Ok.... anyone have any friends at UCSF in any discipline? Whats the deal with housing. UCSF PGY-1 salary is ~$38,000..... does that get you a decent place in San Francisco to rent?

Does anyone know if UCSF offers housing subsidization or owns blocks of apartments/homes to rent at a reduced rate.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated with a reply to this forum.

UCSF does not own housing. There are no subsidized housing. Many residents who live in the city either have room mates, moon light or do something creative to afford the $1000/month rents. The area around Moffit Hospital is a primarily residential area, with houses, some of which are available for rent...rooms which are available for rent. Apartments are quite rare and as such, you're competing with medical students, nursing students, PhDs etc for availability.

Most residents live away from campus. Daly City is about 15 mins away via 19th avenue (when it's not jammed). Rent there is quite reasonable (by N Calif standards). South San Francisco is popular, as is Brisbane and Millbrae (a bit further out, near the airport).

Many of the attendings in the neurosurgery department live outside of the city, as far away as Hillsborough, Lafayette, Pacifica, etc.

Hope this helps.

Most UCSF general surgery residents live in the city. There is no subsidized housing and rent is rather high in SF. The rental market has eased quite a bit over the past 2 years so that prices have come down a bit and a resident physician should be able to compete easily for rental apts/houses (this was not the case in the late 90s). Because surgery residents spend time at the various hospitals around the city, there isn't a need to live near Parnassus. Some have lived outside SF, mostly the married type, but the commute can be challenging, particularly for post-call residents.
