answer any other questions you might have. Pam can be a little intimidating sometimes (without meaning to be), so if you're afeard to email her you can always email Lynne who is super nice and also the assistant PD.

If it is as good as a SLOR, I am happy with that. I have also heard that Pam Dyne is intimidating, but also great. Conflicting reports (or maybe both concurrently somehow). However, I have already emailed her with questions before, no problems.

Thanks.

One of my SLORs was basically a compillation letter. I worked with the guy who wrote it, but only like a shift and a half; but he also used input from other faculty I worked with and put it all in the letter. It didnt seem to hurt me at all in the process. That being said, sometimes if you do one or two shifts w/ a person and ask if they can write you letter, they might suggest you working one more "optional" shift (or half shift) with them so they can better evaluate you and write you a good letter. I know some people volunteered to do that extra shift w/o being asked. Just make sure you bring your "A" game if you do that extra shift.
