UCONN Fall 2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yah I already got into UPenn, UMDNJ, waitlisted at Tufts, and am still waiting on BU.

I'll survive, just would have liked to go to UConn, but oh well!

Hey rob, if you don't mind me asking:

What kind of stats/ECs do you have? You got into some of the programs I was looking at apply to for the Fall 2010.

I'd rather keep it personal in terms of stats.

For EC, I worked as a drug rep for 3 years, been an EMT for 5 years (did 1000hrs of volunteer EMT work in '08). I had a bunch of stuff from UG too but thats the most recent stuff.

So do we know if anyone got in?

My check was finally deposited about 2 weeks ago but I have yet to hear a word or even get a return phone call or e-mail. I didn't get a rejection e-mail when those were going out, but it's June already and I would have thought they had have notified anyone who WAS getting in by now!

I haven't heard of anyone that got in. If they only deposited ur check 2 weeks ago, its possible you're in the last batch to be reviewed

New to this forum. received an interview for UCONN's post-bac for fall of 2009 but haven't heard anything yet. Has anyone gotten in? Already accepted to Columbia, Drexel and UVM. Would love to go to UConn but not sure I can wait. Any advice on the other 3 programs?

You're the only person here who seems to have gotten an interview. When did you interview?

Not sure how I got lucky but I interviewed the end of May but haven't heard of anyone who has gotten in. Trying to figure out Plan B if UConn doesn't come through.

When did you interview? This is really getting annoying. I have to respond to the other programs by June 20 and really would like UConn but afraid to say no and then not get into UConn. My other choices are UVM, Columbia and Drexel. Where else did you hear from?

Saved56 - Congrats on the interview! How did it go? What types of questions were you asked?

Unfortunately I still have not received an interview. But - I'm keeping faith! I'd like to know what it was like for you.

Keeping my fingers crossed for everyone!

I guess I'll have to go with putting a deposit down somewhere as it doesn't look like UConn will be coming through with an answer until July 1. Time for a pros and cons list for Columbia and Drexel and UVM. Any input?

Congrats. How did it go? Did they give you any indication when we might here? Putting my deposit down at Drexel just in case. Still hoping for good news from UCOnn.

Hi Guys, new to forum/sdn. I had an interview last week @ UConn. It was low stress and everyone was very nice. They told me I'd hear back near the "end of June, beginning of July" and since they're getting swamped w/ early decision med school apps and have vacations planned, I'm assuming it will be more like the beginning/middle of July. But that's just an assumption. Congrats to all who got interviews! Good luck!

The interview went great. How was yours? I was told that we should find out decisions by the "end of june, beginning of July" as well. I applied to the Minority full year program - I'm guessing that those who have applied to this program should find out soon seeing as though the summer program is supposed to begin in July.

I hope each of us gets in! I'm staying very positive for us all!

Still keeping my fingers crossed . . . :xf:

& Welcome Eric Blue!

Nothing so far. Just wish they would make a decision. Would like to know where I will be living in September-finding a roommate and apartment would be nice as well!

Hi guys,

I got a letter in the mail from Dr. Sanford today that said I am accepted.

Good luck everybody! Hope you hear good news soon.

Congrats, Eric!

I swear, this is one of the hardest programs to get into (at least it seems that way!). You are very fortunate. Make sure you make full use of the rare opportunity. Best wishes to Eric and all who are accepted or still waiting to hear back.

I am soo happy for you Eric!! I wish you nothing but the best.

I hope to hear some good news as well!!

:xf:

I'm so anxious!

Got my letter this afternoon. I'm in-now summer can start. Good luck everyone-Hope it's good news for all.

Hello all,

I'm new to SDN and this is my first time posting. I'm a CT resident and currently planning on applying to UCONN's post bac program for Fall 2010. I've been reading this thread for the past few days and find that most of the applicants seem to be Program B or Minority program applicants. Is this correct?

I'm a Program A applicant and would love some advice if anyone has experience applying as one.

Just to tell you a bit about me...

I'm currently in the Navy, stationed in Yokosuka, Japan. I will finally earn my BS in Psychology in May 2010 after 10 years as a part time student (it's very difficult to take classes full time while serving active duty). I have a 3.5 gpa and an 1100 SAT from 10 years ago, though I plan to take the GRE in September with confidence of a much high score.

Any advice you vets can offer would be appreciated! Thanks for listening to me ramble...

Cheers

Congrats again to those accepted!

I have a couple questions . . .

Which program have you been acccepted to (A/B/Full year)?

When does your program start?

I still haven't heard back - but I contacted Dr. Sanford - decisions are on their way!

Keeping my spirits up! 🙂

I applied to Program B. I already went through the basic pre-med requirements in undergrad.

I believe it starts right when UConn starts this year... I don't know the exact date, but I think its the end of August / beginning of September.

Good luck Pearly!

Have you heard anything yet PearlyWhites??? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for my fellow pre-dent!

Cheers!

