I know many people are still anxiously waiting for decisions, but for those who are admitted, maybe we can all introduce each other and try to bond before school starts in Sept.

are you sure you are going to UCSF? I love the school but i have to wait for the non rolling decisions.

I think I am going there, unless I get a significantly better financial aid package somewhere else

Hello, my name is Shemarty and this is my first post in the Allopathic forum 😛

I'm ridiculously excited for UCSF (Bay Areaaaaaa!), but I'm also waiting on a couple notable non-rolling decisions and financial aid/scholarship info before making a final decision.

I'm sure lots of people will be getting their letters in the upcoming days!

Hey Everyone,

I can't believe it. I'm in. This is supposed to be the easiest decision of my life (UCSF or JMP are completely my first choice), but due to a personal emergency things have gotten much much more complicated. I don't know what's going to happen now, but hopefully I'll get to see y'all in the future.

Also, I've been living in SF for the past (almost) 2 years. If you have any questions about non-med school related stuff I'd be happy to help.

N/A

I think everybody knows Shemarty. We were joking about it at my Pitt interview back in Oct. You are such a celebrity!

Hello everyone!

I'm Joe and I'm from southern Illinois. I'm pretty excited about my UCSF acceptance, and will definitely be attending the second look weekend. I haven't made a decision about where I'll be attending school yet, but figure that the students I meet at second look and financial aid will be the biggest factors (in that order). I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone from SDN when I make my second trip ever to San Francisco this May!

Wow, so here it is...you never know, we may all end up knowing each other for the rest of our lives! And I am very excited about the possibility of getting to meet all of you at 2nd look weekend. Have you guys started filling out financial forms and looking into housing options yet?

CONGRATS TO ALL OF YOU!!!!

Haha, what'd you guys say about me? In retrospect, maybe I should've made some kind of effort to remain more anonymous. I just wanna meet my new classmates and stuff without being recognized [or judged] as "shemarty from SDN."

I haven't really looked into financial forms yet, but I guess it's about time to. I'll fill them out next week - my mail's still at my parents house.

As for housing, I think it'd be really awesome for a bunch of 1st years to rent a house together in Sunset. One of the cons of UCSF, in my personal opinion, is the lack of on campus housing. I feel like the students might end up very scattered and doing their own thing if they're not living near each other. Besides, its nice to come home to a group of friends who can sympathize with the stuff you're stressing out about because they're right there with you.

I'm only 1 year out of college and I really loved the dorm environment and living with/near my friends. So if I end up choosing UCSF, I'm going to be looking for fellow MS1 housemates 🙂

Don't worry. Nothing bad. We were just deploring our addiction to this site, and then we mentioned you.... Since you have a picture up, it is always easier for people to associate you with student doctor network. A picture is worth a thousand words

I don't judge you. 😀 Your secondary threads were very helpful, and anyone who wants to hate on that is not someone you'd want to be your friend anyway.

I actually picked a picture that was at an angle so I that I wouldn't be instantly recognizable, but apparently I am anyway.

Hmm, I guess we should wait 'til after May 15th before starting a Facebook group...

Yeah, facebook groups this early is in general a bad idea. No one is going to want to join several class of 2013 facebook groups.

Not necessarily. Most of us live within walking distance from campus and each other, and many (if not most) have classmates as housemates. The university housing has a waitlist, but if you are willing to move-in early (especially if you want to do research in the summer) you can get off it pretty quickly.

Can you explain more about how university housing works? I didn't even realize that was an option. When do you apply for that? 😕

Also does anybody have any comments about UCSF vs UCLA?

Wait. Can you come and move in early before school starts? Is there actually someone who comes early during the summer to do research? Just curious

There's that summer research fellowship with the $3200 stipend... I don't know many people do it, though.

There are people who apply for a paid summer research internship, I heard it's easy to get. After you've been accepted, you'll be asked if you want to be added to the university housing waitlist. There are some preference options (Mission Bay vs. Parnassus, single vs. two three four five...bedrooms, preferred roommates, etc.), you submit the form, and wait for them to call you when rooms become available. You also have to indicate when you expect to move in, and the earlier the move-in date the higher you'll be on the list.

UCSF!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In full disclosure, I know nothing about UCLA. However, I stand behind my answer of "UCSF!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Can I also mention how ridiculously excited I am to be posting in this thread?

Thanks for the info, shemarty and Ariodant. I probably will do it as a last resort.

Does anybody know the start date for the summer research thing? I wanted to go to China from June4th-July4th... is that too late in the summer to start the 8-wk research?

I think you can do it from July 4th to September 4th. The school doesn't start until early September so it should be fine, although I am not sure. I want to go to China too but life there is just too comfortable for me. I don't think I can endure the upcoming hardship of medical school if I stay there for too long.

