Hey guys,
I got into UCSF and U Penn until I hear from other school I must make a deposit to either school. What are your toughts on these schools in terms of level of difficulty, curriculum, location, school reputation, etc...I really need your opinions so anything would realy help.

hey bubblicious

both are good schools and you can't go wrong with either one. granted, if you want to specialize, Penn is definitely a school that caters you in that direction. Both do you have great matching rates. Difficulty level? Well all dent schools are hard in their own right I'm sure. After all, they're all accredited so why wouldn't they give you the same caliber education? It probably boils down to whether or not you want to live in SF or Philly. Philly is cheaper to live in than SF, but if you've been a west coast person most of your life, there will be some cultural shock living in the east coast (at least for a while). If you feel the need for more time, just put down deposits for both and think through your decision carefully. I don't remember about Penn but UCSF gives you a refund on your deposit if you tell them by a certain date.

Good luck with your decision.

Both sch will prepare you well for specialty.
UCSF has P/NP system, so it might be less competitive.
I think UCSF is a bit stronger clinically and they are definitely the richest research dental sch out there. If you want to do research, go to UCSF.

If you want to practice in NorCal, it is probably easier to connect with other local dentists.

How much is Penn's deposit?
Yes, you can refund ur ucsf deposit before the summer. They will mail you back $190(10 dollar adminstritive fee)

i was considering penn and ucsf as well, but i'm not a california resident. penn is letter grades, ucsf is p/f. i heard penn inflates the grades, but for me, letter grades would have made it more stressful. my interviewer at ucsf said things are really laid back with the new p/f system-- i was still concerned tho, because they had only recently redid the curriculum (1 or 2 years ago) and i didn't want to play guinea pig while they worked out the kinks.

i didn't get to meet any faculty when i was at ucsf so that was weird. at penn, the faculty members were all so nice and students there keep telling me how supportive the school is.

so there are pluses and minuses to each school. for me, it comes down to money. the penn campus and facilities are beautiful but you sure pay for it. i think i'd choose ucsf if you didn't get penn's dean scholarship. if you did get the scholarship, try something new and go to penn. 😀

i was trying to decide b/n those two schools and columbia. in the end, i decided to go to nyc. it's your call-- they're both great schools. i sympathize, it's not an easy decision. good luck!