Hi CDO-sorry it's taken so long to post. I will be starting Program A this fall. I was a Health and Societies major at Penn-thought I would do the MPH route and decided senior year to go to med school. The only pre-req I have taken is Biology. You have a decent GPA and obviously some life experiences to go along with it. UConn's application was far more involved than any of the other post-bacs I applied to. The others were Columbia, UMass, UVM, Drexel, & Tuft's and was accepted at all. The others mostly wanted a personal statement, grades and recommendations. I think UConn weeds people out on the post-bac application end. Everything was more like a med school app and interview. If they like you for the post-bac and you do well chances are good for their med school. (at least that's what I have heard and am hoping!!) I would focus on thoughtfu answers to the questions they ask on the app and conveying all your personnal (unique) info in your answers. I worked alot on the questions and my personal statement. Know it sounds corney-25 different ways to say why I want to be an MD, but I think they really want to know and focus on sincerity. Hope this helps-sorry for the long post. Good luck with the rest of your tour. Feel free to ask more. I'll let you know how it works out.

smgptcool-

Thanks a bunch for the info and advice. If you don't mind my asking, what was your gpa and ec's? Why do you think UCONN found you to be a good candidate for the program? I know that means asking you to brag about yourself, and most people aren't usually willing to do that, but I would appreciate a glimpse at what the standard accepted applicant looks like. I've been in Japan for so long and it's hard to get a good idea of what I'm up against- not that it's a competition... Don't get me wrong.

Cheers

Hang in there Pearly, Lynda Fox told me last week that only a few postbaccs have been notified and that interviews are still taking place.

Denied :-(

I received an email explaining to me that the dean of admissions for Dental School does not think that I need to complete this program, based on my grades in advanced science coursework. I was advised to take the DAT over (for better scores) and re-apply to Dental School. I was also advised to apply to a Masters program in the mean time. So was it really a bad thing that I wasn't accepted? I'm so confused! What do you all think about this? Thanks so much for listening . . .

I just started working on this application and getting everything together. I was wondering if somebody could help me with a minor detail. I know that the application needs two letters of recommendation to be considered complete. Does anybody know if these should both be from professors? Could one be from an employer? Do they prefer a teacher to a boss or vice versa? Any help here would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Based on what I've read on the forum, UCONN wants people they are confident can handle the course load. I would recommend getting two LOC's from professors who can talk about your academic abilities. LOC's from employers should only be used if you've been out of school for many years and have had no recent contact with professors. That's just my 2 cents...

Cheers!

Pearly,

That sucks! Maybe you should just reapply to DS. It sounds like you have almost all your ducks in a row to do so. Would you be able to retake the DAT soon and reapply for Fall 2010? I'm not familiar with your stats, so I'm not sure what your particular situation is and I'm new to this whole process anyway, so my advice is probably meaningless.

Sorry again.

Yes it does suck! But - I met with Dr. T and he again stressed that being a part of this program wouldn't be of any service to me. What lacked on my Dental application were my scores - on the DAT. He said taking courses that I already took (I double majored - received a Bachelors in Biological Sciences and a Bachelors in Molecular & Cellular Biology) would be pointless - seeing as though I didn't do too bad to begin with. Right now I'm a certified Orthodontic Assistant, so I will continue to work. I'm going to start studying for that DAT (yikes) again.

I also found this pretty interesting Masters Program in Oral Biology at NYU. I might apply to that in the mean time as well. It couldn't hurt to have another back up plan!

Your advice is NOT meaningless! Thank you for taking the time out to listen 🙂 & my best wishes go out to you!

Thanks CDO that was really helpful.

who applied to the postbac program and have you heard from UCONN as of yet?

I also applied to the Full-term Minority Post-Bac at UConn. Can anyone tell me what my chances are in getting accepted since I am an out-of-state- student? Also has anyone heard back from the program yet?

I also applied to the Full Year Minority Program and also an out-of-state candidate. According to Lynda Fox, the program accepts 2-4 applicants a year.

I spoke to Lynda before applying and she said to apply to both the minority and the program B (just because you have a better chance with 2 appl.) This was back in october and was told Keat Sanford will be reviewing after the end of october. I still had not heard from either of them(atleast give me an update even if iwas declined i expect some update). I even forgot all about this till now(haha). It seems they have a new Dept. head because it no longer goes to Keat Sanford and i wonder if anyones application was mixed up in the process...

Pushyourself, how long after you submitted your app until you received the 'your file is complete' email? I hope my app wasn't mixed in the process...all my stuff was addressed to Keat. They said they'd get back to you at the end of october?? And yet nothing? wow. hopefully soon!

I also applied to the Full-year Minority Program as well as Program A.

i NEVER got a file complete...i never got anything but the bank told me they cashed my money order like 2weeks later lol. I've tried contacting Lynda Fox but no reply. Did anyone else notice that there is a new Director and has anyone heard from uconn???

I have been trying to call and email but no response 🙁 Linda's voicemail message says that when your file is complete, Dr. Sanford will email you the confirmation....no news yet...

same here. I did e-mail Richard Yesterday for an update, so hopefully someone replies.

Hey pushyourself, I emailed Keat but no response and then emailed the new director who forwarded my message to Lynda who wrote me that my app wasn't complete but they still had lots of mail to go through and she will be contacting me next week if anything is missing. Have you heard anything?

I have to decide between some summer start date programs UCONN and according to last year's comments, it didn't look like they heard until July! ah! I'll already be 2 months into another program! we'll see! maybe this new director is quick! haha.

I received an email on Tuesday saying my application is complete. They will send out emails requesting interviews at the end of april/early may...and interviews could be scheduled as late as mid-may. :xf:
