Hey all,

Just got word that UCSD's radiation oncology residency program was approved at last week's ACGME meeting. As I understand, they will have a spot(s) available for July of 2012 for people applying into the match this year. Spread the word for all those interested.

Yes, they will. It sounds like it takes a few days to register and get an NRMP/ERAS program ID, but they should be on the list of programs within a week or two.

any idea how many spots they will have for this year's match?

I think two, I'm not sure though. Should be up on Frieda by next week.

Here is a link to the residency website with info regarding ERAS:

http://radonc.ucsd.edu/education/medres.asp

It sounds like it might actually take a few weeks to actually show up on ERAS, but as Dr. Mundt mentions on the website, they will be in well before the December deadline for everyone applying this year.

A quick update.
It still looks like a couple more weeks till the UCSD program appears on ERAS.
We will be in the upcoming match and plan to conduct our interviews in January.
I will post a note here when our program appears on ERAS.

We also plan to review applications from individuals who could start earlier than July 2012.
If you would like to be considered for a residency position starting prior to July 2012, please email me at [email protected] along with your CV.

A.J. Mundt MD
Program Director and Chair
Department of Radiation Oncology
UCSD

The program is listed on ERAS now for those interested.

Dear Dr. Mundt,

You highlight the exceptional research opportunities at UCSD on your website, but there are no specifics given about research time for residents at your program. How much protected research time would you be willing to offer a resident with significant research experience who would like to pursue an academic career? Would you support a Holman pathway resident?

Thanks for fielding my question.

It might be best to email Dr. Mundt directly. I don't know how often he checks this forum.

anyone familiar with the program know how many spots they're looking to fill this year?

Good News! The University of California San Diego Radiation Oncology Residency Program was just approved for a total of 8 residents which means we'll be taking 2 in the upcoming match.

Does anyone have any updated thoughts on UCSD's Rad Onc residency?

Hard to have thoughts about a program which has yet to graduate any residents:

'Yea' sayers = Dr. Mundt is awesome! The faculty is tops! Protons are on the way! It's SAN DIEGO, duh!

'Nay' sayers = No track record for graduating residents and therefore no alumni base to help you when it comes time for jobs; quality of didactics unknown; true nature of resident clinical rotations unknown (until they actually have residents)

Ultimately it boils down to a leap of faith and how comfortable you felt during interview day.

I spent several months there recently (maybe I'm giving myself away to some, but honestly, I have nothing but good things to say about the program!). It's an excellent program. I would have absolutely loved to have gone there to be honest. Several excellent teachers there. The residents I met were highly motivated and knew their stuff. Very high quality, evidenced-based medicine practiced by all the docs. The physics support is absolutely phenomenal. Everyone is super nice and happy too. Case volume is outstanding...they have a Kaiser contract so they see everything. If anything, things are maybe just a little too busy honestly. You'll easily meet case load requirements by year 3, and if I'm not mistaken it is a 3+1 program with 1 year of research. They have all the bells and whistles when it comes to technology. I mean, anything new, they get it. Regarding connections, I can't speak to that, but I'd imaging Mundt, Yashar, and all the rest of those big names (who are all exceptionally nice I might add) have some connections and sway. You'll certainly be competitive for San Diego and surrounding areas which can't hurt. Your CV can easily be padded too because having Mundt behind you is certainly going to help when it comes to ASTRO presentations, etc. I believe their first year gave or is giving (can't remember which one) an oral presentation at ASTRO. Again, I have nothing to gain from this either...I just can't speak highly enough about the program.
