I got a rude letter from them saying "Canadians Suck"

so no...

I am wondering the same thing

Interviewed Nov. No reply yet.

I'm getting anxious.

I just got a phone call from Dr. Alexander, the dean of the d-school, congratulating me on my acceptance. Apparently they met today (1/24) and just got out, because it is 7 PM here on the East Coast.

So that makes me one of the 2 out-of-staters they take, but I am pretty convinced I am going to UNC (already paid a deposit). I have even been emailing Dr. DenBesten, Dr. Peter Lee, Dr. Richard Smith, and Dr. Dorothy Pang and they all have suggested UNC over UCSF anyway. Even though the weather is great, they all think UNC is the better choice.

So I hope someone enjoys the spot that I am going to make open. Congrats if you get into UCSF. Have fun in San Fran.

Kim

(I don't really check this, so if you need to reach me: [email protected]).

Oh yeah, I interviewed Dec. 16 at UCSF.

They only accept 2 out of staters?? Craziness.
who are those drs anyways? what are their reasons for unc over ucsf?
congrats still (even though u're gonna deny the acceptance)

I have my interview this Monday (1/27/03).

Although I've made a deposit to UOP, I still want to give UCSF a chance. Being called for an interview to California schools are such a rare thing. 🙂

From what I've heard and have been told, UCSF is a great school. They really strive for diversity (not necessarily racial, but rather a rich personal background and history). My friend who recently interviewed there however mentioned that the school is really disorganized. Probably why many of you have yet to hear any word from them. 🙁

In any case, I am looking forward to seeing for myself. No pressure.....my last official interview! Good luck to everyone.

yea, good luck on u'r interview agutier3~

Hey thanks blaitini!

Oh and by the way, for those of you who are still waiting......my friend (who I mentioned in a previous post) interviewed just last Monday (1/20/03), and has heard yesterday (1/24/03) by phone that he was accepted to UCSF.

Maybe they are not as disorganized as I thought. This might be helpful to those who must make a quick decision on waiting for UCSF or putting a deposit down on another school. Good luck!

Not to start any "my school is better than yours" fights, for those of you who were curious about the advice I got from UCSF profs, I emailed profs who had gotten their degrees from UNC and asked them to compare the schools and the success of their grads. Here is what some had to say:

I didn't put their names in case anyone would turn them into UCSF for giving this advice. If you really want to know, email me.

A orthodontics prof: My choice would be UNC. The DDS program is excellent and so is their pediatric dentistry specialty. You will be well trained after your basic DDS and should not have any problems getting into any specialty program of your choice later especially if you do well.

A pediatrics prof: To put it succinctly, between UCSF and UNC, UNC is a superior dental school overall. I don't know much about the DDS program in Columbia but I have not been impressed with the clinical skills of the graduates I have encountered from there so far. Anyone can score well in the National Board Examination.
Overall, North Carolina has the best residency program in Pediatric Dentistry. I have many reasons to support that claim but I don't want to go into the details here. Suffice to say, UCSF pales by comparison. I love what I do and when I look back I am so glad that I received my pediatric dental training in North Carolina. Like you I wanted to live and study in SF but one of the best decisions I have made for my career is not
to study but live in SF.

Many people outside of NC don't know how good our dental school is. I guess that's because it is a state school and most of the students come from NC. I got into Columbia, Penn, UCSF, and UNC, and I think I have made the best choice for me, educationally and financially.

I interviewed in the morning, and in the evening Dr. Alexander gave me my acceptance letter. I was just shocked and speechless. I didn't believe they work that fast. I guess that they enjoyed surprising their future student, in a magnitude of a 9.999 earthquake shock or something like that. They even joked about my Hummer in the Temple thread.

wow, that's awesome tinker bell~ congratulations~

mind telling me u'r stats?

Thanks, my DAT is in the 98% range
However, I think what get me into ucsf is my research experience with 2 papers published and I also own a patent in neuronal development technique
Eventhough I turned in my application real late (9/23) and my aadsas application didn't get to the school until halloween, I made an effort to turn in my secondary on Nov 1st.
I also turned in all of my transcripts very quick, most important the Fall 02 transcript and follow my application very closely. So, they know that I care about my application.
Tinker Bell-TEMPLE DENTAL 007😎

So Tink,
I'm confused. Are you still Tinker Bell Temple Dental 2007?

ground hog,

I'm confused myself as well. I am trying to make my decision in the next week or two. But now, since I still like driving the hummer very much, I prefer to be temple 007

Tinker Bell-TEMPLE DENTAL 007😎

Well, spread the magic dust where ever you go. Good luck.

