About 7-8 weeks ago I got an email from UCSF saying that they're reviewing my AMCAS file and that they'd let me know in 3-10 weeks whether I'm getting an invitation to fill out the secondary. I was just wondering how long it took for the other non-residents out there to hear from them. Do they ever just forget about you altogether? I read here that BU does that quite a lot. Thanks.

took 7 weeks to get my rejection letter. good luck to you though. Somebody's gotta represent the out-of-staters!

took them about 11 weeks to give me my rejection, i'm an instater too btw. i heard the average is usually 7-10 weeks. hopefully you'll hear good news though, best of luck. peace.

Well, I'll probably be getting a rejection too but I guess the silver lining is that they didn't make us waste our time and money submitting the secondary. 🙂

I've heard it takes so long because they let each member of the adcom take home each application and read it while sitting on the toilet. 😛

Gosh UCSF!
Its a school that a lot of people are crazy about, but have not visited. Obviously, it's a great school, but those of you who have rejections...don't feel bad. Having seen its location and surroudings...not something to die over.

What exactly do you dislike about UCSF's location and surroundings?

I walked past UCSF everyday on my way to elementary school. The weather is foggy half the time. The Haight Ashbury bum district is a few blocks down, some people like that I guess. Golden Gate park is pretty close. Sunset district is decent and relatively safe. As said, it's not bad, but nothing spectacular.

Pinkertinkle posted pretty much how I feel about the surroundings. Even though SF is in Cali...its weather is more akin to Chicago (windy and foggy)

Also, I have little appreciation for the "professional" environment surrouding the campus...not as laid back as I would like. It would be different, if there was an undergraduate campus. Not to state the obvious, this is the insignificant opinion of an applicant who just turned in his secondary to SF a few weeks ago.

Its an awesome school undoubtedly....

I am out of state and got the same e-mail as you are talking about in August, didn't hear back, assumed they were waiting for my August MCAT score. Then at the end of Oct they sent me e-mail saying, why haven't you turned in your secondary yet? and when I checked the web site it said they had requested a secondary in early Sept.

So I recommend that you check their web site (the one listed in that first e-mail), log in and make sure that they don't think they've asked for a secondary yet. You can call them, but I called earlier this week and they sounded overworked and uninterested in phone calls.

i think it took them about 6 weeks to get back to me about a secondary. i am in-state. their secondary is the easiest: "is your amcas true and correct? sign here and send us your money." i have been waiting about 7 weeks since my file was complete.... crossing my fingers and hoping for an interview. i have heard of people waiting as long as 4 months to hear about an interview.

as for you... you are insane. 😛 have you ever been to chicago? i live pretty close to UCSF, right on the other side of the park, and i'll admit that the neighborhood has some of the coldest and foggiest weather in the bay area, but that still doesn't put it anywhere close to chi-town in terms of cold, wind, and misery. don't be so crazy.

Right on, DrWuStar! SF weather ain't got nuthin' on the midwest.
It's not like the rest of Cali but it's not that bad. ...And some of us like chilly fog...

UCSF may not be in the most fabulously interesting area of SF but the view is spectacular and I think having GG park and Haight/Ashbury nearby are assets. And compare it to the threads about the NYC med schools I was reading the last couple days where people are like, it's not thaaat ghetto, not thaaat many people get hit by stray bullets etc. I'd take boring (and not even Iowa cornfield boring, just boring few blocks within a generally cool area) over sketchy any day. But that's just me.

Although I hate the Bay Area with a passion not yet realized by modern man, I will easily cede that UCSF is an amazing medical school with an awesome faculty, students, and facilities. That being said, I think I'm ready to move out of CA after my senior year (I've lived in CA since I was 6 years old...and I've lived in both the greater Los Angeles area and San Francisco's Bay Area). CA is a great state and there are tons of stuff to do out here if you're a young person (with access to a car). LA is one of the few places on Earth where you can go to the beach and surf in the morning (Leo Carillo, Zuma, Malibu, etc)..and then go skiing/snowboarding (Mammoth, Big Bear, etc), in the afternoon. However, I think I'm ready for a change of scenery and I REALLY want to head out to the east coast for med school.

I have been to Chicago and I think the fog and cold are comparable in both places. At least in Chi-town, one doesn't have to deal with the hills.

I think it took less than 3 weeks before UCSF sent out a secondary to both my roomate and I. My roomate is an out of state applicant. After the secondary, it took UCSF 5 weeks before sending out an invitation for interview. For my roomate it was 7 weeks. I'm surprised because her MCAT scores were higher than mine.

Im slightly confused by UCSF and would like some input from you all...I have a 37 on the MCAT, 3.75 Pre-med GPA from a top-ten college and was a varsity athlete in college. But still did clinical volunteer work in Nepal over the summer, worked at Bain (a prestigious consulting firm), and am currently doing developmental neurobiology lab research. What kind of criteria does UCSF have for secondaries????? I didn't even get one? I didn't think Id get in...but I thought Id at least get a secondary. Oh and Im also a Cali resident...born and raised.

Lemme summarize the admissions process:

The adcomms take your application, put it in a hat, sprinkle in some adcom fairy dust, then say some gothic mythic hooplah, and then take out the lucky ap for an interview.

Seriously, don't worry so much about it. You've got awesome stats and ec's and are bound to get in somewhere awesome. Good luck on the rest of your schools!

Seriously...and with regards to my essay my premed advisor loved it. Especially the part I write about being a patient in the pedsICU at UCSF for 4 weeks when I was 15 yrs old and during which the chief of pediatric surgery became a good friend of mine and even invited me to his retirement party four years later. You really gotta wonder...

Med school adcoms are not aware of Bain or McKinsey. This is not Wharton admissions.

At what point did your AMCAS become varified? Maybe they overlooked you because they were overwhelmed with AMCAS applications already. You sound like an extremely qualified student and if you can't get accepted somewhere than few of us have a chance anywhere!

No not stanford, but I did clarify what Bain was in my essay and in my little ec description. Whatevs...I have interviews lined up and I really believe that you end up going where you were meant to go.

ucsf being an ultra top med school probably rejects a bunch of applicants who are qualified to go a medical school. spots are limited and its a very competitive place to go to...even to get a secondary.

they have people they are looking for and if its not you then dont be insulted or anything. it is ucsf. you sound pretty badass so go to the other interviews and impress.
