Hey guys. so here's my story:

For the last two years I've been attending a community college. I am transferring to a 4-year college officially in the fall. I've planned my classes though, so that I could get my degree in a year. So I applied to dental school this year in hopes of getting in for Fall 2007. Obviously I don't have any 4-year college coursework on my AADSAS application, but I didn't think this was a problem until I got an email from UCSF...

"The University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry is in receipt of your AADSAS Application. Unfortunately, the review of your AADSAS information indicates that you are presently ineligible for admission consideration to UCSF owing to one or more of the reasons indicated below:

** Your AADSAS application presents insufficient 4 year-college units for review consideration.

Since you are ineligible for admission at this time due to the reason indicated above, we do not expect you to complete the additional UCSF supplemental application packet, nor pay the separate application fee. Therefore, your AADSAS application is hereby cancelled."

UCSF wasn't my first choice of school of anything, but this just got me worried that maybe some schools would cancel my application for the same reason, and that everything I've been doing was a waste of time and money. I didn't see any of this as a requirement anywhere before.

what do you guys think? Will most schools not like this? Or is UCSF just picky?

Feeling worried and depressed,
kb

ucsf is quite rigid when it comes to coursework, look at their website and see if they made a blunder. Their website covers a lot on number of units required before applying and all that. I don't think other school give that much ****, but ALWAYS ALWAYS call the school. The schools are more than willing to help you out. Anyways, I wish you best of luck.

UCLA, UNLV and UOP might give you the same story. This happened to my friend last year. Give em call see what they say.

are you serious?? erggg..
yeah i was thinking of calling them. but its the weekend. ill just have to suffer through all this worry for two more days. thanks

Sorry to hear this. UCSF also requires a Biochem Intro course (this is not offered at CC), but only first half of Organic chem if I remember correctly. I think USC requires that you have a BS. I may be wrong. You might want to add some more schools to your list. Although your academic records and your dat are nice, not having a BS and lack of 4-year classes can be a big disadvantage, esp. to Cal schools. Also, if you haven't noticed, UOP requires a minimum of 17 in each section. And PAT and RC are really important to them. Good Luck!

thanks for your input..but does it really matter when i get my BS, as long as i get it before matriculation? Because i'm planning to get it before entering.

As long as you have the B.S. before matriculation you are fine.

have you taken orgo? physics? inorganic? bio? and english classes? if so you should be ok somewhere at least, I would think.

I assume that you mean a Bachelor's degree of any sort, not just a BS.

Yes! I've finished all the prerequisites for most schools - all the general and orgnaic chemistry, physics, biology, english, calculus. The only thing I don't have yet, but will before matriculation is biochemistry.

the thing is.. my transcript only has all these prerequisite courses, and no upper divison ones..And I guess they want to see those classes incorporated into my GPA also.
man, ucsf sucks.

Unfortunately the other schools in California will tell you the same thing.Good luck

Why? or how do you know?
Thanks

What is your intended major? Reason I ask is I don't see how you can be junior transfer and be able to finish up all the upper division requirements in just one year, especially in L&S at Berkeley. Keep in mind it's a very crowded school, certain classes are hard to get and seniors will have priority over you.

UOP would probably have been your best shot for CA schools. I have several classmates that spent two years at CC, only 1-1.5 years at a 4-year and didn't even get their BS. The big thing holding you back is your PAT score however.

USC is the only CA school that states you must have a bachelor's degree to even apply, so they may scrutinize your application and intended course schedule more. UCSF and especially UCLA are research heavy. How are your extraurriculars? Doing research for a famous PI and getting a rec from him goes a very long way with these two schools.

Thanks for replying sherm. I'm majoring in Integrative Biology. I'm taking summer classes right now, and will use the next summer session to finish my last classes end of June (which is cutting close, but should be okay for UOP as I'm told by admissions). The reason I'm able to do this is because I finished all my general education requriements at the community college using IGETC and transferred 70 units. I only need fifty units more, mostly all in my major so I'll be taking around 18-19 these next two semesters...

I'd love to go to UoP, but I know they like high PATs so I'm just hoping for a miracle. I also don't have any research experience what so ever. I knew UCSF was more research based, but UCLA also?

But, do you guys think I should add anymore schools? I emailed Columbia and they said they'd still at least look at my application even though I hadn't taken any 4-year college classes..so I might add them, Temple and Case.

not true.. ucsf doesn't not weigh research that heavily.

When it comes to research experience, does it have to be dental research for it to look good or can any type of bio research be good enough?

Don't do Case, they won't look at you without a 19 in every section, they told me that personally. They may give you an alternate list interview in April because of your other stats, but you won't get one before dec 1st. Try Penn, Tufts, they have high out of state numbers and a little bigger of a class so better chances.

Based on your stat and your condition, the only thing you can do is to add Work in Progress courses on your AADSAS, that way universities would be able to see that you are attending a 4 yrs univeristy and taking courses there. Even if you are not sure about exactly what you are taking, look into the university catolog you are planning to attend and make a course list for Fall/Spring and even if it is changed..I do not think it matters as long as you have all the pre-req which you do. That is the only way you can tackle this concern without being denied from your school choices. best of luck👍

This was my very same thought. You probably did not list sufficient "work in progress" to qualify you as having completed the 90 or so units needed to qualify for admission. Make adjustments to your AADSAS and then call UCSF and discuss it with them. Tell them there was a mistake on the AADSAS that has been corrected and that you would like your file reopened once received. For the time being you wouldnt mind filling out the secondary and pay the fee. It sounds to me like they were just trying to save you money given you submitted an incomplete application. Many other schools would have just taken the money and run. Contrary to popular belief UCSF does not suck. Often they have the students interests in mind when they make decisions.

Well, I had "work in progress" filled out for this coming fall semester - but not spring. Maybe that would have helped? I tried going on AADSAS, but it doesn't look like I'm able to change the "course" section. Am I just looking at the wrong place? Should I call AADSAS to change this?

Maybe UCSF is the good guy here, saving me some money. Then UCLA may have just robbed me of $60! 🙁

If I remember correctly, there will be a time period (later in the cycle) when AADSAS opens up and lets you update your courses in progress. You can call them and ask when it will be for this year. I agree with Da Bomb. There are a few schools that actually pre-review your files prior giving out secondary and asking for additional fee. Others would ask for the fee before doing any reviewing. UCSF definitely has a heart, especially for their students and the community. Good luck!
