Hey everyone,

UConn is my top choice, especially considering financials. Anyone who applied/ is a current student what are/were your stats? I am in state, go to UConn-Storrs, have a brother who is currently a 2nd year at UConn SOM, and my father works as a physician at the Uconn Hospital. I have a 4.0, 514 on MCAT, great (but typical ) extracurriculars including 2 years of research, various long-term volunteering roles with leadership positions, some clinical hours (as an EMT) and shadowing. I also plan on graduating a year early to pursue a MPH then matriculating into medical school.

I know this is early to be thinking about since I'm applying in June, however I want to also know whether or not it is a good idea to go Early Decision? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

My advice probably isn't the best, especially considering that I recently joined, however, I think your statistics look amazing! Remember that medical school admission rates are very low, and even the best students are rejected from their top schools.

Best of luck, Technology

I have thought about this alot and I'm still trying to see if I can get some tuition off. However I want to do the MPH before because I don't won't to take time during medical school (like an gap year) to do it and I also don't want to add MPH classes during normal medical school classes. I have enough credits to graduate an entire year early from undergraduate so my thinking is exchanging a year of undergraduate for a year on my Masters. Financially, getting the Masters would only be 5K more so to me its a no-brainer to go for the masters instead of wasting money on a year of undergrad I don't need. I also feel like my application is strong enough that another year of undergrad will not help

Your call...

Why do you seem so against this? What is your opinion
Because financially it is not necessary and unless you plan on going into policy or some other public health related field as an MD the degree itself really isn't all that necessary. The MD alone will open the vast majority of doors. So essentially, odds are you may be wasting time and money. If you want to take a gap year, that's great. But use it for something other than school. Like travel. Do Americorps. Enjoy your last freedom before med school.

Don't apply EDP, it's usually not worth it.

You look like a competitive applicant for UConn, but apply to other schools anyway. It's better to have 3 interviews than 1 EDP interview.

Why do the MPH before med school when UConn offers a MD/MPH that is basically the same cost as the MD only?
I did pretty much what the OP is proposing, except I did my 1-yr MPH at a different school (not my UG). With competitive stats, you can get it paid for, so it saved me time and was free.

Generally best not to have all your eggs in one basket. A lot of the admissions process isn't objective, so you have to be perceived as a Good fit. As mentioned you have two family members affiliated with the school who I would think would be better resources than strangers on the Internet...

You are very competitive for U CT, and lots of other schools.
