Has anybody received any information on when school starts or whats going on or any info on whether they received financial aid packets? I havent gotten anything from them and would like to hear if anybody knows what the deal is. has anybody started looking into housing are there waiting lists or is it pretty easy to get something.

From my understanding through previous posts, financial aid letters don't go out until July some time. I haven't called to find out yet though. As for housing, you'll probably find better information in the Dental Forum, as most of them have gone through the process of looking for a home at least once. Good luck!

Hey Jim! Hope you're faring well in MI.

I don't know anything besides what's mentioned here.
I was just wondering: what are our obligations with respect to immunizations?

I'm thinking that the only places to live are either Farmington, W Hartford, or Avon. Honestly, there's a ton of options for the 10 mile radius of the campus (in Hartford Co.) and I suggest getting a head start at prudentialct.com (while keeping the issue of traffic in mind). If I'm not mistaken, the commute from W Hartford and Avon to Farmington ain't so bad, but try to stay away from the others (ie coming in from south of Farmington is bad, coming in from north of Farmington is not so bad, etc etc). Also, there's another UConn 2009 thread, you could search it under "UConn 2009" and check it out.

I'm from California! Los Angeles Co.; Sherman Oaks/Encino/Tarzana area, if it doesn't ring a bell maybe you could check it out in the future, it's not so bad of a place, the girls are unbelievable. Silly me for being in a relationship for the past 3 years! What about yourself?

schwarzenegger.jpg

I'm going to UConn for 3 reasons:
1) I love the weather
2) I heard the classes are easy
3) 50 cents might be my patient, he told me so telepathically

Seriously though, others can't compete with the small class size, tuition, and the advantage of working in a more affluent environment! 👍

Any word on the vaccinations and misc stuff?

i already got invited to the g-unit mansion. got a contract for platinum caps for lloyd banks in 2010. tough luck. i got you beat, i am in a 5 year relationship, living in nyc just as hard as ca believe that. my lady is from that area i think she knows the neighboring towns but good look on the traffic thing thats why i didnt go to umdnj, didnt want to sit in traffic after a day of classes or heading toward an exam. i hear the forest complex is alright and real close so i might check that out.

is anyone interested in establishing a note-taking co-op and to post it as an organization on blackboard.com?

the title would be something like:
class of 2009 note taking co-op

if you check out "organizations" section of our blackboard account you'll notice that the class of 2005 had established a note-taking co-op and that the class of 2008 has something similar to that

i dunno, y'all lemme know

Ray, this sounds like a great idea. I'm willing to help if you want. Do you already have a Blackboard account? How did you get it?

J, wazzzup!

the setup's kinda confusing but go to the blackboard link from this URL and enter:

username- first initial, last name [e.g. JDoe (new username column on e-mail accounts sheet)]
password- DS2009

*be sure to change your password once you're in there

i'm thinking that we can get this sorted out during orientation and the account started by the first day of lecture!
or we can not do it on blackboard and create a website!
please advise
enjoy the summer! 😀

where are the uchc people thinking of living?

i'm tempted to fly out and check out the locations in person

We certainly could do it on a website, I can contribute my mad design skills to the cause if that be the case.

I'm driving out to Connecticut early next month to go hunting for a place. I've seen lots of good deals on craigslist.org, you might want to check there.

that's just the thing we need to separate ourselves from any previous classes on campus-- our own website!
(a proper ash website! )
Jim, with your skills it can be undoubtedly a top quality site!
what format do you think would be good-- is it possible to establish username/password accounts?
possibly make it into a forum or bulletin board that can be frequently updated?

i dunno
but i wanna help as much as possible
please advise!

Yeah, I can set all that stuff up. we should get together in August and discuss all the features we want so we can have everything ready by the 18th.

dude, your site is so ill!
i c you've already got the username/password thing down! wow!
this is gonna be awesome! 👍 😀
no matter what i'll be there come august, sounds like there'll be plenty of time

what is this websight that was created. the blackboard co-op note sharing thinig is a great idea, ill totally be down for helping out with any of that. i just got a package in the mail that said something about a reading list that will be posted on teh blackboard site, any idea what it might be? i just cam from that area this past weekend and put a bid in for a 2 bedroom duplex apt at the forest park complex. you guys should look into it, it looks like a good option compared to the other complexes and it's close to the health center. we'll all see each other aug 18th should be interesting.

