I know there have been a lot of posts about this in the past but some of the info in them seem outdated (ex. UCSF brough in a new dean and UCLA updated its curriculum (which I feel is like UCSF's)) so here it goes... again...

I'm trying to decide between the two schools and it's driving me crazy... I'm in LA (not UCLA though) right now for undergrad so if I stay there won't be too much adjusting to do... but I feel like if I stay here for dschool as well, i might never get a chance to go live in another city.. also, i don't care much for sports(football/bball team, etc.) and undergrad being on campus which seem like a big reasons for UCLA i see in other threads..

i'm leaning towards UCSF right now because of living in a new city and since their curriculum has been in place for the last few years. whereas at UCLA, we'll be the second class to go through the new curriculum.. also, UCSF seems to offer more free time with 2 ISOs& first summer off..

but i just want some honest opinions about the two schools. especially if you've been in my shoes and have made a decision. i am also open to PM if you want to discuss anything with me.

Thanks for taking your time to read & reply.

I interviewed at UCSF and absolutely loved the school, but haven't been invited to interview at UCLA, although I am sure I would enjoy it equally. From your post it seems as if you're leaning towards UCSF, which seems logical given your reasons. Both are Pass/Fail, roughly the same price, and similar class sizes.

If I were in your situation, I would be asking myself if I would miss LA if I were to move away for 4 years, and whether or not the lifestyle in SF suits me. Some people would argue that attending UCLA would be the wiser choice if you plan to practice in LA in the future, but like you said, you don't want to be stuck there the rest of your life.

I don't think there's really much anyone could say that could drastically change your mindset at this point, given that both schools are so good and similar. In this case, I REALLY think it just comes down to where you think you'll be happiest.

Either way, it's a win-win. Good luck! 👍

UCLA and UCSF both located in great area. I love UCLA, because the environment is great, because I studied there before. I do not know the living conditions about UCSF, but it seems like UCSF offers more for dental students. They have around 8 or 9 specialties to provide the opportunity. Congrats on both great school acceptance!!!!! I believe that you will do great at UCLA or UCSF! ^^

Do you like the sun and great asian food/girls or windy cold weather with slight rain?

Come to UCSF if you like rocker and emo chics. They're all over the place!

Same thing I've been say'n for years:

Which do you want, Smog or Fog?? The only significant, long term difference between the two.

thank you for all the info and advice.
p.s. thanks for all the chicks info. however, i'm a girl myself interested in males. if anyone has anything to say about the guys at each schools, that'd be great
as i've stated before, i am leaning towards ucsf but the move won't be as smooth as i had intended because i'll be breaking my year long contract for the place i'm at and all that ****.. but hopefully it'll be worth it in the end...
if anyone else has anything to add or tell me, please feel free to do so. 🙂

just like the others would say, both great schools, LA has better weather. Also, you are more familiar with the LA area, so I would chose LA if i was you. You dont want to go to a city and then find out that you don't like it that much, but have to live there for 4 years.

i like how you dont need a car to get anywhere in sf. buses come every 3 minutes. i would go to sf for the new experiences. westwood living is very expensive and i absolutely HATE the 405 fwy

u need a car regardless. if u want to go up north or south. lots of good food outside sf

you need a car in sf? i was thinking if i go to la, i'd probably need to buy a car and if i go to sf, i won't... i remember at the interview, all the faculty were telling us not to bring our cars cause it's not worth the trouble...

You do not need a car to fully enjoy S.F! Next to N.Y., it's the second most useless city to own a car. Parking is a nightmare on crack with an LSD flashback thrown in!

Both schools are awesome, as most would agree. If you live in LA and want to keep your friends/apartment, go to UCLA. If you want a change and experience a completely different city, then think about UCSF. Either way, there are hundreds here who would kill to have to make your decision!

Congrats...cuz you can't make a bad decision.

Dizz.....out!

Guys in dental school generally are kinda geeky, and it's great. I'm assuming that's true for both schools. There are usually one or two pretty boys in the class, but they're still semi geeky. Oddly enough, the Mormon boys in the class aren't so geeky. To think of it, it's usually the Mormon boys who're cursing in the background in operative. How ironic.

I just spiked an $85 parking ticket because my neighbor felt the 3 inches my bumper protruded into his driveway was enough of a reason to call the parking police to tow me 👍

wow... that's cruel... i think that's what mr. bebetze told us at my interview... ppl usually bring their car, run up $700 the first semester on parking tickets, and sell it over winter break...

i've lived in sf my whole life... born and raised. Funny thing is that i'm like the opposite of you. I got into UCSF but i think i would probably give it all up if i could get into UCLA. it's just that i have lived 6 blocks away from ucsf for most of my life ~18 years total. All the reasons for LA are weather, sports team, and a whole different city and lifestyle. I just want to get out of my comfort zone and bubble. I think both schools are very comparable as for as academics and recognition. I wouldn't worry too much about living in the area of your school bc i'm sure you will meet plenty of ppl that will work back in LA, especially since its the UC system. (same goes for me...i'll probably want to come back to bay area for work). Now what can i say about sf..... weather has been really nice this year (i think global warming is to blame but lots of sunny days - maybe not by your standards though). I'd suggest investing in a peacoat though..hahaha. Besides fog can look really cool, esp when you're viewing above the fogline in one of skyscrapers or looking at it come in over the bay bridge or off the CA mountains (the 280 freeway has scenic views near Mountain View). You'll be fine without a car. MUNI works really well (just on the smelly and dirty side)... and get cabs if you party. Its a lot cheaper than cabs in LA going from city to another city. Just make friends with car drivers in dschool. Anyways, best of luck to whichever school/location you choose. I'm sure you'll do great either way!! 🙂
