is there anyone else on the UCSF high priority category? at first I thought it was a waitlist, but then i realized that it's just a letter saying they didn't make a decision about me yet, so i was just curious to if there are fellow sdners who've gotten this in the mail.

also, are they making final decisions only after may 15th?

psh i just got that 20 min ago, snail mail, i interviewed oct. 27 i think.
i am soooooooooo upset. all it says is "we're leaving you hanging till may 15th"
thanks ucsf....appreciate it. 🙁 i thought my dad was kidding when he said ucsf!! im like, no they dont send anything till the 15th....he's like no it says ucsf and it's a small envelope.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh i am sooooooooooooooooooooooo bummed.

Hang in there guys.

i got the same letter today too. i'm not sure what to think. does it mean we are on the waitlist? should i hold out hope or are they just dragging me along so they can send me a rejection in may?? arg, i'm so tired of waiting...

i just called my friend who got it last year. it's pretty much a waitlist, except for the fact that you can still get rejected from it? i think it's comparable to the acceptable pool at UCSD. why all these fancy names? how about they just put us on "the list of people that we would like to keep waiting, because it humors us when they suffer" instead. all the same thing, really.

yea, i feel bad too.

Sooooooooooooooooooo jealous of you guys. 🙁 GOOD LUCK!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! DAMMIT!
I got the same letter today. That bums me a lot! I wonder whether there are others from last month (Jan acceptances) who got this same message? Why do they find joy in making these weird lists?! I'd rather hear something definitive--seriously, if it's a waitlist, just CALL it that! Obviously, if we got the letter, we weren't good enough to be accepted this round...

Man, but what was I thinking?! UCSF??? I should wake up...
😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 👎

Do you all live on the West coast? Did you all interview early (Oct/Nov)? UCSF makes me so much more nervous than any other school!!

did anyone getting this letter interview in january?

anyone interview in December and got this letter???? :scared:

i interviewed in october and i live in california.
you guys, seriously i can't wait anymore!! I need to figure out where I'm going, what I'm doing in a few months, where i'm moving to!! WHY DO THEY DO THIS TO US! :'(

it didnt seem like a waitlist b/c doesn't the letter say something like, "after may 15th, you'll either be accepted, rejected, or put on the alternate list". I think I read that. so basically, we're in no man's land. UGHHHHHHH! 🙁
is this better than a waitlist?? i mean in the end, we're porbably going to wait just as long as the waitlist.

one more question, is there a waitlist forming at this point? or do they form the waitlist after they've accepted people and put the rest in the high priority group.

and if im so high priority, why do i not know what's going on with my file?
i just wanna cry 🙁

hi everyone,
i am a 4th year ucsf med student - don't worry too much if you are "high priority" - i think typically at least a handful of people regularly get in soon after may 15 or whenever the deadline is (sorry im a little out of the loop re: schedule for applicants). I was high priority @ ucsf, got in very soon (ie a few days) after the deadline. if you are high on the high priority list, you will very likely get in as soon as the folks who are offered acceptances decline at the deadline. if you are high on the list this should happen very soon after may 15. one note: they will not tell you exactly where you are on the list, they may tell you in general terms (ie upper half, etc) so you still have to wait, which is tough. but if you are high enough (ie within range of the number of acceptees who decline) you will get in. hope this helps. its like that old tom petty song "the waiting is the hardest part..." 🙂 👍

thanks brohemus, that's actually kinda reassuring. but when should we ask about where we are on the list? they said they would rank us in spring so... march, or is that too soon?

i'd say you could ask them now when they can tell you where you are on the list. i think they will be able to tell you this - they know the stress this process involves and will try to offer whatever useful info they can, within reaon. i'd mention that you understand that they cannot give you a specific ranking, only a general "top half, bottom half" type of answer, so you dont annoy them unecessarily/inadvertenly. i'll bet they will be willing to tell you when they will have a reasonable answer to this question. my guess is that they already have a rough idea since i'd bet that the high priority list is an "ongoing work in progress" but they probably wont/cant tell you anything useful until a bit after the last interviews are done (otherwise, they will not yet have all the info they need to answer your question). again, sorry i dont rember the exact dates/chronology for this process. also note that if you are in the top few folks on the high p. list, you are essentially guarenteed to get in, b/c there will almost definitely be acceptees who decline. if you are bottom half, probably your chances are not so good....the bummer is that your fate unfortunately now depends on others declining ucsf - i know a ucsf student who got offered a ucsf spot in august. this is probably not the norm. hang in there! hope this helps.