Joe, good to c u again!

i just checked the school's e-mail acct and wow! there's a bunch of reading!
it made for an interesting half hour 👍
I was talking about Jim's site above; he's amazing with HTML!
i think we can have a DS2009 site that would destroy blackboard

any word on fin aid? when we get checks etc etc?
i dunno how to fund my move from coast to coast
it's gonna be pretty costly considering first n last month rent, furniture, etc etc
any advice is greatly appreciated

august is right around the bend...
enjoy the summer! :luck:

Yes, I am getting quite anxious about that information as well. Moving expenses, first month rent + security deposit, etc can get pretty pricey. Maybe a call to the financial aid office would be informative.

For the note-taking coop, we should start thinking about a name for the organization, as well as a domain name for the website. Are there any other services/features that the organization should encompass?

normally the checks dont come in till 2 weeks before the classes start making stuednts to have to pay for a lot of stuff (like stuff you mentioned) up front. my advice is that you get a place that is furnished (or at least partially furnished) and then find a better place either during the January or summer break. It is always easier to buy furniture when you know more about the town. and i do not suggest moving furniture 1500 miles across the coutry. Farmington CT is in the middle of the woods, so you guys shoul be able to find decent places for about $400-$500/month for maybe a 1 bd room and if the landlord is being harsh, try to negotiate.... explain the situation, offer what you can afford, and give them a check that they can cash when the money is in... in 2-3 weeks. (my landlord for grad school was a greedy racist woman who demanded 6 months of rent in advance (in addition to the required fees) when she found out i am from Iran. i still gave her all that b/c i wanted her place really badly!!! the good thing about it was that i did not had to see her face for the next 7 months!!)

you and me both!
i just called citibank to ask if they'd front me $5k and they said nooo way!
two weeks before school is just not soon enough
and it's a challenge in itself to get a hold of the fin aid people! 😉
i'll post what i hear from them, as soon as i hear it 😀

Jim, i think a name something like Dnotes [Dn (e.g. D1, D2, etc) + notes = Dnotes] or noteshare
as long as it's simple and can be marketed 🙂
i can't think of anything good to add to the site at this time,
i'll be sure to post what comes to mind :luck:

Hey guys, name's Matt and I'll be starting in August too. Have any of your tried calling the financial office? I left a message a few days ago with no response so far. Even if we cannot get the actual aid until a few weeks before school, it would be nice to know how much we qualify for. It is tough to find housing when we do not know our budget... Anyway as for more important things, I am driving back to New England from Utah (there this winter for a ski sojourn) starting tommorow. Since today was my last ski day of the year, it got me wondering if anybody was down for some ski trips up to the white (or green) mountains next winter?

Hey Matt,

I'm headed out to Connecticut this morning also to find a place. Maybe I'll see you there? Have a safe trip!

hey Matt, good to see you again!
man i need to hit some beginner slopes before i can hang with you on your offer man
but i do look forward to learning how to ski!

Matt & Jim, good luck on your voyage and enjoy new england! :luck:

Joe, there's nothing up on blackboard yet
it's our job to check that and our uchc email account until 8/18
have you checked out your email account yet?
i'll post anything i notice as it happens! 😀

i just got off the phone with the "forest" manager:
i'm the second person on the waitlist for a one bedroom
and the first on the waitlist for a two bedroom
i want to live in the forest for first year;
if there's anyone interested in rooming, please gimme a holler (24 swm)

i totally hear you about fin aid
ms brackburn is out of office, eh? and ms crespi doesn't answer her phone 🙄
i'll keep tryin and post anything new
i'm thinking of hollering at ms shaw,
she seems the most receptive to help out

look forward to meeting y'all!
enjoy the summer! :luck:

Yes, this is the information I've derived from my D-3 friend also.

After two packed days of driving around and visiting apartments, the hunt has come to end. I've got a nice place in West Hartford lined up for August 1st. Ray, I saw your name on the list at the Forest Park apartments in Farmington. Is that where you think you'll end up? I've become much more aquainted with the area now and saw many apartments, so if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Hopefully my day will come soon enough
please share your voyage, i'd love to hear about your experience 🙂

Did you get a chance to check out Forest Park
is their first/last month free promotion the real deal?
any suggestions?

