UDM vs. NYU vs. Temple vs. NOVA

I was accepted into UDM and NOVA back in December and put deposits at both. I was accepted into NYU and Temple this month and now have a decision to make between the 4 schools. I am from California (Sacramento) and don't mind moving to the East Coast if that makes a difference.


I personally loved NYU and NOVA the most, but without a doubt they are the most expensive? Is it better to follow the "cheaper school" formula or choose a school in which I felt like I would be the best fit?

congrats! i would personally be interested in where i felt most comfortable. cost comes into play... but i do know that if I'm spending the money regardless, i would go where i would see myself enjoying. you are going to be in debt regardless, and will be able to pay it off. remember that the next 4 years are going to be the most crucial years towards your career and life. i would get more out of a school i was enthusiastic about. i believe that you get back w/e you put in. and i would put in more into a school that i was more keen in. thats how i would make the decision...

I think its between Temple and UDM(dont know much about it, but seems cheaper). Nova does not have a great rep in terms of its clinic and getting patients, but thats for you to find out from their students. NYU is 100k more than temple. Remember one thing: you will be studying/working very hard for your 4 years, you wont have a great deal of time to go roam the city or go out to the beach all the time.

If someone is paying for your education, then go to whichever school you would like, NYU would then be a great choice.

Thanks. I was leaning on Temple due to slightly cheaper cost. NYU seems really attractive with the location and diversity on campus.

I don't really think what bing12 said about Nova is accurate anymore since they've redesigned their clinical requirements/system. According to their students, chairs and patients don't seem to be an issue anymore and they even have a 3 month waitlist to become a patient at NSU. But I agree with the notion that you should choose the school where you'll be happiest. If you're putting in the amount of work that's required by dental school and you absolutely hate your school or just don't feel connected to it, then you're going to be miserable.

What I said about nova is purely from what I have read and heard only a few times, thats is why I specified to ask their students(upperclassmen). If the clinical experience is great, then its definitely a school to consider. I dont think anyone really knows what school they will be the happiest at, its almost impossible to judge from one interview. I just want to make you well aware that cost should be one of the highest priorities as well as quality of education. and if the quality of education among the schools are close, then cost should weigh in the most.

For example(these are estimates) if you take out $400,000 in loans, at a 5.4% interest rate, and pay it over 20 years: total payment: $650,000($2,700/month). if you pay it back over 10 years, total amount you owe: $518,000( $4,300/month).

If you take out $300,000 in loans, at a 5.4% interest rate, paying over 20 years total payment would be: $491,000(about 2k/month). it over 10 years: $389,000(about $3,200/month).
