Volunteers wanted by psychiatric neuroimaging laboratory (located in the San Francisco VA Medical Center; Clement Street @ 42nd Avenue) to help with data processing and subject recruitment for research studies involving major depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. These positions are ideally suited to people who are planning to pursue (or at least considering) careers in mental health and/or clinical research. Volunteers should be independently motivated and have good computer skills. Knowledge of MRI techniques and neuroanatomy is ideal, however training is available. This is an outstanding research opportunity, and depending on individual interests it could also involve presenting lab findings at academic conferences, writing a first-authored academic journal article, and/or learning how to perform MRI scans for research.

Specifically, we need help with the following projects:
(1) Manually outlining the hippocampus on MR images: The volunteer for this project must be able to devote about 15 hours/week for at least one year. The hours are flexible and there is the potential to work from home, however ideally you should be available to come to the VA Wednesday and/or Thursday afternoons during the training period;
(2) Recruiting research subjects (including prescreening subjects by phone): The volunteers for this project must be able to devote 5-10 hours/week for at least one year. Ideally, you should be able to come to the VA Friday afternoons during the training period (more flexibility after that);
(3) Miscellaneous: We also need help with smaller, less exciting tasks (cutting & pasting data from one spreadsheet to another; posting recruitment fliers; etc.) that require less of a time commitment.

Please e-mail a letter of interest and your qualifications (resume) to [email protected]. Thanks!
