I'm thinking of specializing in, well, something (going to shadow a bunch of specialists my final undergrad semester just for the hell of it) but just wanted to hear from any current UCSF students or anyone in the know, how many Ortho/OMFS/Endo applicants matched last year out of those that applied? Thanks!

at my interview, i was told this figure.
85 plus 20 international students in total,

5 into ortho,
3 into endo,
1 into os,
1 into ped.

It seems the reason of low specialty matching is due to low incentive in applying. Most people just wanna do general from ucsf. Come to think of it, it wouldn't even matter where you go to dental school if you wanna do general.

Did you happen to catch the numbers that applied to each... 5 ortho/___ applicants, 3 endo/___ applicants etc.?

i would have if they release that.
Per UCSF's reputation, im guess it's close to 100% matching. Just guessing, don't beat me.

Per previous (2005) stats, it's actually 2 OMFS, and 2/2.

UCSF will be very interesting to watch this year (2006), given that there are at least 6 OMFS applicants, and over 10 pediatric dentistry applicants. We'll know their fates soon.

There was one perio applicant, matched months ago. One endo applicant, matched months ago.

S:

No matching involved in Perio and Endo EVER! They were accepted.

So now that the big day has come and gone, any word on how the UCSF applicants did?

Stanford Fencer posted in another thread that he knew of 5 OMS matches. 2=UCSF, 1=Harvard, 1=OHSU, 1=LLU

one more OMFS from the class of 06 to highland hospital (oakland).

stargirl is correct, one of the 2 omfs admits to UCSF is from the class of 05 (UCSF).

2 years in a row that UCSF has enjoyed a 100% match for OMFS.

jesus, why just one perio, one endo? are those residencies that undesireable??

This the 4th highest board scores in the nation. I thought UCSF would have more specialists.

True, many others have high board scores in the class. But a high score doesn't mean you HAVE to specialize... there simply wasn't a desire for many to go into perio and endo this year (or other specialties), eventhough many of my classmates could have if they wanted to. Our match rates were really good this year:

OMFS: 5/5 (the 6th person was from the class of 2005)
Perio: 1/1
Endo: 1/1
Ortho: 5/6
Pedo: 13/16 (not 100% sure on this figure...)
GPR/AEGD: Too many to count. But I believe everyone who applied to one matched somewhere, MOST at their #1 choice

All in all, I think the class did very well 🙂

Thats over 30% of the class. Dont you hear on SDN that you need to be top 10% to specialize. It appears not so at UCSF.

And the class that scored 4th highest on boards was not the class that just finished match (2006). That's the class of 2007.

One can match without being top 10% of the class in a handful of dental schools around the nation. UCLA, Harvard, and Columbia quickly come to mind. I'm sure there are others.
