I should be graduating from Boston College with around a 3.3-3.5 overall gpa and around a 3.3-3.5 science gpa, probably both around 3.4.....I am expecting min 19, with luck 20 ave on the dat......i was wondering as to what you all saw my chances at UConn to be...I AM FROM CT....i believe that helps a lot.......also, how would i fare at BU, NYU, Temple, and Tufts?

You will be just fine. Study hard for the DAT, get passionately involved, and don't worry about a thing. UConn is a state school and is the only dental school in New England, so your position is heavily favored. The other four I really have no place to say. To put it in perspective, though, if you look at some SDN member-stats you will notice that a majority of them have not been accepted into UConn or Temple yet, nor been invited for an interview at NYU. Based on how they look on "paper", in terms of objective stats [GPA and DAT], one may wonder why this is the case, but it just goes to show that there is no absolute answer to your question, nor a guaranteed cut-off for admission. Just remember that neither objectivity nor subjectivity alone will get you in ---sometimer either will suffice, however. It also depends on how well rounded you are, and to some degree how good a day the adcom member is having. Some of it is a little bit of luck, too. Plase note that there is a difference between getting an interview and being accepted. Unfortunately, IMO, getting invited for an interview does involve a a higher degree of objectivity than being accepted does [naturally due to the fact that the AADSAS app. is all they have to assess you, and at the interview they learn about YOU]. I apoligize for the random tangent, but I would just like to stress that there is more to your application than the DAT and GPA. Who "you" are matters too. Good luck to you!

I think you have just as equal chance for UConn as for BU, and Tufts, with BU may be easier to get into. With UConn, it is even better. If you do as you say on your DATs, AND express your desire to go to UConn, you are good. In my opinion, as well as in one of friends from college who looked at BU and Tufts, Tufts is better than BU, more humane treatment towards the students (not that BU is not - just my opinion). My friend from college, being accepted at both BU and Tufts, after all the questions to both of the schools, decidedly went to Tufts. I, on the other hand, would still prefer UConn, esp that i was accepted there!!🙂 i always wanted to live in Boston, but that can wait a bit.

One thing, don't apply JUST to these schools. Since I already went through this, I know that whether it is a better or worse school in relation to your stats, you might not get interviews at the worse stat schools - sometimes seems like interviews are out of the hat - and if you want to be out of the hat, u need to be more PROACTIVE.
What does that mean? Not necessarily calling the school up every time, but may be send an e-mail or one call, after you think they received the app. (~2 weeks after AADSAS sent it out) to verify that they have everything, and (preferably in writing) state that you are very much interested in their school (I e-mailed only 3 schools that I was very interested in -out of 15). Also, may be some other things may be applicable to you, as one thing was for me. I draw and also carve a little as my hobbies. So since that is an example of hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity, I asked those 3 schools whether I can send them the printouts of my drawings (from digital camera). This was a way for supporting my application, esp. that question about manual dexterity in the AADSAS. I don't know whether that helped me to be accepted, because I got interviews to those schools before I did that (or UConn just e-mailed me back and said that I can attach pictures in the e-mail and notified me right then that he reveiwed my application and the interview letter will be arriving shortly. This is just my experience. I know people, who i talked to at my college from years before, have sent their photography work, and pictures of sculptures that they did in photography and sculpture courses. How professionally you do this is up to you; what you send and not send is also up to you, just as question of doing something like this at all. Hopefully, this helps. GL

I went to the interview at UConn and I was accepted. I don't think your chances of getting in with a 19 are very good. When i went there, the dean of admissions told us that everyone who was interviewing that day had at least a 20 AA on their DAT's. He said that in order to even get interviewed, you have to have 18's across the board.

I don't think they look at PAT that much because i got a 17 and no one even mentioned it. They did however stress research since they have a heavy sci carriculum the first 2 years and have lots off opp. for research. So with DAT's 20+ (especially the science DAT score) good SCI GPA, research experience and shadowing will get you in. But you should really score above 19. 21 is solid in this case.

Well good luck and if you have any questions about the interview and etc... just ask

I have an interview at UCONN and my DAT scores are lower than 18's.

Don't give up hope on U Conn. I had a 17 in PAT and orgo and I received both an interview early in the game and acceptance, even with being an out-of-state and out-of-New England resident. Slight catch. . .I do have a 3.8 GPA (3.9 BCP).

Overall, I think it's important to remember that every case is decided invidually and there is no formula for their decisions. Multiple things that are not quantitative in nature are reviewed when making these decisions so apply, hang in there and be optimistic!

