I'm having some trouble find information on UCONN's 1 year minority post bacc. If there is anyone that has gone through this program, or knows anyone that has gone through this program, please let me know. I have been trying to call their office, but they don't answer, and have yet to contact me regarding the questions that I have already asked.

I was mainly wondering what the students in the program do during the school year. Do they participate in the normal Program B? Also, does the program aid in retaking the MCAT, or is it like the GEMS/Wake Post Bacc's where the MCAT is not taken again. And Lastly, would be personally recommend this program? It seems as if your friend is now very successful, but the program seems very low key, and I don't see many former students speaking about the program anywhere on the internet.

" A Medical College Admissions Test review course will be offered through the Kaplan Educational Center to those students who have completed a typical premed program but whose records indicate a need to retake the examination. "

Yes, he really praises the program. There are about 200 applicants each year for around 15-20 spots (for program A & B) , 85% of students in program A and B get into a medical school but only about six are offered guarranteed admission upon completion of the program. However, I think it's safe to assume that as long as you succesfully complete the program you will have no problem getting into a medical school. He was offered a conditional acceptance along with his admission to the program. He recommended that you email Dr. Sanford as some of this info may have changed. (He graduated 7 years ago.)

Sanford did email me back. Told me to talk to Lynda Fox to set up an appointment about program B.

I know that they accept people each semester. In 2003ish they accepted 15 students.. and then some people got into medical school so they excepted 5 to fill the gap. I'm not sure if the class actually ever reaches 20 at one time.

I am going to write my essays like no other, but, I think in the end, the chances of getting into this is even less than medical school 😛

P.S. Wake forest deadline has already passed...

Do you know of any other programs like what you mentioned? Gems is probably going to be too expensive for me.. there is Drexel DPMS

I am also applying to EVMS medical masters.. but that isnt for disadvantaged..

i've applied with it being my first choice. I recieved an email from Lynda stating that all my application was complete and that I should be hearing from Dr. Sanford really soon. But the thing is, I dont recall sending in my transcipts, but maybe they ordered them for me?

Well I am a former alum of Uconn's post bac currently in anesthesia residency. I can answer a couple questions. Feel free to PM me with more. First of all I can not praise the program enough!!! When you start the program you are considered a grad student at the storrs campus. This has been in place for years so all the proffs at the college know about the program. You get an advisor at the college and medical school who picks your classes individually. You may be in college level classes, grad level or both. When i was there it was hard to know any other post bac students because you are taking classes with everyone at uconn storrs and usually there are only 12-15 post bac students in all anyway. You get a stipend to help cover tuition cost and kaplan mcat review classes. In the summer before you start ( or in between depending on when you start or if you are in the 2 yr program) you can do research, mcat prep, or med school prep at the SOM campus in farmington. There is also contingent acceptance into the SOM with a good performance during the postbac. Now its hard work and not easy- typically you are taking at least 14- 15 credits per semester and MCAT studying. For minorities accepted into the SOM most were given either full or partial tuition scholarships based on funding. There is also a new SOM dean who is AA and very well known nationally. The student population has been increasing in diversity prob 8-12% minority pop. Only downside -storrs and the SOM campus in farmington can get boring but otherwise It was the best move i ever did. I welcome any questions becasue i was there once too. I have interviewed med school applicants and post bac applicants as a med student at Uconn so feel free to pick my brain.

the tricky part is that the financial aid covers the tuition if you are an instate resident. You will have to come out of pocket or apply for loans as an out of state applicant. (Initially anyway). There were out of state students when I was there. I think you can change you place of residence after a few months to take advantage of the lower in state tuition cost. I think that is what they did to get around that.

I also have a question about this program. What are the statistics/requirements. what if youve had to retake many classes (like 5-6) but you have outstanding community service/leadership skills, great recomendation letters, and an 30+ mcat score? and youre a ct resident? what are the chances?

It proabbly depends on the circumstances of the poor grades and if your current grades/trends potentially can match the ideal uconn applicant in a year so prob 2.95ish - 3.45ish (B/B+)would probably be my guess..I was in the office the other day and saw the list of applicants with gpas ....from scanning the ppage that was what i saw mostly. the avg accepted gpa of accepted student at uconn is 3.67/3.7ish with 30+ scores so I guess if you show optimistim that you can get near that after 1 year and be a good fit for the medical school then.... I guess chances are high. Ive also heared of students getting rejected becasue there grades were too good..(for the science enhancers)..so i think probably after 3.5ish your getting into the "doesnt need this program" territory.

I am highly interested in attending the UConn Minority Program. The problem is I am a non-traditional student with less than impressive grades. I spoke with Dr. Sanford and visited the campus and feel very strongly that this program being the best choice and chance for success in Med School. I have been racking my brain and spending EVERY free moment working on their application since January and still don't feel that my passion and drive are being thoroughly captured on paper. Can you please give me advice about what the committee is looking for in a candidate. Also there are six secondary questions, so you have any advice on the best format for answering those. Any tips you can give will be of great help.

What type of program is the minority full-year program? Is it for those that could either apply to Program A or B and are a minority?? Or is it solely for Program B applicants (taken prereqs and mcat) that are minorties as well?

Personally, I am a minority, graduated college in Spring 2009 and would need all 8 prereqs (so I was looking at Program A but not sure if I should/can apply to the full year minority)?

Can anyone help clear this up for me? I already emailed Keat but didn't get a clear answer. Thank you!

I m an undergraduate at UConn right now and I m considering post bac program. I don't know where to go for it. I m nor sure of UConn post bac program is good. And I will hopefully have GPA of 3.4 and science GPA of 3.6 so, is it a good idea to consider post bac? Another thing I have to consider is the tuition for that. Also, what races come into the minority group??
