UCSF Fresno

This question is old, but I'll take the time to answer it because it's still relevant.

I looked at all the California programs before applying, and am pretty familiar with most of them. I think UCSF/Fresno offers the best training opportunity in psychotherapy in California. This is based on the actual time devoted to learning and practicing psychotherapy. For people with a specific narrow interest, such as neuroimaging research for a particular illnesses or laboratory research, some of the other programs in California may be more desirable. However, for a general psychiatry training, UCSF/Fresno is a very good choice.

I only interviewed at CA programs. I would argue it depends on the type of psychotherapy. In terms of psychodynamic psychotherapy, obviously CPMC is where you probably want to go. Davis probably has the edge over Fresno there as well. UCI is actually quite strong in psychotherapy (in terms of number of supervisors, types of therapies, opportunities), but I don't think they do the best job of conveying that. In general, CA programs are very biologically oriented.

To be fair, I did not interview at Fresno. I would not say it is necessarily the best CA program for psychotherapy training. If you were to rate Fresno as the best program in terms of underserved or 'rural' psych in CA, then I would probably agree.

I'm still a MS3 but I'm from Fresno so I thought I'd contribute. This is what I've heard- not sure of the accuracy. I don't think it's as competitive as the other UCs (except Kern). It's a less desirable location. People tend to dislike Fresno. The surrounding area is farmland. There isn't much exciting stuff to do (compared to la, sf, sd). On the other hand, I believe they only take 4 residents per year so that may make them more competitve since it's a small program. Not sure the details of their training as other people have mentioned (because I obviously haven't interviewed yet).
