So it looks like Im going to UCSD next year, and i was wondering if any of you knew if they preferred if we had macs or pcs....

specifically, are there any programs/networking issues involved that might make macs incompatible?

thanks!

hey envelope,

in the acceptance packet, they have a link to a website with the computer ownership requirement info which includes specs for both macs and pcs. you can choose either one of course. i got a 12 inch powerbook which i had been dying to get for awhile but getting into med school finally gave me a good reason to buy one. i hope there are no networking issues as its too late for me. if you like macs just get one they are so much better.

are you 100% set on UCSD? i'm not, but i'd still like to meet others that may be my classmates in the future.

I will most likely end up at UCSD also. I liked their program a lot. But I am still waiting to hear from some of the nor cal schools.
I am glad someone started this thread. Cool way to meet possible future classmates.

thanks dr. kevin for the info.

i really want to get a mac, but im just scared about incompatibility.

but yeah, im going to ucsd for sure as of now.

maybe i'll see ya at second look weekend =)

Congrats,

envelope, sinnah, and doctorkevin. As an MS1 here at UCSD, you're welcome to shoot me any questions you have about the school. As for the computer requirement, I have a confession to made. After years using using PC, I now switched to mac. Some of my classmates are using powerbook as well, as do the professors. So it does not really matter what kind you computer you have. You can also get by without a computer, as there are computers in lab and student lounge for use. Good luck and have fun this summer 🙂

Z.

hi z.

do you like ucsd? i had a really good impression of the school when i left after my interview...the students seemed happy.

some questions though:

what do you think about the curriculumn changes that have been occuring?

will i have free time to do research?

what are some flaws of ucsd?

how likely is it that i'll get cheap housing?

thanks for your time =) i really really appreciate it!

i have some too:

do you know anything about the summer transition program and do you recommend it for someone who's been out of school for 2 years (and consequently has become a bit lazy) and who did not major in science?

we've all heard that the first two years are a bit more challenging and "academic" than at other schools, but how hard is it really? having a limited background in science and all should i be worried about the first quarter?

is anything specific about the curriculum changing for next year?

thanks students.

yo, doctorkeven, did u get off the hold list at ucsf?? if so, congrats!!

not officially, i just got an interview with the JMP...

apparently they haven't decided for the regular program yet but the JMP is fine with me!

yea! fellow UCSD 2008ers!!!! let's get this party started 🙂 i'm excited about UCSD, and really, i think all that rumor about UCSD being a competitive school...doesn't necessary have to be true. school is what WE MAKE it. a friend who's in this year's 1st year class if having a great time, and it's because of the people around her. UCSD is H/P/F, but so are a bunch of other schools who have a low competitive atmosphere. let's become one of those schools. we've got lots of opportunities at UCSD to get involved with the COMMUNITY, it's not all about studying. so i'm very psyched for a place like this. the beach is only a few minutes away, san diego is beautiful, the research is awesome, and so are the people. i can't think of a better place to be for med school. looking forward to meeting future classmates!

and if anyone has any input on housing around san diego, that would be great!

cool, its nice to see this thread getting attention... is anyone doing the summer program? I can't decide whether or not I should fill out the application. I figure I'll still be on a waitlist or two in June anyway so whats the point?

where is everyone living?

Come on, Dr.Kevin... is it going to be UCI or UCSD? Stop stringing us along...

Your vomit over Irvine is like the sweet scent of roses to me. I can't get enough of it!

its good to see some potential classmates in here. While these next few weeks will play a big part in where i end up, ucsd is def aroudn the top of my list and id be very happy to be there next yr. as for living...im hoping for subsidized housing but there isnt much possiblity of that...so...maybe figure something out 2nd look..

Hey guys,

I'm currently an undergrad at UCSD, and I've been accepted, so I'll throw in my two cents.

On campus housing at the Mesa Apartments is extremely cheap (because it's university subsidized) but there's also a lengthy waitlist 1 1/2-2 years, I believe. There is on campus graduate dorms, which are about a 15-20 min walk to the medical school. Housing in La Jolla will be expensive, especially if you are not looking to share a room. I'd say ~$1200-$1500 for a 2 br apt.