WS,
you make it sound like you weren't a good applicant.
heck, they would have accepted you even if those scores were 16 with a 3.9 GPA.

i dont know i was waitlisted at uconn and i have a 3.9 gpa (3.9 science) and a 21AA, 22 Science, 19 PAT on the DAT. Overall i was happy becuase i chose stony brook.

Glad you're happy with your decision. In the end that is all that really matters.

Your stats are just another piece of evidence that the admissions game is often extremely random and sometimes perhaps based on what an admissions member ate for breakfast, or what bills they received in the mail the day before. Random, random, random, and based on "gut feelings" as much as anything concrete or evidencery.

don't worry about the interview, it sounds scarier then it is. You will most likely have two interviewers but don't be intimidated, they will ask standard questions. I recomend that you know your application very well and are able to explain everything you stated on it. Here are some questions I got.

1) Please tell us about your research?
2) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
3) Would you like to do research here at UConn?
4) How do you see our heavy science carriculum playing a more important role with dentistry in the future?
5) What do you do on your free time

There were a few more questions and the interviewers took turns asking htem one after another but don't be scared they are all nice.

It's also a slightly long day because Dr. T will talk about their carriculum for a while (it is a bit different then at most other schools). But don't sweat it.

If you like the school then i recomed that you talk a lot about your love for research and lay off from talking about wanting tons and tons of clinical experience because as my interviewer told me, "if you are looking for a clinical school, this is not it."

Good Luck and if you have any more questions let me know.

serge i got an interview at uconn and i dont have 20s on all dat sections and on some not even 18.

Hey Woodsy, arent you going to med school instead?

I didn't have 20's in everything either. My AA was 22 and TS was 23 had a good ol 17 on the PAT and a 19 on QR. If you were from the states, I would say you are most likely in however you being from canada, i don't know how that would effect things. I'm sure one of our canadian SDNRS who has already gain admissions into a U.S. dent school can help.

Good luck with everything.

hey serge
i have an interview in uconn after 2 weeks. i am curious to know about clinical s there. i am least interested in research. i want to have good clinical skills. plzz enlighten about it
thank you

UCONN is still interviewing people?

i can't believe them. why are they scheduling interviews if they told me they already have too many people who have put down their dep than they have room for?

this is really bugging the hell out of me because:

1. they are lying to me and telling me that so that i don't call about my app. i am on their waitlist and were told that the class is more than full and so they won't even go to the waitlist.
2. i hate to see people waste their $$ for nothing.

you guys should call and ask them about this.

Pretty shocking as I thought UCONN was way beyond full at this point. I guess sometimes schools use an intentionally over conservative approach to fill seats and then ramp back up a little later in the cycle. Just my guess.

Hey Guys
hold on. its nothing what u think. i am an international student and will be joining the program if i get in the 2nd year.
the regular students that is u who will be doing a 4 yr r all decided n now it is for foriegn dentists. among us they select only one or 2.
i just needed some help so i posted that.
i hope i cleared the confusion
i am sorry for that😛

Hello,
is there anyone who has interviewed at uconn already this cycle and knows the exact time that their interview ends? also, anyone know how long it takes from the school to the bradley airport in hartfort?? thank you!

i just had my interview two weeks ago and i would say it will be done anywhere from 2-3:30. This happens because they will interview at the end and usually they have 8 people there but only 2 get interviewed at a time. The avg length was from 20-30mins. So if by chance u go first then you may be out by 2 but if last then closer to 3-3:30. hope that helps and goodluck

>knows the exact time that their interview ends?

Their interviews ended around 2:30 - 3:30.

>anyone know how long it takes from the school to the bradley airport in hartfort??

Sorry, I do not about this.. I am sure you can find the driving distance/time from yahoo map or some other sites.

Are you going to take a taxi? After my interivew I called for a taxi, and I had to wait 50 minutes. But if you are going to the airport, taxis may come within 10 minutes (that's what I heard).

Hali, the first interviews are at 1/130 and then the last ones end around 330/4. You should be outta there at 4. There were about 8 people in my group. Most of the interviews were 30-40 minutes.

I drove there from NY, but bradley shouldnt be too far from the health center. possibly 25-30 min? Not sure.

If you need anything shoot a message my way

THANK YOU all for the answers. originally i wanted to get on a 550 flight back home right after the interview....but, it's going to be a rush and very scary. i'll stay in ct for one more day then. thanks again everyone.
