like rude, dirty looks, yell at me for parking so close to their car (when i have no friggin choice). drivers are aggressive, crazy and seems like they dont want to let you change lanes (rather they speed up), its insane!!

additionally, it seems like cashiers there take their sweet ass time as if they don't give a hoots about how long the lines are building up. man, talk about how long i had to wait to pay for my parking permit because the ladies behind the window were having what seemed to be a really good conversation, same thing at the housing office. also it seems parking lots are dirty (people litter all over the place), the street signs, retaining walls have graffiti.

maybe its all bad luck. but there sure seems to be differences. well who knows, maybe its just me cause i get home sick. 😳

yeah i've been to that costco, at least i found the costco but it took me days sitting in the hot afternoon sun (in traffic of course) just to get there (of course im exaggerating.)

welcome to LA, bub; starkly different from Davis, eh? 😳

Welcome to LA  ~~ being in this big city and the little cow town each for 4 years myself
I understand what you mean by the differences.

But it just takes a little bit time to get used to it

Then I'll detest you for as long as I live. =) Soon enough, you will be assimilated into our...er...their culture. (I swear, I'm still from NorCal! =P)

I'm with Lady V on this one... Doing my undergrad in Chico I became very used to casually saying hello to people on the streets, opening doors for one another, and heaven forbid, slowing up 3 mph to let a car merge in.

And ziptree... No way am I going to conform to the fast LA culture... I'm going to bring my NorCal/Oregon friendly attitude down to SoCal and I am going to change LA. WHOS WITH ME!?!?!?!

all i can say is people definitely do change here.

Hey you guys,

I still have yet to receive my unit assignment and roommate information for Weyburn yet, hopefully you guys can help me answer this question. I've been assigned to a 2 bedroom apt. I noticed that, after looking at the floor plan, there's one bathroom outside and one inside of a bedroom. Do you guys know how the room assignment works? Or does it depend on whoever moves in first?

THANKS

Tofu,

The housing assignment is first housemate, first choice! Apparently, I got seconds but its totally fine with me since I got the seperate bathroom which is bigger, plus deeper closet which of course is important to me. 😉

Hey~ kev

I haven't got my info yet either. I just called the housing assigment office this morning and they told me they will email that to me by the end of this week(tomorrow??). Housing Assignement: 310-825-4271, give them a call if you worry.

Yes, you get to choose your room if you get there first. I don't think it really matters that much. if you get the seperate bathroom you can simply hang a curtain to seperate the living room from your bedroom + bathroom.

btw, this is Jeff 😎

McShow, you are a nice guy but you sometimes ask me weird questions (e.g. meaning of life and the above). I enjoy helping others. As you and others know I've helped many SDNers in various ways ever since I joined the SDN community. I am still helping many students via email messages, the forums (esp. the DAT DISCUSSIONS forum), etc etc. I've taught a few classes too. I usually go way beyond my paid hours to help my students. I've also worked for quite a few non-profit organizations. So, I am all about helping others in any way possible.
Would you be saying the same after a year at UCLA?

i researched all the preferred online lenders and chela has the best discounts and repayment plans, i think.

Does everyone get the $500/quarter dentistry grant?
it's free money, right?

There's no doubt in my mind that you will 😉

and there is no doubt in my mind that you'll do great in dental school.

Ok all, I am a big time noob to the financial aid deal... I see where we got our varous loans/grants... but what is this talk about lenders?

Is that for private loans only, or what...?

Also, I see we get a certain ammount a quarter, how are we going to be able to drop 12 grand right when we get there on the dental kit. I'm seriously freakin out right now... I knew i was going to be in debt, but seeing it is nuts!!!

:scared:

...

"With campus-based loans, such as a Federal Perkins Loan or a Regents Loan, there is no need to select a lender as the university is the lender." For all others, you need to select a lender...

EDIT:

"...After the lender obtains the loan guarantee, a contract, called a Master Promissory Note (MPN), will be provided to you. For faster processing of a lender-based federal loan such as a Stafford Loan, students can electronically sign the MPN on the Sallie Mae website..."

"...You must apply for Bruin Direct and should do so through the Main Cashier, 1125 Murphy Hall or by obtaining an application from www.sfs.finance.ucla.edu..."

I thought we could pay in several payments

P.S. I just completed my online Debt Management Session/Entrance Exam 🙂

I didn't have to take that exam for some reason.

On eFAN, do you guys know how they come up with these portions of the budget summary?
Cost of Attendance $59,274 (Should be the same for everyone)
Parent Contribution 0
Student Contribution $8,102
Financial Aid Eligibility $51,172

In order to fully meet the cost of attendance, are we able to manipulate any of the 3 factors? For example: increase parental contribution from 0, decrease my own contribution, and increase financial aid eligibility, etc.

I am 99.99% sure you have to. To determine if you are required to complete a Debt Management Session/Entrance Exam you should go to this web site: http://www.loans.ucla.edu/DMS/Qualify.aspx AND answer all of the questions. Answer to #4 is NO (Q: Are you presently a UCLA graduate student enrolled in any of the following)

_____________
P.S.

Go to http://www.edfund.org/schools/services/resources/eec/schools.cfm?edfpage=eec.cfm

Obtain student access by selecting 'California' from the dropdown menu and clicking on 'Get Schools'.

Use the dropdown menus to select 'UCLA LOS ANGELES' as your school and 'undergraduate or graduate' depending upon your enrollment level. Click 'Continue'.

Click on the 'Entrance Exam' icon.

I think you should contact Mr. Frank Ducette in the financial aid office. If you need his phone number send me a PM.

I don't think we need to do it, on the financial aid page for uclasod under Mandatory Entrance Interview it says...

"All students borrowing federal funds are required to participate in an Entrance Interview. The School of Dentistry Financial Aid Office will conduct an Entrance Interview during First Year Orientation, this will also count as your mandatory Debt Management Session. Failure to complete an Entrance Interview may result in suspension of federal aid."

So I think thats the debt sessions for us.

Thanks, I just emailed Frank. Hopefully he'll be able to get back to me soon.

BTW, are any of you going to be attending New Graduate Student Orientation? I figure the 1 week of orientation from the dental school is already sickening enough, I will much rather spend the Friday before instruction begins to mess around.

$500/quarter in respect to the $59,274/year cost of attendance shouldnt be that big of a concern for you. You can make up the difference by brewing your own coffee and download movies from BT websites instead of going to the theatre. 🙄
Let's worry about where we gonna get the $58,000+ a year.. :scared:

I swear the financial aid office pulls the "Student Contribution" thing outta their ass just to make up the difference for "Financial Eligibility" and "Cost of Attendance" 😡

How much room in that 59 thousand are we going to have to go to an occasional movie, eat out every so often, to buy a birthday present for your girlfriend, etc.?

Do you think the 59 is bare necessities, or a little fudge room?

Also, My uncle graduated dental school in 94 or 96 from UCSF, and the entire cost of his attendance was barely over 60 grand (he lived in a dental frat..) But still. SO DAMN EXPENSIVE!!!

One more question, do we need to do ANYTHING with financial aid crap before orientation begins on the 14?

Lastly, I think I'm going to attend the new student orientation, just because I'm scared not to.

Also one more thing, should we choose to specialize, will we need to start making payments on our debt... or do most lenders (for stafford) allow you to defer payment until you're out of residency?

Shoot, I'm just on a roll with three posts in a row...

But I just wanted to let anyone know who has not done their cpr certification yet, to do www.cprtoday.com. The program is 40 bucks, and probably takes 20 minutes no joke. You get to print your CPR card and certificate when you're done.

I highly reccomend.