I heard some good things about the summer program. It isn't graded, if I remember correctly, but I'm sure if you go to the second look weekend in April (anyone going?) you can ask more people.

Does anyone know when the second look weekend is? Also when is the white coat ceremony, school starting date?

the second look day is april 17th.

i'm planning on living in hillcrest if i go for sure. is that an expensive area?

i guess i will decide about the summer program at second look.

Looking at the newspaper listings,

For the Hillcrest area, 1 Bedroom apt's start at $800 a month, 2 Bedrooms apt's start around $1300. The area is great because there are lots of good restaurants in the area, but it's kind of far to campus (need to commute up I-5). But there is the Med Center shuttle...

hi ya all

do u know what second look weekend is all about?
its on april 17th right?

if you guys want a good idea of what you might end up paying for housing, check out http://offcampushousing.ucsd.edu/

you can search the listings by using the temporary login. just click the "UCSD Staff, Faculty, and temporary Login" and enter this:

user: temp
pass: temp2k2

off-campus living here is pricey.

Haha, I actually went to UCSD as an undergraduate. Class of 2000.

Anyway, funny story. When I first moved there, I was looking for restaurants for Valentine's Day. I found one Italian restaurant (I LOVE Italian) in Hillcrest. When I told my gf about it, she thought it was funny. I asked why? She said, "you'll see".

So we go to dinner and I suddenly notice a LOT of male couples around me. Hmmm....then she was like, you understand now?

Hillcrest is the gay area of San Diego. So if you don't mind living there, it's all good.

out of nowhere really.....but im guessing doctorkevin has probably done his research

i'm goign to second look! hope to meet some cool potential classmates 🙂

i'm probably goin to school here! look forward to meeting all of you at second look.

do u guys know when ucsd will send out financial aid packets to us?

sd's second look is the same day as la's second look. sux for people who got in to both places. good thing i dont have to worry about that.

i'm not sure what the deal is but i would like to know when my fa packet is coming too, anyone know?

Are you talking about the actual application or notification of how much you'll be getting? Anyway, if it's the application you are looking for, check the ucsd status page. There should be a link to a pdf file which contains the application.

nah i was talking about how much i'm getting. the applications were emailed to all accepted students awhile ago.

I'm still waiting on awards too...they are contacting students about merit scholarships, though.

When I called the fin aid office last week, they said they had not even started processing the applications yet because they don't have a budget yet. The lady said they are just collecting info from everyone and won't actually process the files until april probably.

does anyone know what the chances are of getting into a 1 bedroom or studio on campus for the fall? i put myself on the waitlist in december.

I somehow doubt that its as hard as westwood and SF unless you are talking about finding something reasonably priced in La Jolla. Personally, I'm going to look for reasonably priced more towards downtown which should not be as difficult. I think many students live on campus/ in La Jolla and but considering the prices and amount of space there you shouldn't have a problem finding AN apartment.

However, I've only stepped foot in SD twice. Anyone?

There are tons of apartments both near UCSD (1-3 miles) and further out. The problem is, all the apartments near UCSD cost an arm and a leg unless you have at least 2 other roommates. For example, a one bedroom apartment will run you $1000/month easy (if not more.) A 2 bedroom will be $1200-1300 at the least if I'm not mistaken. If you don't mind driving 10-15 minutes from your place, the aparments become way cheaper.

By the way, you guys check out my new sig? 😀

By the way, where is all the enthusiasm from future Triton med students? We have less than 50 posts on this thread while other schools like UCLA and USC have hundreds. We can start by talking about the weather we'll be enjoying. Aside from Hawaii, we've gotta have the best weather in the U.S. Everyone with me on that one?

I believe it's actually the best weather in the world. At least it was that way when I went there for undergraduate. 🙂

CONGRATS ALEXANDER

All it takes is a few very cool, well-rounded people to make this thread come alive, and the class come alive in the Fall. We can double the size of the USC and UCLA threads man. 🙂

WHO FREAKIN' EXCITED ABOUT SAN DIEGO?

I am 🙂 🙂

Are you going to second look?
