I have a question, in the core classes for this major, do they test on the material in the lecture only, or material that is in the reading that was never lectured on as well?

It mostly depends on the professor. I would say the majority test on lecture, but the few that didn't told us exactly what readings they would test on. Needless to say, still got a C on the final.
