Ok, so I wasn't going to make a poll (if i even did it correctly haha) but I'm really torn and haven't been getting much responses just posting blindly in NYU or UDM threads..so here we go. You dont have to give reasons why..but if you'd like to that would be awesome. Thanks a bunch everyone!

I voted for Detroit Mercy. If it weren't for my other schools, I would've decided on UDM in a second. Stronger clinicals, laid back students and caring faculty make it an awesome dental school. If you don't plan to specialize, then I would go to UDM.

thanks Prez, I must say I was impressed w/ all of their clinical experience...being that it's in a pretty urban area where many people can't afford to go to an established practice. I didn't get to meet any of the students b/c my tour was kind of a quick walk through as I was the only person that interviewed that specific day

so far so good...thanks for voting guys.

I do not know where in Detroit the school is, but all I know Detroit is one big piece of $hit city.

I visit my wifes family there once a year and hate going. I love her family, its just Detroit is so run down adn people are so poor. last year when I went, my unlce was telling me how unemployment was near 14%.

Sure there are some nice parts, but the majority of the population there is down on their luck. I guess that might equal more patients, but even in dental school it is very hard to deal with poor patients, especially the ones that make just a tad too much to be on medicaid. The worst about poor patients is you make this wonderful treatment plan and 90% of the time they can't afford it and you just pull the teeth.

Considering NYU is the alternative, I'd go with UDM even though I don't know much about the school. Fact is, NYU has 3x the number of students and a reputation of producing mediocre dentists.

as if costco's chicken isn't mediocre at best?

jb!🙂

Cost of living is less in Detroit I think. Buy a place there, have roommates pay your mortgage, insteaad of throwing away $$$ living in NYC for 4 years. Your house will increase in value and you will make money to pay off that debt without doing a thing.

I definitely agree with this Dork. Poor people don't deserve dental care. I mean, what's the point?!? It's not like they have food to chew.

haha wow...i never expected this type of response. But basically here is what i'm boiling it down to. DETROIT: better clinical experience (i could be wrong..its just my opinion), smaller class size, mock board preparations, converting a hospital into one huge dental clinic.....NYU: chance to get some experience w/ aesthetics (veneers, invisalign w/o having to do much CE), all the opportunites you could want at a d-school, digital curriculum, very nice facilities. I didn't mention cost b/c i'm going on the Air Force HPSP. Although in NYC i'd still have to take out a 20-30k loan just in case...which is pretty damn small considering it would be 330k+....hence my dilemma

I think that alone answers your question.

Yeah, if that's the case, then WHATELSE can you ask for, LOL

Decisions, Decisions 🙂

Goodluck shamrock, & make sure you pick the school where you'll be happy for the next 4 years

If this is who I think it is and you go to MSU currently, I vote for NYU. Branch out and see the country, you know Michigans going down the ****ter anyway.

Naw I didn't go to MSU man...i've been in Chicago my whole life so I really know nothing about living in Michigan...i'd love to hear more about it though (both good and bad)..even though i'm really trying to not let "location" be a factor. I"m trying to base my decision solely on the school and its credentials

I never said they don't deserve, I just said they can't pay for it. Not a debate for this thread. Trust me man, I feel like $hit when I tell these people I can't do anything for them but at the same time I do not want to pay for their treatment out of pocket or have taxes raised to do so. Big issue.

As for buying a house in detroit, not so sureif that is a wise idea. Detroit is one of those cities that did not see the boom of the last 5 years and is currently droping in value.

I think I found yet another means for comparison...i printed out both curriculums and i'm going to compare them. but if you guys want to keep voting/giving your reasons as to what you think about each school it would be much appreciated. best of luck to the class of 2011 (and 2010 for you UoP folk!!)

Just an FYI: Invisalign training is basically a weekend seminar course - my dad took it one weekend in Rochester (NY). When I told him how exciting it was to get into NYU and come out invasilgn trained (among other things) he basically said "So. I got invisalign trained in one weekend." Anyway, not that I'm saying it's a huge factor for you, but you can pretty much do that in a day or two once you get out of school - well that's my understanding anyway.

Exactly, Cymbidium, I couldn't agree with you anymore!!!!! Not only that, but my dentist graduated with his DDS degree from Columbia and took an invisalign course at NYU, which was like a two-day course, so in the grand scheme of things, you really won't be missing out on much and either way, you can still get your invisalign & veneers training, etc.

I voted for NYU...and would you look at that? as if your decision wasnt hard enough before...i went ahead and tied the poll! hahah 😀, anyway, i'd go for NYU since cost isnt much of an issue with you, and ...i know its been said to death...its NY. Both schools will get you the degree you want...neither gives you much of an edge for specialty...so it all comes down to where you want to be for the next 4 years.
