So I noticed UCSF's only asks for what you've been doing during your gap year and gives room for an activities update. How do they differentiate between applicants, given that the secondary is so short? I'm guessing they must heavily weigh the PS and letters of rec?

Probably through the other ~20 essays included in the primary application, letters, stats, +/- 20-sided dice 😉 .

Speaking of short secondaries, I don't understand why some people get mad about short secondaries. I have read multiple posts from people saying "Can't believe they're charging a $100 supplemental fee for a couple of checkboxes" as if the fee goes to the person who reads the secondary essays...........

Oh I have no problem with short secondaries. Was just curious about how they'd filter through apps if you can't really distinguish yourself in the secondary

Oh I know! My reply wasn't directed towards you. It was directed towards the non-insignificant number of people who hold that opinion.
