Yes...I am an lmu alumnus.

i'm a fellow bruin, class of 2002, soon to be UNECOM class of 2008. i never even thought about osteopathy as an undergrad at ucla (truthfully, i didn't know anything about it) was it the same for you other bruins?

Hey all,
Any other Bruins going to PCOM in the fall?
Peace! 😀

yeah i had no clue what DO was; i first heard about it at an "alternatives to medicine" panel at the alumni center.

they had a DO, a PA, maybe an optometrist? but anyways; the DO made it seem like osteopathic medicine was an alternative to medicine; he said he didn't get into medical school so he went to DO school. Also he said he likes to work with his hands and osteopathic medicine is pretty physical. I came out thinking DOs were sort of like chiropracters.

I learned what DOs really were when i was at georgetown. there's a prof of anatomy out there who is a DO and he really taught us what they were and how they were equals to MD.

In the end i liked the holistic philosophy and the ability to offer patients alternative treatments in addition to pharmaceuticals.

not that MDs can't offer that option to their patients, i just think as a DO, i'll learn some more about other ways to treat patients

how did you guys find out about DO?

i think i maybe got one pamphlet from a DO school mailed to me after i took the mcat, and i'm almost certain i threw it away without even a second glance. that was probably the only time osteopathy had ever crossed my mind. after i graduated and was in the working world, a coworker of mine (who was currently applying to MD programs for the second time around) mentioned osteopathy to me as an option for staying in california. (i didn't have the grades to get into pretty much any CA schools. so i started researching it on my own, and lo and behold, it just was a perfect fit for me. i felt like the principles of osteopathy were part of the basic ideology i wanted to have in my practice of medicine, so why not go through a program that embraces them? the irony is that not only am i turning down CA DO schools, but i'm moving pretty much as far away as i can possibly go from california for med school! i guess life just works out that way sometimes ...
