Does anyone know if UCSF offers any merit based aid? If so, does it come with the acceptance offer? I got a full ride at another med school and it's painful to give up, so I'm wondering if there's any chance of getting any money from UCSF based on merit.

Yes, they do... not too sure about full-rides though. Two years ago my buddy received ~$25,000 based on merit. He had 36S with 3.9+ He was offered it a couple of weeks after the acceptance.

Do you know if that was $25000 per year or $25000 over four years? (Or, I guess, $25000 the first year with $0 afterwards.) I think $25000 per year would be pretty close to a full tuition scholarship.

I would like to dispute that. At my interview there, I specifically asked this question to both the Dean of Admissions and the Financial Aid person. They both said that UCSF had NO merit based money. The only money they have is need-based, with the exception of 5 UC Regents Scholarships, which are definitely not $25000 per year.

Perhaps the UC Regents Scholarship is ~$6000/year, and that is what howdy2u is talking about...

That's a good point. That might be fairly accurate actually. Because I remember that the UC Regent Scholarships are supposed to be around $5000.

I know you asked a specific question but my advice is to take the full ride. Not having any debt after school is a bit weight off the shoulders. If you'd be miserable going to the other school then I guess go to UCSF.

my bad...Sorry about the confusion. Yes, you're right about no merit based aid...it was the scholarship which comes out to $20,000-25,000 for the total time there (not per year).
