From what i hear its only for urms. They accept like 15 people i year i think. If you get into the post bacc program your pretty much in ucsf, aslong as you do well.

I've heard otherwise actually. The program is a standard post-bacc program like at any other UC. The only post-bacc programs that I know which get you into a specific med school is that Mills College, and Scripps.

I know for a fact that the UCSF program is aimed towards people with disadvantaged backgrounds or be from an underserved community as defined by AAMC, so you are correct that its more for URMs. Pretty much from their website.

Since UCSF does not have any facilities for undergrad classes, all the GPA enhancing classes are taken at Cal State SF. I find it hard to believe that doing well, and attending UCSF's post-bacc program pretty much gets you into the school. Otherwise everyone would be trying to go this route in order to get into what is essentially the best med school in CA.

I apparently qualify for the program, however decided to not go this route and just take classes through UC Extension despite the cost. I found the open campus program to be more flexible. Plus the other courses that post-bacc programs have you take such as study-skills, etc wasn't my cup of tea, since my low GPA was due to working not, study habits..haha. Whatever works best for the person though.

What schools do scripps and mills have linkages with?

From what i heard ucsf only take about 15 people a year into their post bacc. Out of those 15 people some are pre-dent others are pre-med. If you do well in the program your pretty much guaranteed admission. Again its only for URMS and disadvantaged people so that limits the number of people that could apply. I heard this from a person who did the program and is planning to start dental school at ucsf next year.

I went through this program and it was a great help. Yes it is for URMs or people from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. The pre-med and pre-dental programs are two distinct programs and you do not interact with each other. I cannot say how many people the pre-dental program takes, but the pre-med takes 10-15. The pre-med post-bac does have an excellent record of getting people into medical school, but it does not automatically qualify you for an interview at UCSF. Overall the program has a 96% acceptance rate, but it does not guarantee you admissions to any school.
If you qualify for this program I think it is an excellent opportunity and it is not for people that had low gpas because they do not know how to study and SFSU is a great school for a great price.

I went through the UCSF Post-Bacc program a couple of years ago. I can easily overstate or understate my experiences with it so if you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me. 🙂

I believe Mills links with Tulane, and Scripps with George Washington or something (check this one).

Which post baccs are these? Are you talking about the year long post bacc for non science majors or people who havent taken the prereqs?

I believe these are for career changers. Go to AAMC and check out their descriptions for more details. Here's what I found:

Scripps:
"Linkage Agreement: All affiliations involve conditional acceptance to medical school the fall subsequent to completion of the Scripps Program. Conditional Acceptance is based upon the individual's academic performance in the program and performance on the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) -- University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Drexel University School of Medicine, George Washington School of Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine, Western University School of Medicine, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific"

Mills
"Linkage Agreements: Tulane University Medical School and Western University of Osteopathic Medicine "

So yea, cool that they can link you into a school, but at the same time, from the sound of their websites, its still pretty hard to get into these programs 😉

NorCalGirl, I am about to start the UCSF post-bacc program in about 3 weeks, do you have any tips?, suggestions?, comments? something you wished you knew when you were in the program?. Thanks that information will be very helpful

Also, did you apply to medical school while in the program? or after it was over?

Thanks!

I'm going to be starting the program this summer, What second bachelor should I applied for ??? I was looking at their degree BS in Physiology but I've taken at least 25% of the required class. Is this considered acceptable ?

And what about housing during the year ??

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hello NorCalGirl. I tried pm-ing you, but that is not an option. Do you have another form of contact. I am interested in your experience at the UCSF Postbac and I have some questions that is a bit personal and I dont feel comfortable posting in a public forum. If you can help...I thank you veyr much.

For those who enter into the UCSF postbac. Do students normally apply to medical school during the summer of entering into the postbac program or during the summer of completing the postbac program?

It came up in my interview but I think it's decided on an individual basis. You should talk to the admin for a counseling session, maybe they can help you decide.

sorry to revive this old thread, but has anyone else gone through this program and would liek to hare their experiences? im interested in this program.