Thanks!
enjoy your trip! :luck:

Probably easiest to wait and setup a note taking service with the med students so you don't have to do it too often. That worked out well for everyone involved.

Well, as much as i like to be sorrounded by friends and go to a school that is the top, cheap, and only 2 hrs away from home, i know that i can't handle the curriculum or living in Farmington. I'd just go insane the first week i get there!

Specific advise is difficult to give since so many things have changed since I was in 1st year. This is going to sound glum because getting through UConn is as much about avoiding the land-mines as it is about working hard. So work hard and here are some of the land-mines.

1. Keep your eye on the ball but give your self some relaxation time. First and second year require a tremendous amount of focus but also require balance with other parts of your life.

2. Try to get to know your classmates - including the medical students. Everyone is in the same boat first and second year and any snottiness on the part of the medical students is quickly gone when they realize your schedule is more difficult than theirs and you're doing better on exams.

UConn is not a place to be competitive with your classmates. You will quickly learn that you must earn (by clawing) your way through every little thing at UConn - depend on your classmates for help and support. I here that classes have become more competitive in the last few years and it's a shame. No one is "taking your spot" in a residency program by getting better grades. Almost everyone, every year, gets to do what they want to after dental school with little problem.

3. Do the best you can, but there is no reason to sabotage anyone else. You will throughout the years come to depend more and more on your classmates - especially during clinical years. Get to know them now and be good to them.

4. Lastly, I've seen many instances were people fail to realize this point. UConn's aim is to turn out very well rounded dentists and they place almost as much emphasis on how you carry yourself, your professionalism, would they be happy to call you a colleague, etc as they do academics. If you're having difficultly, don't blame others, don't get made, don't give excuses. Even if it's not your fault, accept responsibility and be positive - let them know you don;t want to blame you want to learn from this mistake. Ask for help and remember, especially with the dental school faculty and administration, you're always "on stage". Think before you speak. It is a very small school and every single faculty member there will know you by name and remember what you say.

5. People who have problems with promotion 1st and 2nd year have them due to academics. If you're having problems talk to the course directors and dental school administration. Let them know you care. Sometimes people's opinion of how hard you're working is more important than your grades.

People who have problems with promotion in 3rd and 4th year have them due to personality conflicts/professionalism. Manage your patients well. Think before you speak to an attending. Look over notes before you do something for the first time. I can't tell you how many people would show up to clinic to do their first cast-post-core and have no idea other than what they vaguely remember from class. Faculty will remember these times.

6. It is a "very rigorous curriculum" 😉 but I'm very glad I went to UConn. It wasn't always the happiest of times, but overall, while very stressful, it wasn't the worst of times either. Your in "the major leagues" now [that's said with a very thick Boston accent - will make more sense in a few months], time to step up to the plate and deliver.

brother or sister...
you rock!!

that advice is very motivating and very welcomed!
i have a couple of specific tidbit questions if you don't mind answering them (= they're pretty silly questions =)

1) what is appropriate attire at uchc?

2) i tend to pick up a cigarette habit during stressful times; would my smoking make me an outcast?

3) would you advise against a guy wearing earings, or is the campus ok with that?

thanks
good luck everyone and enjoy the summer! :luck:

1. 1st and 2nd year - wear what ever you want as long as your not in clinic. Nice shorts and a collared button-up shirt was always comfortable when it was hot and jeans and a shirt in winter. 3rd and 4th year scrubs or slacks and a collared shirt.

2. We has maybe 1 person who consistently smoked through school although never in front of anyone and never at school. 95% were non-smokers or smoked at parties only. Some assistants smoke and to be honest I find the way they smell entirely unprofessional.

3. Depends on how tasteful it does or doesn't look. No problems 1st and 2nd year but maybe 3rd and 4th.

thanks for all your insight! it's much appreciated! 😀

UConn_SDM, what differences have you noticed between the older and newer generation of students? also, what do you usually do on weekends besides studying?

Thanks!

Unofficially, all I know is the last few incoming classes have been more competitive with each other than previous years. It's not at all a big problem - simply more prevalent than in my class which was extremely noncompetitive with each other. Also, there are some changes with the medical school curriculum - they're giving the student much less in terms of syllabi, handouts, access to PowerPoints. This maybe why the classes seem more competitive as they are scrambling more for materials (just a guess??).