Hehe, groundhog,
my pixie dust seems to work very well this year.

Tinker Bell-TEMPLE DENTAL 007😎

yeah groundhog,

me and tinker bell are gonna be selling some angel dust in our armor Hummer in Philly. Tink loves to be bad and philly is where she wants to be. Cash money, in our well equipped H2, drinking some H20, and escaping the five-0.

Yeah you know, We'll be in PHILLY, gettin' all SILLY. In our spare TIME from a scene of CRIME, we'll take TIME to make up a RHYME and then hear the CHIME and fix Mark Lombards CANINE by NINE and then we'll DINE in Center City, a favorite part of MINE of PHILLY with some alcohol free WINE. Now its our time to SHINE, cuz we know that philly is SUBLIME.

Now how do you like my RHYME, G??

desi, your rhyme is great.

God will not send me to Philly, because he doesn't want the town to look silly. Philly people will not want Tink in town, because Tink will fly higher than Mr. Willy.
God will not send both you and me to Philly, because desi alone is enough to make the town silly.  You can fix Mark Lombard Upper Canine, but leave his Lower Canine for me.

Congratulation, tinker bell

I am waiting anxiously for UCSF. I am wondering how did you "follow your application closely"?? I had my interviewed Nov. I emailed Barbra and recieved no response. The phone did not go through either. Any suggestion???

Oh, tinker BELL, life now is so SWELL. If only it could BE, that you to would come to PHILLY. ::SIGH:: Maybe it wasn't meant to BE. Now you SEE how fate played a ROLE. You applied BEFORE but not to UCSF, you didn't even get into PItt which at that time had a 16 DAT SCORE.

So all of you who are contemplating where you shall GO, rest assured that FATE will come knocking on your DOOR.

Go TINKER BELL!!

ALI,

How did I follow my application closely? I went to the admissions office and stand there at the door, until someone tells me the stat of my application and then I leave, usually it takes me ten min. to do so. I guess this option is not a feasible thing to do for every one. I never call the admissions office though. The reason that Barbra hasn't gotten back to you is that she doesn't know what's going on yet. Your file is reviewed by the admissions committee, not Barbra.

I am going to send my deposit to PENN if I don't hear from UCSF next week.

We will see where my fate takes me..........

Hey ALI, come with me to PHILLY.

PENN is GREAT, It would be fun to be your CLASSMATE!! Gimme a PM and let me know why you picked PENN!!

DesiDentist, Ali's new classmate.

Penn is great too, only that it's more expensive than UCSF. And the weather in SF is better. Penn is a very good school. You can't go wrong with either. Good luck on your ucsf application

Well UCSF was my last official interview! My conclusion.....UCSF is a great school, but I don't think its for me.

The interview day was completely disorganized and drawn out. The overview of their curriculum/program was not discussed enough to my satisfaction. Let's just say that I know more about the cafeteria, gym, and murals/paintings on their walls, than I do about didactics, clinical experiences, dental facilities, etc. Hmm, maybe this was an isolated incident, and is not representative of the dental program itself.

I know UCSF can put together a better presentation than what I/we received, however I think they will always have people who will bend over backwards to get in. Out of our group of 12, 11 said that if they were accepted, they would go in a heartbeat. Guess who the lone holdout was?

This is not intended to put down UCSF.....like I said it's a great school for a great price. My intention is to merely share my opinion of the interview day. Good luck and I hope you all go to the school of your choice.

aguitier:

I am happy you looked at where you will be more happier. I felt the same way as you did at my UW interiew. Granted the school is cheap, but they really need to get things in order there. Just because you say you are #1 doesn't mean you are, PROVE IT TO ME and the interview is a great place to do it!!!

