since there is no deadline for UCLA.... and no doubt UCLA will have huge number of applicants... So when do you think it is the appropriate time frame to turn in the PHF? Please share your thoughts...
Hmmm...well, let's see. I got the email on Friday. So, I'm turning in mine on Monday and I'm requesting all my transcripts on the same day as well. It shouldn't take more than 2-3 days to finish that application, considering the fact that it doesn't contain many essay questions like the one from UCSF.

IMO...3-4 weeks. They told us not to call to get updates on the status of our app to see if it is complete till 3 weeks from the date we send it.
I think they will be organizing over the next 3 weeks collecting secondaries.
But of course, you can always play it safe and have it in the mail today.

word on UCLA switching to pdf format in the future
(i'm hating this word file... probably spending more time editing it than working on the questions :diebanana:)

...is anyone else leaving any blanks for addresses and/or phone numbers for work/volunteer information (such as for service clubs, employer's contact info out of date, etc?) I'm trying to dig up past employer/volunteer information where someone might remember me - and what are the chances of UCLA actually contacting our previous employers/organizations? 😕

Whether or not your previous employers still remember you is one thing, and finding their contact information is a completely different thing. The latter is quite doable. You can find the contact information of almost any company/organization by googling them.
And I don't think any of the adcoms would actually go and contact any of them. I believe they're busy enough reviewing thousands and thousands of application. They don't need to create more work for themselves.

This was being discussed earlier but I am still having trouble with the word document. Does anyone have some simple instructions on typing this thing with out "changing the format"?

seems like we need to ask for another undergraduate transcript to be sent to UCLA..

But doesn't AADSAS already got a copy of our transcript and verified?

What's the point of this step?

And why would they want to do that? Requesting new set of transcripts (as pointless as it may seem) doesn't bring in any money for UCLA, because you're paying your undergraduate school so that they'd send out your transcripts. Even if you went to UCLA for undergrad, this still wouldn't make any money for UCLA's dental school directly. So, I highly doubt this is about the money.

He didn't say they would benefit, just that we would lose. 😉

But I really don't get it. This is a similar problem to why we can't get our DAT verified by AADSAS.

sorry i forgot to use my sarcasm font.

For the Disadvantaged part...other than, how many members were in your family can I just type No's all the way through if I don't want to be considered disadvantaged?

The "explain" part is only if you say yes right?

Yep. That's what I did.

How many hours did you guys spend on this thing? I've been putting it off for the last 4 days. I've been so lazy lately after finishing the UCSF one and working everyday aha. >.<

First time I hear someone wanting to do DDS/phD.
It would give me more career options if I do it. PhD is recognized around the world, DDS is not: opens up travel opportunities. I would be able to get an academic position easier if I want to as well. There are trade-offs... but we'll see how it goes🙂

Isn't that an additional 6 years on top of your DDS? If so, you're delaying your shot at the market (Actually running a business in the real world) by 6 years, when your counterparts can very well start saving up for opening their own private practice during this time. All this just to earn a PhD, which in the long run wouldn't do much for you unless you're really obsessed with research and it's truly a passion of yours. You can easily get an academic position with your DDS degree (as it is the case with many of the instructors at many dental schools), without the need for the PhD.
DDS is not recognized?! How did you come up with that. Saying that DDS is not a recognized degree is like saying that MD is not a recognized degree.

When they say "Don't Change the Format" they mean don't start moving around the major sections. For example, if Part-2 is on the 2nd page, don't change the font and spacing such that Part-2 ends up on the 4th page. Nevertheless, when you type in the designated fields you will change the format to some degree, because as you probably have experienced by now, every time you type something on the lines, the lines start moving around. What I did was that I typed the information, and then I used "Backspace" to delete the parts of the lines that extended too much.

