Hello current UCSD postbacc-ers!!!

I understand that the UCSD postbacc program is fairly new and I wanted to ask any current students in the program (2013-2014) to share some stories/successes/advices to us future applicants to this program. I would be interested to apply to this program and any response will be appreciated!

thank you very much so!

Yay!! This is my very first post on SDN everrrr!!!!

Umm... The deadline was January 15th for UCSD's postbac program iirc.

Anyone hear anything yet on an interview invite?

I got an email from the program coordinator saying that he received all the materials for the application except for my LORs. I hadn't submitted any because I didn't have any when I turned in my application in January, but have since received two (I just need one more for all the other schools *frustrated sigh*), so I sent them by Interfolio and emailed him back. No words on interview though and honestly not really counting on it either. This program seems tough to get into.

Just received another email saying they are reviewing applications in preparation for the admissions committee today. Hope we hear back something more soon!

Applied and got everything in on time, nervous and excited. 3 LOR's, 2 from MD's and 1 from a physics professor (head of the science department) Good luck everyone! Just recieved an email today confirming all items were accounted for on my application.

@erure: awwwhhhh. i guess i missed the deadline.

But, I've been going through the UCSD postbacc threads and NO ONE from the current cohort ever responded to any of them. I wonder what the reasoning is... but hopefully it's just because they are busy. We do hope someone from the current class would respond to us. 🙂

On the website it says that interviews will be between Feb 15th and March 15th, so hopefully we'll hear back soon. It looks like a very competitive program, especially since it's the only UC that does not have a requirement of being a disadvantaged/URM student.

Hopeful for an interview... anyone interested in a "what are my chances" conversation for this thread?

Don't find it particularly useful myself. The accepted GPA last year ranged from 2.8 to 3.7, with a wide range of experience and backgrounds. Hoping they look past just numbers and see us for who we are, and what we have to offer as future physicians. Best of luck to everyone! 🙂

@clizgreen: wow that's a huge range. They must value experiences as well. I wonder what the program's plans are for those at a lower GPA range. This is why it would be great to hear from someone in the program.

I was facebook stalking the program and it seems like they have a pretty big class of ~30 students. I wonder how they are all fairing academically.

Just spoke with Joel Tolson, the post baccalaureate program coordinator. He informed me the admissions committee is still reviewing applications and is hoping to have invitations out next week. It is apparently taking them longer than expected. Good luck to everyone!

I got the interview invitation via e-mail from the director of the program. Hope the interview dates are set up soon!

Just got the interview invitation I am soooo happy just gotta kill this interview! Congratulations to all who got the invite!

just got my interview email today afternoon by email as well!

can those who have received an interview invite post their stats, if they don't mind? I just want to see what types of students they are selecting. I haven't heard anything from them and I am a bit nervous since most of you guys already have. Thanks

Just got an Email for an offer on the interview waiting list. I am not sure how that works but that is better than a rejection I am sure. GL to everyone else and congrats to those who have an interview.

That sucks I'm sorry. May I ask what your stats are? PM is fine too. Thanks.

Is there linkage?
Does this program provide a direct linkage of acceptance to UCSD Medical School or any other UC campus and degree program?
Participating in a UC San Diego Extension educational program does not in itself provide preference in admission to the University of California degree programs. Students interested in applying to UC degree programs should refer to the UC Admissions website or the admissions office of the UC campus they wish to attend for details about the admissions process.

I received an interview invitation as well!

cGPA: 3.37 sGPA: 3.1 MCAT: haven't taken it yet

For those who got an interview invitation: has anyone received an email to schedule the interview?

I emailed the individual setting up the interviews and he said he's hoping to get all interviews completed by March 27th, so I'm sure we should be hearing within the next week hopefully!

Still nothing yet! Does anyone know how many people got interviews or how many from the interviews they are going to take?

Hello! I am currently a post-bac student at UCSD. So I didn't know about this site, and that is why I have never responded! If you still have questions I would love to tell you about my experience with the program.

Awesome!
1)How has your experience been?
2)Have you applied to medical school yet?
And most importantly for me anyway...
3)what can we expect in the interview (questions, etc.)?

1. My experience has been really great, this was the first year through extension so there have definitely been some administration things for them to figure out, but hopefully they get most of that figured out with our class! The best part of the program, in my opinion, is that each person gets an advisor who you check in with and can ask any and every question you have about med school apps/med school/MD vs DO/etc. There are also a lot of good resources for adding experience and also figuring out what it is about your study habits that need help/should be altered. We also got to sit in on some actual med school classes.

2. I am applying this next cycle, which is basically what the program is getting you ready for. So I start my app in May.

3. The biggest thing for me in the interview was basically why are you applying to the program? Especially versus applying right into medical school. It is important to know how you fit in as a post-bac student. For example, I had previously applied to medical school and did not get in, however I have a pretty well rounded application and am not lacking anywhere obvious, so this program is a great way for me to get some more experience, show my dedication, and figure out where I can strength my application. Maybe you need help with your GPA, study habits, learning more about the medical field, maybe you were not a biology major, etc. If you are able to recognize the weak points in your application and can convey how this program will allow you to fix those problems and be a successful medical student then they will recognize that you will make a great post-bac student!
