So I have been accepted to two very different pharmacy programs (UNC and UCSD) and I am having a really hard deciding which school to attend in the fall. I was wondering if anyone could give me insight into this. I really appreciate your help!

UNC if you are an NC resident.
UCSD if you are an CA resident.
I don't see why anyone would want to pay an extra 100K in student loans if they don't have to...I would rather buy a new car with the extra money.

Haha, funny all my born and raised SD friends all didn't want to go to UCSD. Most of my Bay Area friends didn't apply to Davis/Berkeley and went south. All my transplant friends from LA/Bay Area who went to SD loved it and found jobs in SD.

I think if you spend 18 years in one area as a kid/adolescent, you just can't wait to get the hell out.

So again, UCSD...especially if you love them hot nerdy azn girls in skimpy outfits.

People all seem to have very diverse opinions. If you don't mind me asking, why do you say UCSD stinks besides academics/research? I am an NC resident- so UNC is most logical, but I have personal reasons for wanting to make a move to SD. I am wrestling with desire vs logic.

As for UNC- I hear it is a very cut-throat program. Not a lot of professor-student interaction and its very independent. From what pharmacists have told me, its really competitive with other students throughout the program as well.

It depends on the individual. If you just want to study and not necessarily socialize that much, UCSD is a fine place. The thing with UCSD (and I may equate this more with an undergraduate experience) is that there is no sense of community at the school. This may be different for the pharm. school since there's only 60 students.

About the area:

La Jolla is a very quiet, wealthy, conservative part of San Diego. Incredibly beautiful but a pain if you're a student IMO. There are really no restaraunts, shops, coffee shops, gas stations, etc. The place simply does not cater to students (undergraduate or graduate). It's a great place if you like to surf.

A good thing about learning pharmacy in San Diego is the close proximity to Mexico. You can probably work with the Hispanic community down near the border.

It would help me more in offering my opinion if you tell me why you want to move to SD.

Also, this is just my opinion obviously.

Whaaaaat. Man, I partied so much in San Diego, it's not even funny. Granted, most of my friends lived out in Mira Mesa and we'd throw raging house parties. Obviously La Jolla is high class and quiet, but you're not exactly limited to the area.

Yeah I know. What you're saying is not necessarily inconsistent with what I said. I was referring to La Jolla. There's a reason why La Jolla does not allow raging parties to go on in that community and hence, no greek row. The people with million dollar homes will be very upset. Hell, they even got upset when they tried building a new movie theater and a Burger King in the area years back. It's all about property value to the residents there. This is why it doesn't cater to students.

Granted, you can go down to SDSU or TJ and it will be very social.

Although I have no regrets of going to UCSD for my undergrad, I do feel that the campus seems kind of dead sometimes compared to other campuses like UCLA or Berkeley.

UCSD gets a football team, it WILL suck because it can't compete with recruitment w/ USC and UCLA just up the 5 AND it can't crack the Pac-10 and will be in some "don't give a crap" conference. It would be a money sinkhole and people would just complain about it. In the meantime, you've just gutted campus athletics' budget.

Look at Davis.... boring campus (cool in its own right) before football....just as boring after football, except that ONE time it beat stanford and people thought it was cool. Now students are out the $300+ for the self imposed fee. 😴😴

Yeah I guess...but people who vote for these types of fees expect a USC to plop down in the middle of their campus and magically revitalize everyone. That's not how the world works. I think the fees at Davis amounted to $315/yr per student (someone correct me if I'm wrong) to move UCD football from DII to DI. Plus, people who voted for it weren't around for the consequences.

Worth it? Hardly...it screwed up their other sports, burdened students with $1200 extra over their 4 year degree. That's 3 netbook laptops, not exactly chump change.

I vote for the school with the smallest class size if money is no object of concern.

UNC's class is huge and though I don't have personal experience with the pharmacy school, I do with undergrad. I'm proud of UNC and I feel like I've learned a lot in undergrad but it's very much dependent on how well you learn on your own or with classmates instead of what you get out of lectures or from interacting with professors. I would bet that the pharmacy school is similar. It's just hard for one professor to have a personal relationship with 150-ish students.

I've definitely learned my lesson about UNC and will be applying to smaller pharmacy schools that seem to care more about their students' learning experience. However, for the cost of tuition (in-state), it's probably worth putting up with the drawbacks. That being said, its hard not to love the Tar Heels or the campus in the fall/spring. It's really a love/hate relationship. 🙄

As a former student UCSD, its definately a quieter campus than the top two UC schools(LA and Cal). The city naturally brings that out. Compared to other cities or regions, San Diego/La Jolla is a pretty laid back area. So if you want a school with a chill attitude and beautiful campus, than UCSD would be an excellent place to go.

As a former student UCSD, its definately a quieter campus than the top two UC schools(LA and Cal). The city naturally brings that out. Compared to other cities or regions, San Diego/La Jolla is a pretty laid back area. So if you want a school with a chill attitude and beautiful campus, than UCSD would be an excellent place to go.
