talked to some ppl at my home institution and they said that UCSD is a decent program. their retina dept is pretty solid with Kang Zhang (has NIH $$) and Bill Freeman (Freeman heads up Jacobs Retina Ctr, which is just retina research). la jolla is beautiful.. not sure how affordable for residents, but certainly a consideration. i'm definitely going to check it out.
didn't apply to UT-memphis, so I have no idea about the program.