thank you so much for the info!!

same here! i'm actually looking forward to may 15th now. if only it wasn't 3 months away 😛

uhh ohhhhh, i am dreading mail day tomorrow...i have a feeling i will be getting one of these letters too!

tracksuits! yay! ur back!! i was wondering where you were! I was just going to PM you with the upsetting, yet hopeful, news lol.
I hope you DONT get the letter tomorrow!! you're going to get an acceptance!!

so i'm not sure what to do anymore! ahhh may 15th...lol, seriously I dont want to have to wait so long, I just wanna know! If I dont hear anything by April, I'm going to start planning my move to Wisconsin (unless a miracle happens)...this sucks.

by the way, is everyone on the high priority list if they're not accepted? or are they actually rejecting people and putting them on waitlists...

or are we the people that will eventually become the waitlist. This is all so confusing!!

TRACKSUITS good luck!!!!!!!!! kirexhana, im glad im not alone! we'll hang in there together!!

Hey coco! I was so sad to see your name replying to this list. I know how much we have both been looking forward to this week. However, I have several friends who were on high priority at UCSF in past years and all of them were accepted come May. They actually chose to go to other schools - probably for reasons like yours, had already moved, etc. - but there are SO many people who get off high priority. It really is called HIGH priority for a reason. So I really have a feeling you will get off! I just hope you are able to wait until then to move :-( I will update you tomorrow when I check the mail...of course if I dont get it tomorrow, I will still be nervous that I will get it Tuesday...it's times like this I wish I lived in the Bay area....thanks for the encouraging words and I will talk to you soon! DON'T BE DOWN ON YOURSELF ok????

coco, don't forget me! i'm in this with you guys... 🙂 BTW, where in Wisconsin will you be going if not to SF? I might end up in Wisconsin, too! 😛

Discus!! of course i didnt forget about you!! you're part of this elite group of students! we're the high priority group! woot woot! haha...but anyway, I could not agree with your first post more!!! seriously! oh and i'm accepted to MCW...in milwaukee, what about you??

tracksuits! good to hear from you again! thanks for the info about the list! hopefully i'll be able to call them around the end of march and find out where I am on the list. If i'm somewhere around the top, I'll stay put. UCSF is still definitely my top choice!! I want to go there SOOO badly! what part of the US do you live in tracksuits?

k im gonna go to bed, keep us all updated! i'm with you guys!! let's keep our hopes up!! 😍

i called sf today and asked if there was a more specific date that i could know if i'm high or low on the list. they said that they don't want us to call to ask about anything regarding the waitlist and that if anything happens, they'll be the one to contact us. bummed 🙁

r u kidding me!!! what the heck! you guys seriously, this is sooo freakin unfair! there should be some pre-med protection laws. we do everything we're supposed to! we pay, we write essays, we interview, we wait and wait and wait....and now they say we can't call??
im so mad.

if it makes you feel any better, they were nice about it... but yea... 😳

haha thanks! and thanks for calling btw! saved us all a call 🙂

Yea, thanx for calling kirexhana. I was going to call tomorrow if no one did... but sheesh, I guess they want to be left alone!!!

Coco, yes, I might end up in MCW as well if SF doesn't want me... 🙁 Not that MCW is bad, but you know...

You can add me to the list:

Interview: 11/17
Resident: NC
"High Priority" Letter: 2/13

I can't complain too much...out of state is long shot...lucky to get an interview.

I'm now a member of this illustrious club too. Oh boy! UCSF is my top choice, so this is sad. Good luck everyone ...

Letter recieved 2/14. Happy Valentine's Day.

I'm a member too! yeah high priority! 😎

Good luck to all you "high priority" folks. It really, really sucks to have to wait 3 more months, but it's not over yet! Hang in there.

p.s. I'm still on the mailbox watch. On the bright side -- even if we don't get into UCSF, we still get to be doctors. 🙂

I thought the adcom meets 15th of every month...how can they send out these letters now?? unless they decided last month and for some reason, took a while to send it out later than the acceptances...anyone know?? I have yet to hear back from them

I got a UCSF High Priority Letter today. I think it's annoying that they don't tell us until after deposits become non-refundable.