I think when it comes to research-based schools like UCLA and UCSF many applicants will say that they're interested in the DDS/PhD program, just to impress the adcoms (I'm not saying this is necessarily the case for the above poster). What many students don't know is that if they mention that they want to participate in the DDS/PhD program, then there's a good chance that the adcom will ask them why they've made such a choice. And that's when many students will make a fool out of themselves during the interview, because they can't come up with a legitimate answer.

By not recognized I meant that you cannot just go to another country and start practicing. You have to take licensure exams and, sometimes, study more in school. This is true for the MD, DDS/DMD degrees as well as other professional degrees.

DDS/PhD is 7 years in UCLA (combined), however, it might take longer for the PhD part and that is one of the drawbacks.

I don't want to go into details why I want to keep the option of combined degree open. Let's just say it is good to have other options in the long run. And why are you of such an opinion of other students? Others might have thought of DDS/PhD for a long time and have good reasons for going into it.

How do you guys attach your publication? I found it's rediculous to send my 70+ pages publication. 😕

I used usps priority mail envelope to send my stuff. I think your 2ry and the publication would fit into that. It's a flat rate fee too, no matter what the weight of the envelope is ($4.85)🙂

Would you guys say its a good idea to give a paper on stuff you've been working on even though it wasnt published (professor ran out of funds and I graduated before the project hit more developed stages). I practically built the thing with another undergrad from the ground up without a grad student in the beginning. Just a thought. Thanks for your input.

Just to confirm...

It's OK to have all transcripts mailed to your home and then put them all in a big envelope along with secondaries, SEAL IT, and send to UCLA?

The transcripts that you receive from the schools must be unopened (i.e still in sealed envelopes) so you are just taking the mail from your mailbox and dumping it into a new envelope?

Maybe not a whole paper but just paragraph and put it in the research essay.

Yes, that is probably even preferred IMO. Much more organized.

remember you just need to order your transcripts with the pre req courses if u attended more than one institutions.

does UCLA send invites for secondary application to everyone with at least gpa above 2.9 and DAT above 17?

By publication.. they meant the ones in Journals (5-10pages). Not your graduate Thesis. They don't want to see your 70pg thesis.
I have a review paper (60 pages including references) and a research paper (10 pages), and I wonder if I would omit the reference list from the review paper, which could reduce it to 35 pages?

To be honest, I don't think they are going to read a 35 page science article. They don't even have time to thoroughly read our personal statements. Send something shorter.

I have kind of a dumb question.

Do we just put last name for maiden name and first name for alias?

Quick question regarding the transcript. Do we have to send transcript from every undergraduate institution you attended? Or do you just send the transcript from undergraduate institution you have completed the pre-reqs. I'm wondering because I just took 3 classes during summer at CC to finish up my general education requirement first. I did not take any of the pre-req courses from the CC by the way.

I'd have to agree. I think they want first hand research experience where you've actually conducted experiments and gotten results. Review articles are more like... well reviews.... lol. It's a collection of summarized facts from what others have done (not really your own work).

Only prereqs, they were specific in the email.

has anyone converted the doc to pdf file? if you don't mind sharing I would appreciate it if you can give me a pm. thanks

If it changes the format while doing this then it is a problem.
Zubanaya tried it and said it didn't work.

One clarification of the HS transcript. Is this really necessary? I can't imagine going back to HS to request a transcript. What if your HS is in a different state?
That is indeed a strange request.

Well! I'm pretty sure they're not requesting it just to pull a prank on you. You can probably request it via phone or mail and have them sent it directly to UCLA, if your HS is in a different state.

I think it's a good idea. I was involved in an undergrad project, which never got published. But we still wrote a 5 page paper on that project along with lots of images and stuff, and I included the whole thing with my secondary.

Hey I dont know about you guys but I am actaully typing AND hand filling out my application. Do you think that's a good idea? Or should I just struggle my way through wit the Word Editing to make it look better? What are you guys' 2 cents on this matter?

I actually typed mine. I think it's more organized that way.

I don't understand how you could do both? As in, one is typed and one is hand-filled? So two supp apps?
