UDM or Penn

Alright guys I need some input on this one UDM or Penn?

I am out of state for both (from the east coast)

UDM: relatively cheaper, strong(est) clinical experience, specializing rate?
Penn: good specializing rate, strong basic sciences, good clinical, networks worldwide

I made the mistake of not choosing UDM four years ago, a decision I some what regret now. I would choose UDM if I were you, just like you stated its cheaper (especially if your OOS its one of cheapest for non-res) 100grand difference, very strong clinical you will practice at detroit receiving hospital somedays I think, my friends say the stuff they see there is insane lots of crazy people lol, detroit is not too bad to live especially if you stay in downtown or suburbs, and iam sure you can get a handle of the weather if your from the east coast.

Penn does have a great specializing rate, but you can specialize anywhere if you put the work in.

Being a UDM DS1, I say UDM (duh).... but then again, I know nothing of Penn...

As far as specialization goes, if your driven and have the work ethic of a farm horse, you'll specialize pretty much anywhere you land, so picking a school for the sole purpose of specialization is (IMO) not a good criteria.

Clinical experience is important, but real dental training (IMO) doesn't begin until you graduate and enter private practice, thats when your hand skills really pick up (at least thats what they say).

Overall, I love UDM, yes there are a few annoying things I'd love to change, but overall, a good institute.

Also, I think Philly is probably a little bit better of a city than Detroit. Don't get me wrong, a lot of my Philly friends have been held up at gunpoint and had their apartments broken into, but generally I have always personally felt safe.

Honestly it is a close choice and you can't go wrong.

People make Detroit sound way worse than it is. Yes, if you walk around the ghetto at night something bad might happen. But I've walked around Detroit at 2 in the morning and never felt unsafe. Just like all cities, you just have to be aware of where you're going. The school is in a semi-bad area, but I think that's common for dental schools. Maybe it's because I'm from Michigan, but I really don't think living in Detroit should be as big of a deterrent as people make it seem.

haha yeah when I was predent BU was just slightly on the decline, but like most people what I thought was a small hill turned out to be a cliff. Anyways a dentist is dentist in the end no matter what litter or glitter they are covered in.