Maybe 'acceptances' go out on the 15th, but the 'holds' go out before/after??? Hmmm... this "High Priority" aka "HOLD" thing is really annoying. 😡

man, i just read this thread now...was wondering where everyone went since it's the 15th. well, just to add my $.02, i also know people who are at ucsf that were on this high priority thingie before too.

am just realizing i haven't really checked my mail in the last couple days. i wonder if this envelope is sitting in my mailbox already.

well, would waaay rather have one these letters than a rejection. congrats to you guys (in an odd sorta way, i guess). congrats on being still standing 🙂

Well, it has been a month. Has anyone heard anything more or new about "high priority". Did they send these out in March as well? Any new info as to what this means? Thanks

I live in San Francisco and recieved a high priority letter in the mail yesterday. Don't know anything more about it than what's already been said in this thread.

Interview: 10/25/2005
"High Priority": 2/8/2006 (letter date)
Letter receipt: 2/11/2006
Received in: So Cal.

Been waiting ... ever since. 🙁

FINALLY, got mine today!

It's nice to have "closure" that isn't really closure... at least it's something. Thanks for sending me mail, UCSF!

add me to the list.

interview 1/9, letter dated 3/28, received 3/30

I already posted this on the other UCSF thread, but... yeah, me too. Interview 11/29 (!), high priority letter received 3/27 (dated 3/23).

Me too! Got it yesterday.

I posted this on 3/25 in the UCSF...I'm in...page

Well, I got the letter today... I'm on the high priority boat... and I have a sinking feeling

Has anyone been rejected post-interview??????

if we look at the us news stats... 532 interviewed, 248 accepted, 141 enrolled.... so 248-141=107 (people off of the waiting list that get accepted)
So, lets say that they have 141 people now... 532-141=391 (of us left in high priority limbo). 107/391x100=27%... the letter said that between 20-30% get in off of the "high priority" list.... everyone interviewed (and not yet accepted) are high priority.... :wow: 😱

SOOOOOOOO, what do you guys think.... I haven't heard of anyone being rejected post-interview.... someone said they had... but do any of you know anyone (for-sure)?

Hello All...I'm new to SDN, but just wanted to give my fellow "High Priority" peeps some hope! I interviewed at UCSF early Dec, got the "High Priority" letter early Feb, and received an acceptance packet about two weeks ago. No, I didn't write a LOI to them but I did send two additional letters of rec in late Feb. which I believe may have prompted a re-review of my file. So hang in there since it does look like they're already plucking people from the list!!!

I'm not sure if these stats are 100% accurate. I know that they include the JMP students also (12 spots out of the 141, and I have heard that they interview around 60ish)...

Lusito, I think you are right. Remember, the high priority letter isn't really a waitlist, it is just a place to put you until May when they decide if you are 1. accepted, 2. waitlisted or 3. "unable to offer you a spot". I didn't know the numbers before, but it certainly does look that the high priority letter will be sent to everyone granted an interview but not yet granted an acceptance. It is a little depressing, but it is best to look at it realistically as I am now doing thanks to your number crunching. On the bright side, I have been accepted to UCLA and there are some advantages for me to go there over UCSF (which is still my first choice.)

Same interview day as me...and I got my "high priority" letter last weekend. I actually will be up in the SF area next week, maybe I'll stop by and do some face-to-face begging. I'm kidding, if its meant to be then it will happen.

Did some number-crunching of my own. I'm using MDapplicants as my data source, so remember that this is going to skew high.

Those who interviewed at UCSF this year: 64 profiles, avg. MCAT 34.5, avg. GPA 3.75.

Of the 56 regular MD applicants:

3 post-interview rejections
18 "high-priority" peeps
9 acceptances
26 "awaiting decision" (includes some profiles that don't look like they've been updated in a while and many late (Feb/Mar) interviews)

I don't see any reason why someone would lie about being rejected, so I think we can take those as factual and see that post-interview rejections are happening. But I do think we can conclude that the high-priority group isn't exactly exclusive.
