Hello Everyone,

I was accepted to UCONN and was very excited. I loved UCONN because of its systems-based curriculum, its pass/fail grading, its opportunity for in-state tuition and it's closer to home (Boston).

I just recently received an interview invite from EVMS. I was wondering if anyone could comment on EVMS and if it may be a better choice than UCONN? I am trying to decide if I should attend the interview since I have spent quite a bit on interviews and missed many days of work.

I would really appreciate some input!

Thanks!!!

Hampton Roads is pretty nice. EVMS is very much a community outreach and service oriented school. Is that what you are looking for? EVMS is just now opening up a giant research center. If you care about that side of medicine, it may not be the best choice...in a few years though, I suspect there will be lots of research opportunities.

In addition to that very strong focus on community service in Hampton Roads, the cost of attendance at EVMS for an out of state resident can easily be 300k+.

For me, the tuition alone would be a deal breaker if I had other acceptances. But that's just me.

Even without the cheaper tuition, I would stick with UCONN. Much closer proximity to family is huge. Pass/fail looks nice. UCONN also appears to have a better reputation, from what I gather. I can't think of a single reason to go to EVMS.

Thanks for the input! I'm glad to hear that UCONN is considered a better school. I wasn't sure how UCONN was seen because it's not really talked about on SDN. I thought that this may have meant it wasn't well regarded.

Does anyone else have any opinions on UCONN or EVMS?

My one acceptance is to EVMS, but I'm in-state. Looking at the cost of attendance for an OOS person at EVMS, I will say you should definitely go to UCONN if you are in-state. And I know absolutely nothing about UCONN. I'm guessing they are close to equal, in which case you should save your money.

I would say UCONN is definitely the better school. UCONN is northeast is well known…most if you tell them you went to "EVMS" will reply with a "huh?"

It's Gene Parmesan, my favorite private eye!

But honestly, the nearly record-setting CoA for OOS students -- without any ostensible benefit -- is a real deal breaker to a school I would like to have visited. (I will have to withdraw my application before getting to go down there.) I supect if you ask an OOS student at EVMS how they chose their med school, the breakdown would be:

96% "It was the only school at which I was accepted"
3.9% "My parents offered to pay for med school. And I really hate them."
0.1% "I somehow managed to get tons of grant money from a gang of leprechauns who had not thought out properly how to profit from the venture."

Easy choice. Go to UCONN.

This may sound repetitive, but without consideration of tuition would you still consider UCONN a better school?
