UConn for out of staters

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From what I hear it's pretty hard to get in from out of state...I definitely got rejected pre-interview!

Hi, I'm from MA with average MCAT and good GPA. I didn't get an interview at CT. They took about 5mo to tell me that too.

Yeah UConn did that to me too...what's up with these schools not telling you anything about your own status? MtSinai didn't tell me I was rejected until well into April and I didn't find out through a formal letter either. That letter was preceded by an email advertising to me their masters program and began, "Since you didn't get into the MD Program...."

I got in as an out of state resident, but I had been in CT for college. I think the point the dean emphasized to me was that he wanted to know why I wanted to be in CT again, even though it wasn't "home" for me.

I am an older applicant from MA with good stats. UConn invited me right after I applied. To be precise, they sent me an invite in early November telling me that someone will contact me in March to schedule an interview. I guess they wanted to interview me only if I am still interested in them by the time March rolls around.

I may be wrong, but I think UConn has some sort of arrangement with New Hampshire residents. I think they get in-state tuition if accepted.

NH, RI, and Maine get a tuition break because they New England states that have no state schools. Not quite as low as for residents though.

My friend got into UConn this year as a MA resident. She was an amazing applicant though, who also go into several ivies and other top schools. A friend of mine got in a couple of years ago as a CA resident but had strong ties to the state. I got an interview as a CA resident and ended up withdrawing from UConn once I got into a UC. I grew up and went to high school in CT though. So without connections or great stats I am not sure how easy it is. They really like people who are into community medicine from what I have heard, so if you have work with the underserved and interest in that arena it could help you. Good luck.
