UCSD Postbacc program 2014-2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i haven't heard anyone get rejected on this forum yet, so i'm making that assumption... LOL 😛

Congrats to those who got in! I still haven't heard anything though 🙁 any suggestions for what I should do? I am very concerned now since a lot of people have received their letters and I still haven't. Also did anyone hear specifically that those who interviewed were accepted?

Congratulations to everyone who got accepted! I also just got my acceptance today and am very excited. I am a current undergrad at UCSD so if any of you that have decided to attend UCSD for the program have any questions about UCSD in general, please message me!

I'm in, too 🙂 So everyone that got interviewed definitely did not get in…I think it was a lot more competitive than you guys think. Maybe not, but I'm pretty sure Mr. Kryzwicki told me that they got 500-600 applications to the program (way more than last year), held 62 interviews, and planned to cap the program at 30 students (like the website says). It is a little odd that everyone on this forum got accepted, but I don't think I would be too excited to share my rejection news on a forum like this…. anyways, I need to find a place to live STAT and would love to get in touch with some people who are in the same boat. I'm trying to find a place that's walking distance to campus.

Accepted with a 20,000 scholarship. so excited!!!
Were you by any chance interviewed by Dr. Kelly? I think whether or not you got a scholarship really depends on who you were interviewed by. My interviewer had no idea about the scholarships and how they work it all out.

I also did not get a response today I have a feeling I didn't get into the program but anyways good luck to all of you guys and congratulations again with you acceptance 🙂

Don't give up hope, whether you get in tomorrow or are offered a wait list position. Don't let anything stop you from achieving your goal of becoming a physician.

Wow you are ver lucky! I don't even know how I am going to afford the program. :/[/QUOTE

nope. I was interviewed by Dr. Lindia

I'm a parent of a recent applicant who also received a Congratulations letter. Congratulations to all of you. We own a 4 bdrm home in San Diego. My son who will be a fellow student occupies a room. The existing roommates are moving out at the end of this month and we will be painting, carpeting and landscaping prior to the start of your new school year. I think it would be advantageous to all to have the home occupied by fellow UCSD post bacc students. I know your finances are tight so rent will be 500 per month plus utilities (split utilities by 4) or 600 per month which will include utilities. It's a great house, fully furnished (except for individual bedroom furniture), located on Highplace Dr in SD. It is a 30 minute drive to campus so I hope the savings in rent helps validate a little commute. Again. Congratulations to all. You can message me if interested.

IN! Congrats to everyone else as well! Should we start a facebook group so we can get to know one another/see if living situations can be worked out through that as well?

Yes, I was thinking the same. I don't have a personal FB but I have a blank page that I use for work….I'll try to make a group page right now and link you all to it

Yes, I need to figure out the living situation as well! I'm going to make a facebook group so check facebook soon for UCSD Post Baccalaureate 2014-2015 and hopefully everyone can figure out living situations through that. It might make it easier! CONGRATS!

Ah, we have to be friends first. What are your guys' names?!

I recommend living as close to campus as possible. Although you will be spending more on rent ($650-$950 per month for your own room), you won't have to pay for gas nor parking which at the very least will cost you and additional $200 per month. Not to mention that commuting during rush hour traffic can make your commute double as long. Also, finding parking at UCSD can be difficult, and all this extra time spent on commuting can be spent studying or sleeping. =)

If you begin searching for places near UCSD I would suggest the "UTC area" which is a short bus ride away from campus. I don't know if we will receive UCSD student ID's, but UCSD has "city shuttles" that run Monday through Friday from 7am to midnight and are currently free for students and staff (all you need is your ID). Living anywhere near these shuttles is very convenient because during the school year there is a shuttle every 7 minutes (I believe during the summer it is every 10-15 minutes). Here is link with a map showing the shuttle route so you can see if the places you are looking at are nearby:

Some of the popular apartment complexes where UCSD students like to live include:
Costa Verde Village
La Regencia
Regents Court
The Venetian
International Gardens
Whispering Pines

There are many more, but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head...

Here is a list that UCSD has compiled of some of the apartment complexes nearby. I think this list is old and the prices are not up to date, but it can be a good resource so you have somewhere to start.

Generally apartment complexes are more expensive than townhomes. I would say the average price for a 2 bedroom apartment is around $1800. Because they are so expensive, students usually "double up" in each room, cutting their rent in half.

If you prefer to have your own room at a price that is a bit more affordable, I would suggest you you live in a townhome instead where a single room will cost you $650 at the very least (but these are hard to find).

Hey there! So I'm a current post bacc student here at UCSD and I'm on that low end of the GPA spectrum (2.89). Not even ashamed. Why you may ask? Because it has nothing to do with how stupid I am, it had to do with the fact that I was involved in SOOOOO MANY different things during undergrad. Worked 25 hrs a week, played a sport, was on a board for a national conference, on the board for my sorority, worked in a free clinic,... that was my entire last 2 years. In the first 3 (yes, I took 5), I also had some clubs sprinkled in there.

So, when I walked into my interview the first thing my interviewer asked me was what I think I needed to work on. So we talked about my GPA for almost the entire interview. She is my advisor now (coincidental) but she has me completely optimistic, as I should be because I'm getting all A's! So it's possible, for everyone.
Hey I was wondering when you took the mcat? Will this years cohort need to take the new mcat In 2015? And how are things going for you in the program? Are you optimistic for the upcoming cycle?

Just got my acceptance email! But I'm still waiting for other schools before I make my decision. Anyway check your inbox!!
Hey, you got into Georgetown smp? Isn't that one of the best in the country? With a linkage as well?

Yup I got into Georgetown SMP end of March and then found out about UCSD's acceptance about two weeks after. I don't know if it's one of the best, but I think it's one of the more well known and oldest. They interview around the top half of the SMP class and I think around 15% end up at Georgetown SOM, but no official linkage.

Cincinnati is my top choice but I got waitlisted and I haven't heard back from RFU, so I'm trying to decide between Georgetown and UCSD. UCSD is my alma mater but I think I might appreciate the change of scenery.

I already got my letter of rejection lol im still hoping to hear back from one of these other UC schools though. If not I'm just going to study for the MCAT and take it in November before they add the new sections to the test and reapply in December.

Am I the only one who's starting to think that they cannot afford this program?

Between the tuition and housing I don't think I could have afforded it as well considering the loans I already have as an undergrad. I have family out in Irvine though so getting into UCI postbacc would be awesome.

Am I the only one who's starting to think that they cannot afford this program?

It seems like an expensive program:

7,500 (tuition) X 4 = 30,000
600 (housing) x 13 = 7,800
500 (misc. expenses: food, gas, etc.) x 13 = 6,500
======================================
TOTAL: roughly $44,300 of private loans :wow::wow::wow::wow::wow:

I don't blame you for a second for thinking that you cannot afford this program. I am hopeful that the other UC programs (UCI, UCSF, UCD,UCR) are NOT as expensive. Otherwise, it will be a huge battle for everyone planning on pursuing these programs.

Does the department of education not give out student loans for postbac programs?
