Having difficulty with this one.

UCR:

Pros

-Cost is much cheaper + received scholarship of 40k (potential for more pending selection in 3/4 yrs). Scholarship is contingent on practicing primary, ob, psych, gen surg in riverside for 3 years.

-small program

-better area

-medical spanish program

-SO works in area

Cons

-newer school

-primary focused

-no home hospital so a lot of driving to rotation sites

-less research

-tougher if im going for competitive specialties

-really really small campus, school pretty much just has a small area. Opening new building but thatll be there for like 1 yr

USC

Pros

-prefer LA to Riverside

-has hospital on campus + way more resources and facilities

-research and connections are good for competitive specialties

-weather is better

-home programs for most all specialities

Cons

-COA is crazy

-large class

-recent scandals

-further from SO so id see them less often

Both P/F. Both are similar distances to home. My main goal is to stay in CA for my career (particularly SD or OC). My main issue is im undecided career wise. UCR is heavy on primary care while USC gives me more room to explore. Id definitely need to put way more effort to gain connections at UCR. COA difference at end of the day is around 150k, potentially more if I am selected for 3/4 yr scholarship at UCR and practice in those specialities.

If you want to do primary care, I would go to UCR. If you are unsure or considering other specialties I would definitely pick USC but that is just me. Absolutely go USC if you are considering a competitive specialty IMO

USC at full COA isn’t worth it. From the thread, it seems like most people don’t get FA. I would avoid paying full COA even if you want to do something competitive. There’s no guarantee you would get it at USC (unlike some other schools). If you end up wanting something competitive, do a research year if need be

Edit: since it’s 150k, I’m not really sure. Depends on the loan rates and such.