What did I do on the weekends besides study 1st and 2nd year? - STUDY!!!
The curriculum is tough!

lol

i'm sure that the curriculum can only get better as each year passes; instructors must "touch up" the kinks that existed in previous classes to streamline the best information in the alloted time to the new students. this is my experience from previous instructors; lots of feedback from students to instructors to add relevent info and remove extraneous info

the powerpoint automatically makes me feel more at ease; do you find that instructors provide most of the info in the lectures, or do we actually have to read and practice questions from the text? (something i haven't done in a long time! 😳 ) i would certainly guess that students supplement their lectures with class notes, however i wonder what makes the uchc curriculum so intense. what do you recommend?

o you find that instructors provide most of the info in the lectures, or do we actually have to read and practice questions from the text?

Ha ha ha - that was funny...you're killing me. It's more like lecture on one topic, assign reading for another topic, and test on a third and vaguely similar topic. You have to read all the time to get the information. You can't survive on what was presented in class - they don't have 1/5 the time to cover in class what you are responsible for knowing. Things move so fast. Remember enzyme kinetics from undergrad - every single thing we covered in 2 months in undergrad covered in 2 hours. And in some ways you're expected to know it more than in undergrad because everything is integrated with the physiology.

They're masters at testing. My favorite thing they used to do is ask which of the following 5 is the BEST answer and give two correct answers. Or ask which of the following is not something and the last answer is all of the above are. Or which of the following would you do first and give you five things you would do in 10 seconds and whose order doesn't really matter.

I swear you could fail a test knowing every answer because you couldn't figure out what they were asking??

😱
this topic is tabled until further notice!

Many thanks for your very insightful posts and good luck with your future studies and career! :luck:

Just one more thing - you will get used to all of this. When I think back it was my self-inflicted stress that was the most painful part. Had I just chilled, it would have been more enjoyable. That's why I say the key is to work very hard but keep a eye on the big picture.

I said in one of my posts I didn't go out on the weekends, I studied. I should have gone out more on the weekends and enjoyed myself more - my grades would have probably been better getting some R&R.

Good luck to you. I'll be floating around if need be from time to time.

QUOTE]

while i an unaware of the Uconn's policy on this, i want to remind you of how conservative some people on this part of the country can be. You cant find too many guys wearing earings here. Few years ago few some black and hispanic men were wearing earings and for OTHER reasons (misbehaving, unemployment, etc...) they were looked down upon. So no one wanted to do anything that resembeled them. Today very very few men in the area wear earings and the occasional guy has a very small one in his left ear.

when in rome do as the romans 😉
we'll see how it goes
thanks for the advice 😀

Would any second, third, fourth, or other year dental/medical student care to comment (in some detail 😛 ) how they approached studying for the tests of the BMS curriculum? Are there any trends in the questions asked? Here it is mentioned that these are the sorts of questions:

Are these similar questions to the NBDE 1 and therefore it would behoove us to become familiar board exam questions? Any input is greatly appreciated 🙂

I don't remember the there being too many questions on the national boards like these but the NERB licensing written exam had a lot of give the "best" answer with a whole bunch of possible answers given.

This format was used more in the medical school curriculum. You'll get used to it. I think they always try and get you to have to decide between two answers - and that isn't bad because you have a 50/50 shot at being correct after eliminating the obviously incorrect answers.

I also think the fact that it is pass/fail means they really try and make you earn the pass. I don't remember very many simple multiple choice questions - they want you to think and they know where people get confused and will put the commonly confused answer on the exam.

As far as studying, read the assigned reading but not word for word. Remember this is not a novel you are reading for pleasure. Learn to look at a paragraph and get the important facts out of it quickly. Pictures are your friend. Once you've covered the reading and your notes, a lot of it is about ORGANIZATION! Use review books after reviewing as they tend to with putting the big picture together - although I believe they are often not specific enough and it's hard to learn anything other than the big picture from them.

Large groups of things need to be organized into an easily studied format. I would summarize every lecture including notes and reading material on a single page. Going into an exam I would have 120 pages (yes, some sections have 120 lectures per exam) and study those.

Work with classmates. If you get four people in a room working hard one of those people is almost certain to understand a concept you don't/ Let them teach the group. In 5 mins they can teach you what would've taken you 20 or 30 mins to learn.
