I am already starting to hate my future second home - the ucla biomed library.

I have been spending all of my time there lately getting all the articles and writing my masters thesis. The low ceilings of the journal/book stacks area makes it a very claustrophobic place.

But on a more positive note, the amount of journals there is INSANE!!!! They got the most obscure or dated journal you will ever need.

As dental students you get care for really cheap. A crown or cast restoration is about $200. And if anyone wants some gold inlays/onlays just let me know!

oOo...cheap is good too. I guess nothing is for free. 😉

I just received an interview invite from UCLA. How many people do you guys think get accepted after interviewing?

many!

they keep telling you at the interview that they only invite competitive applicants that on paper will fit well at UCLA. So the interview is to make sure you are a good person in person.

don't worry too much, read up on SDN interview feedback. but the question are very easy, why dent? why ucla? tell me about yourslef....

good luck! hope to see you there in the fall

Apparently UCLA is in no rush, they are one of the last to fill their class. Some poster posted earlier on this thread that most of he classmates heard really late! So keep fingers crossed, but i think your chances are swell! 🙂

I agree. UCLA started interviewing applicants later than any school in the country. I also agree that UCLA doesn't seem to reject too many applicants (especially California residents) post-interview because they only invite competitive applicants. EyeAmCommi you have a very good chance to get accepted. UCLA is a great school and by far has the highest specialization rate in California. I wish you the best of luck. Again, you are an excellent candidate and you have a very good chance to get in.

be really excited and confident and you'll get in. you don't want to be thinking about anything else, e.g. "is this just an alternate list interview" or anything of that nature. just tell them you want to go to ucla and they'll love you (as they did me  )

Wow thanks for the responses! I love you guys! I'm very excited to be going this weekend. I can use a break from cold/rainy weather of Norcal.

I just called Noemi and she said that I'm interviewing for a regular spot at UCLA. I hope I don't get there and find out that I'm actually interviewing for a lame alternate spot! If that was the case, I probably wouldn't go to the interview. If they don't want me in the first place, why should I want them! Wahaha!

dat student, I'm so glad that you're back. You've always been so helpful and positive. 🙂

think positive and you'll do great. Like KAP said, don't think you're flying down here for an alternative spot. Be happy, smile, and tell them you love them, and they'll give love back to you in return. You should be very excited! 😀

Just wondering... Does anyone know anything about the laptop situation. Do we need to buy one even if we already own one that is up to par?

Do you think it would be better to have a seperate dental one and a personal one?

For our class they gave us a list of specifications that our laptop needs to have (we could get any laptop as long as these were met)...they also had two options to choose from on a Dell website with a bit of a discount. They never checked to see if we did get laptops and if we did that they met the required specifications...you could probably show up and go to school here for a while before buying one and they'd never know it.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

Yeah, I don't think you'd use your laptop in clinic until 3rd year. Maybe you would in 2nd year if you wanted to start seeing patients on your own (without your 3rd or 4th year). I bet almost any PC laptop made in the last 5 years would work fine. You guys are stoked. For my class, we all had to buy $2400 Gateways that have a horrible track record. Probably 95% of people's computers have broken. Don't get Gateway. If I was shopping for one right now I'd get something really small and light. It's nice not to carry a heavy backpack around all day. I'd get one of those tiny 12" laptops.

Ditto. I recommend getting a small light one. Mine is a huge 15 inch screen, and there's no point for it.

\

But would you guys reccomend a seperate one from your personal cpu at home?

I wouldn't recommend a second one for at home...you'd probably be constantly downloading and transferring files between the two. I would recommend getting some sort of laptop before school starts...if you don't have one already buy a small one that fits the school's requirements, and if you do, just use that one (perhaps just get a wireless card if your laptop doens't get wireless) and then get a new one before you start seeing patients in clinic (buying one as late as possible is preferrable so you can get the best technology at the best price). It's kind of nice to have it during lectures because some profs give us power point slides in advance and then you can just follow along with the lecture on your laptop and take notes on the slides (especially good for classes where you don't get handouts...I'd say right now 50% of our profs give us handouts and slides, 25% give us handouts and no slides, and 25% give us slides no handouts, so I find it best to haul my laptop and a notebook to school to accomadate the different teaching styles). I have a 12.1' widescreen Dell Inspiron 700m and am in love with it...it is probably the most popular laptop among the people in my class. Very portable, good performance, no complaints.

oh my gosh - I just got the call from Noemi - I'm going to UCLA!!! I hope to meet some of you guys this fall. I'm so so excited! 😀

Okay. I had no idea UCLA was in such a nice area. It was quite a surprise when I got lost around the area getting to the interview.

I agree. It's in a beautiful & safe area.

Sorry, I'm new here so I don't know how to post yet so I kind of use this to post a question (Sorry). I'm currently applying to UCLA and USC school of dentistry. However, I completed my application really late (in mid december and one of my professors mailed in the letter of reference to AADSAS by the end of January). Yeah, I know this is really bad; thus, I was wondering if I still have a chance at anything because so far I haven't heard anything yet from these two schools. Please answer me, thanks.

Congrats! UCLA is a great school. Apparently, UCLA recently ranked #2:

"I am ending this message on a very high note. The July 2004 Performance Summary of the Part I, National Board Dental Examinations, ranks our School as number 2 in the nation. The difference between our average score and that of the first ranked school is an infinitesimal 0.8 while the difference between our average score and the third ranked school is now greater by 2.8. This is wonderful news and I am proud of our students who did so well."
