hi everyone
as many of you I am applying to many dental schools for the advanced placement programs
I am also thinking in applying to the UCLA preceptorships programs just in case I do not enter at any dental school this year and as to gain experience and have more chances for next year, this would be a back up plan just in case I don t enter
Does anybody have any opinion to ehat I am thinking on doing ?
Has anybody done this preceptorships program at UCLA? is it hard or easy to get in ?
Does anybody heard anything about this

Thanks friends

it depends on why you want to do the program..and what dept. do you want to do the preceptorship in?

I would like to do it at the prosthodontics department , from 4 to 5 months and then try te get for at least 2 months in the implantology preceptorship,

all of this for two reasons , first obviously to gain experience in prosthodontics field and procedures as done in the states , I think that it would also help in order to get in a 2 years advanced placement DDS / DMD or getting into an MS as well . Depending on what I have just stated , what would you tell me ?

I did the preceptorship program for some time. I had the same reasons to go for this program as you do. I would just brief u the positive and negative aspects in my opinion:
positive points:
1. u stay in touch with dentistry in usa... which also looks good in ur CV
2. u get a chance to stay in touch with the faculty here.. helps to make contacts here in ur department.. or outside thru some volunteer work.. all that might help in getting a recommendation letter from a ucla faculty ... which would have more value than one from india.
3. u get a chance to attend the workshops etc as a passive student... but u do get a certificate.

negative points:
1. usually u dont get to work on patients.
2. quality of knowledge u gain depends a lot on the department u choose... u gotta find out facts about what u get to do in that specific dept as a preceptor. (i dont have much knowledge as to what goes on in prostho.. i guess it might be a good choice... in case if i get to know anything about it will let u know)
3. if u take ur preceptorship seriously (which is a good thing) then u get less time to prepare for ur national boards (which is a bad thing)

i did not get a call from ucla so cant say for sure how much it helped ... but i did manage to get in somewhere else, so maybe it did help. but it definitely was better than applying without any experience in usa.

hi loco
i agree with ameloblastoma. i was in the preceptorship program too and it does help to stay in touch with our field and also get used to the way they work here. but u must know that prostho or implant preceptorship is not hands on which means u would only get to observe.
but this program gives u a chance to get in touch with the faculty here and if you can manage to pull out a couple of good recommendations from here, then its all worth the time, money and effort.

and just like ameloblastoma said, i too would advise you to take this course only after you have completed your part-1, because it takes up your time.

all the best.

do we have application deadlines for preceptorship?usually when can we apply ?any help will be appreciated.

most of the courses run from quater to quarter so u can usually apply like one quarter in advance. like if you want to apply for the spring'07 rite now.
one of my friends got in at a shorter notice than that but that depends if you require a visa or not coz that usually takes longer to process.

also i would suggest that before taking a course you contact them and go and see the program co-ordinator. if you take an appt. they may also give you a short tour of the dept. that you are interested in taking the course in. but ofcourse it also depends on if you can make the trip for that.

hi guys , you bare right , it could be a good option in order to stay in touch wich dentistry and get good connection.
I have already taken part 1 and will be taking part 2 in a couple of months , so my idea is to apply to this program as a back up just in case I do not get accepted at any dental school and so as to not loose the year
thanks and good luck to everyone

thanks for the input ,I truely appreciate. To choose between externship and clinical research in india just to improve my chances for admission next year whihc course would you suggest?
I appreciate your help.
thanks

Would any of you be interested in assisting me for the WREB at USC this mid-December? You should not be a 3rd yr student at a dental school. But most of u haven't started ur programs yet. It will be great experience as u will be taking this exam to get a license in CA eventually. Please PM me soon if interested. The dates are 15th and 16th Dec.
Thanks.

it depends on which school you are planning to get into. some schools emphasize more on research aspects while some stress on the clinical skills.
we usually get quite some clinical experience with our internships in dental school in india. so i would say that having research would probably add more to your CV than externship.