I wish you success, and hope everyone picks their school where they truly believe they will be happy. :hardy:

The interview coordinator at ucsf is by all means an admissions officer. She does most of the time handle paper works, not advertise the school. She has never attended dental school, nor do dental research. She can't tell much about the curricullum, the clinical or research aspect because she doesn't know about it. All of that is handled by another department. If you have doubt or questions, address your questions to recruitment office or student services office. I think that ucsf interview is very different compares with what I saw at Temple and Case. However, public schools knowing that they are number one don't usually feel the urge to advertise themselves that much. They always get more applicants than they can probably accept, hey why bother? For schools that has good interview like Temple, it's a big task to fill a large class, and the school is not in the best place on earth. (Notice why only 30% of Temple students are female?) that's why they try to impress at interview.
This is only my observations.

Desi-

Thanks for your input. Yes, that has always been my outlook in choosing a dental school ever since I started with the interview process. My interviews have always been low pressure because in my opinion, that is the time that the school needs to put its best foot forward. The interview signifies their interest in you. Now it is your turn to identify whether the school fulfills the criteria you are interested in. To tell you the truth, I could care less of rankings....whether they claim to be #1 or 53 (however many dental schools there are). Show me what you have to offer and I'll see if it fits.....it's as simple as that!

Tink-

I also appreciate your input as well. The interview was headed by Ms. Barbra Richardson. If I'm not mistaken, isn't she an admissions person? Either way, whoever is in charge of the interview day, whether it be a "paper pusher" or not, should have someone who is knowledgeable about dental related issues like clinics, research, and facilities, talking to us. However, like you've mentioned, UCSF has the prestige and money issue going for it....so it will always have people pounding on its doors. My friend has accepted their offer and will be entering this fall as a D1. But like me, he was disappointed with the interview. Again, I am not putting down UCSF, it's a great school and I know its near and dear to your heart. Just sharing my observations......🙂

Agutier,

I honor your opinion. Sadly, I felt the same way about my interview at ucsf. However, the interview was organized by one person, and it does not represent that is how the faculties and staff here work. I've been fortunate to be here for almost a year. And I had also worked here before, so I know the school pretty well. Here at UCSF, we are blessed to have many top notch scientists join our faculty, so we students take advantage learning from them many great things. Just remember that once you are in school, you are not dealing with admissions any more....you will mostly work with your classmates and profs.
My interview was something I want to put behind, because things like that will change in the future. And if put on the pros and cons list, ucsf has many pros to offer for me. That's why I highly consider it. For example, what dental school will let you use laser instruments and teach you about it? Also, you have a brand name education for a very cheap price, and I have worked with many faculties here, and they are very very nice, even though I'm only a post-bac. I did raise my concern after the interview, but they told me assured me the school is not like that. Our school is not flawless, but I hope that we will change it soon in the future. I'm happy that you are honest about your feelings. Because you are not the only one who feels that way out there. I'm sure you will be very happy with your choice, UOP is a good school.

About that UCSF interview... Yeah, it was pretty lame. I really felt bad for people who came to the school not knowing a thing about it because I don't think they would have left knowing anything more than when they walked in. Except maybe what kind of questions the schools asks at the interview.
Aside from that though, I am choosing to go there without much hesitation. I spent seven weeks up there at the dental school last summer in the clinics, specialties, and research departments so I know what it's about. Judging from the caliber of the people that were at the interview, I am confident we'll have an awesome class! The school really goes to great lengths to gather some amazing people. And everything else is off the hook up there. Just those admission officers, damn... 😕
Oh yeah, Arby's my buddy from school and we applied to almost all the same schools. Both of us got into UCSF, but he's choosing UOP. Two schools, same city, same degree in the end! Shout out to Arby, we gotta represent up in the Bay Area! 😎

Word......😀

Let the games begin!!

Loudy,
u must be a UMP student, I'm looking forward to meet u in the Fall. Are u at LBSU now?
Tinker Bell-GOLDEN GATE DENTAL 007😎

Hey Tink,
Yes, I was! And I already graduated LBSU so I am just trying to rake in a little money for the big move-in now. Whoa, hold on a minute! You're Miss Post-Bacc! I'm the guy who was with you at Temple. 😀 What's up, girl! How is the class website coming along?

Hey Loudy, it's great to meet you here on SDN. The class web site is coming along well. I need to put on some more stuff. I sent u an invitation last week but haven't seen u joined the web group yet.
See you soon, classmate.
