UCSF students

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oh sorry I was gone...I had some patients to see. You know, that thing you'll do for your first time right around the time I graduate.

I do like the way you paint UCSF as the ultimate school for slackers though. Definitely informs the reason all my patients who have gotten treatment at SF say they'd never go there again

Seeing patients when? During the mid afternoons when you're in lecture, right before clinical at night? Need I remind you that it's not quite considered "seeing patients" when you get a glimpse of a few as you walk to lecture.

Can't we all just get along and bash USC or something instead? :hardy:

Nah. I can't bash on USC. I admire them very much for many reasons. Among them, their female dental students have what every male dental students want to see....a perfect set of....choppers.

All joking aside, I think UoP students are undertaking an admirable task. They're trying to complete the dental curriculum in 3 years, because it's a more favorable "capitalization" of student loans. And to achieve that end, they're willing to live a lifestyle of going to class before dawn and leaving class at the stroke of midnight. The entire day's spent in the school, and they only really know San Francisco nightlife. Well to my UoP peers, I present to you all a gift...

This is to remind you what the daylight in San Francisco is like... It's beautiful, ain't it? You guys only get to see the daylight a few times in the year... scattered weekends, major national holidays, and that mandatory fire alarm test that forces you out of the building at 2PM.

Well, I'm glad this has turned into a UoP/UCSF snarkfest since I'm interested in both schools and would love to be in the enviable position of having to choose between the two.

I actually turned in the supplemental app the day after I originally posted (or later the same day depending on how you look at it), and actually managed to finish an entire hour early.

Let's not bash USC, I went to undergrad there. 😀

At this point, I realized that it's pretty much useless having a top choice without going to any of the schools and visiting and talking to people and seeing how you like everything.

What I was wondering about was that you hear about a lot of schools that I think are good schools and people insist that their graduates don't have good clinical skills. Is it true that UCSF has a reputation for graduates less adept at clinical stuff or is that just smack talk because of all research/specialization? I heard the same thing about UPenn where someone insisted that Temple grads had better clinical skills, and again I'm wondering the same thing.

And is it true that at UoP you end up seeing more advanced cases than you probably would at other schools since there's no specialty residents to compete with for the interesting cases? And how big of an advantage do you think that is, either for general practice or for a specialty program, if that's what you plan on doing?

And last random note: I fluctuate between being totally calm about getting into dental school, confident that I have the stats as well as the intangibles to at least have a decent shot at my top choices, and being a total wreck, nervous about the lack of a response (took the DAT August 4th so even though I submitted ADSAAS beginning of June, application was a bit late being completed), and wondering why I didn't apply to more schools even the ones in Nebraska and Tennessee (aka the ones I have zero interest in, no offense to anyone from aforementioned states or attending school there). So basically, congratulations to you guys for being done with all of that, and being at a school that you like. So even though you have a lot of work to do and are stressed about other things, bask in the self-satisfied glow of knowing that a pre-dent would kill to switch places with you. 🙂

I won't spoil the fun and tell you what our beaches have. Yes, OUR beaches. We both have the same beaches, the beaches you guys havn't seen because you're in class til 5am.

Are you from the midwest or something? San Francisco is not in southern California. Especially this time of year, the beach is super foggy and cold. There isn't even any surf except in the early mornings because it gets all blown out. You go right ahead and go to the beach - I'd rather be kicking back in a heated library.

What're you talking about? I was just in Santa Cruz the other day; it was sunny and warm on the beach. For the city of SF itself, the summer overcast is about to end, so we'll be having sunny beaches for the next few months probably. Baker and Ocean get decently crowded in the fall.

I go there a lot. I know what it's like.

There are surfers there every afternoon. The currents look pretty strong, actually. The sun was out at full force today.

There are always a few surfers in every class. They manage to surf a few times a week and then still got into ortho & omfs

Would people mind posting pros and cons for each UoP and UCSF? Though it won't be for 2 or 3 years (apparently high school AP scores in basic sciences don't please admissions people, so I have to re-take most of the basic requirements), I plan on moving to SF next fall and want to attend one of these schools.

Loving the "debate," keep it up!

So both of the people that got into ortho and OMFS were surfers?

Why do you go to the beach if you don't even surf - especially OB it is like the dirtest beach in the state. You should go to Dolores park and drink beer or something.

You must go to Pacific.

Dolores has tennis courts without windscreens. Ever tried hitting a topspin shot just to have the ball slice way wide by the wind? People use Dolores as a dog park. Fresh poo to step and sit on.