Haha... I LOVE traveling in china. I have a regional Chinese accent when I speak mandarin, so storekeepers assume I'm from there don't try to rip me off...as badly. And everything is so inexpensive!! It's fantastic. I think this year we're gonna go to the Sichuan area... last year we went to Yunnan.

Do you know whether UCSF students have to pay tuition to do research during the summer between MS1 and MS2?

Stanford med students get a $12,000 stipend for the summer (med scholars) or something insane like that, but they're also paying a quarter's worth of tuition. $3200 seems so little in comparison, but I was wondering about the tuition issue...

No way, it is free money. Actually i am not so sure since I have never been in the California school system. At least i don't see research stipend in the budget breakdown given on the financial aid site

Sounds good, I guess I'll apply as soon as we get more info about it 🙂

No you dont pay tuition while you are not in school! the 3200 is for living costs. Most people choose to travel that summer though. Sublet your place and you can pay for your trip! Also dont move to Mission Bay, just rent a place around parnassus. you can find something on craigslist super easy and they LOVE UCSF med student!

Congrats on your acceptance and see you soon!

I too will be looking for MS1 housemates! 😀 Hope to make a decision about where I'm attending in the next couple of months...

Yea, I can't wait for May 16th 😀

Our thread is so quiet...

People should write more. Has anyone received any other mail from the school besides the acceptance letter?

yep, got another envelope with information for financial aid, immunization, state residency status, etc. All pretty standard requests. The only confusing thing is that they ask you to have some of the documents mailed in within 2 weeks of "provisional acceptance." If the acceptance letter was considered the provisional acceptance, then it has been long past 2 weeks...

Let me know if you guys have questions regarding any goodies that I received in particular

I wanna know more about the summer research thing.

I also need to make more exciting summer plans... it's our last free summer for awhile!

Any ideas?

You can work as a medical sales representative for Bayer or Astrazeneca in their Beijing office, if you speak some manderin and have sales experience

My vocabulary's about the level of a 10 year old at best. My accent, though, is spot-on. Chinese people can't tell that I'm from the US. They just think that I'm a REALLY STUPID native Chinese person, since I don't seem to know how to say anything advanced. 👎

Thread....?

Are you alive?

Are you alive?

This thread is too silent, so I guess I will contribute something. I just ran into this thread from class of 2009 http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=177482&page=3. It is kind of old but have some discussions about housing and financial aid. It seems to me that people don't get finaid estimate until late April? That is kind of late.
SheMarty - i think your chinese is like my english, except that i write ok. if i ever meet you, i will keep talking to you in chinese so that i have an advantage😀

I hope the next batch of acceptances comes soon...

Has anyone signed up for accepted students weekend? Does anyone have any idea what to expect for it?

I'm coming! For anyone that lives out of driving distance, flights are really cheap right now. I got boston-SF non-stop for $250 round trip.

I'm so excited to meet people in May 🙂

WHAAASSAAAAAAAP?!?!

sorry, still really giddy...

Has anyone signed up for accepted students weekend? Does anyone have any idea what to expect for it?

I'll definitely be there! Not sure what to expect, but I'm looking forward to it! 🙂

Hey everyone! I totally can't believe I'm posting in this forum. YAY!! 😀 I'll be there May 1-3. I'm super excited to meet you all! I live in SF, too. Nevadanteater, where are/were you in SF? I'm near Mission Bay (Potrero Hill).

hey, i had a question for everyone...

im quickly realizing that trying to attending these revisits are going cost me a whole other arm and leg (i thought i was done bleeding money after the interviews, apparently not). esp since they are all on different weekends, so its not like you can buy a multicity fare and get em all done at once. you guys have any ideas for how to deal with this?

It's great you have multiple 2nd look weekends to go to! 🙂
Will any of your MD/PhD programs help you pay for the flights or lodging?
The UCSF packet says something about helping pay for flights if it'd cause a financial hardship for you to attend. Perhaps your other schools offer financial assistance...?

Hmmm. If it were me, I'd only go to those revisits that I knew would help me get a better feel for the school. (I know, duh, right? 😳) For example: if I had only been to Baltimore once and didn't know much about Hopkins and this revisit would be my only chance to visit Baltimore before I matriculated, whereas maybe I'd been to SF many times and had a good feeling for the city and UCSF, then I'd go to the Hopkins revisit. And, of course, if there was a school at which you interviewed that you honestly didn't like much, then don't bother going to that revisit weekend...

There's also the idea of making your own "revisit itinerary": plan a trip where you can hit all the schools in one fell swoop. You don't have to visit a school during its official weekend: you can visit it whenever you wish. You'll miss the special programs of the official weekend, but at least you can speak with faculty and students, sit in on classes, tour the city, etc. Pick the one school whose official weekend you'd like to attend, and then visit the other schools the days surrounding that weekend.

Other than advising you to stay with students and look for cheap airfares, I'm not sure what else to say. Good luck making your decisions!

Go to china.

Don't research.

Enjoy this time.
