I am currently at a community college in Florida right now and I will either get my A.A. in Biology this semester or in the summer. Due to some poor advising on my end, I don't have the classes I need to transfer to any university, even though I'll have my A.A. (I am missing Bio 2, Bio 2 Lab, Chem 2 & Chem 2 Lab) I emailed the advisors at UF and no one has gotten back to me yet for my questions, so I was hoping someone could help me out.

1. What pre-reqs would I need to transfer into the Bio program at UF? I read in some kind of handbook on the site that along with the mentioned classes above, I will need to take Calculus and Analytical Geometry 1.

2. Does the Bio program accept transfers in the Spring term? I read on another part of the site that some programs do not accept Spring transfers due to class scheduling.

Ideally, I would like to take trig and pre-calc this summer & all the above mentioned classes in the Fall at my community college. Then I would like to transfer to UF in the Spring. If UF doesn't take Spring transfers, should I transfer to another university for a semester or stay at my CC? I really appriciate any advice that you guys can give me, since I can't get in touch with the advisors & my family just gives terrible advice -___-

This is probably not the right place to ask these questions, simply because most people here aren't going to know the answers unless they were in your exact same situation. Your best bet would be to contact an advisor and ask them these questions.

Dude's right, dude.

Your question is related to pre-vet in the loosest possible way. Finding someone here who's an expert on admissions at a specific undergrad school might not be happening for you.

I glanced at the UF site, to see what you were working with, and that thing is complicated.

Phone bomb the advising department and talk to them.

(Also, make sure you need trig AND pre-calc before you drop the money for both classes. Most pre-calc classes include the material from trig, so you can kill two birds with one mathy stone, if you're clever.)

Yeah I second this, be persistent and it should pay off. I also peeked at the UF website, yikes! looks like a less than fun website to try and navigate around. Hopefully you have time during the very limited hours they listed for transfer student advising calls (i sincerely hope my school isnt that difficult to prospective students and transfers)

Good luck!!

Thanks for the help guys. I finally heard back from an advisor in the Bio program & it looks like UF isn't even an option for me anymore. The advisor said that I needed to get B's in all my pre-reqs the FIRST time and have a GPA of 3.5. They told me that since I got a D in Chem 1 & retook the class, I wouldn't even be considered for the program 🙁

Yes, they do accept Spring term. As well as Fall and Summer.

The classes you need to transfer are Bio 1, Bio 2, Chem 1, Chem 2 (all with associated labs), and calculus.

Also you need at least 60 credits, they only accept upper level transfers.

You could always come down to Miami and go to FIU. Hell is more fun when there's company (also we have the best pre-health advising ever!). :3

I've lived in South Florida my entire life, I really want a change of scenery. My sister also went to FIU as well & the commute was TERRIBLE. I'm thinking about FSU right now, wanna transfer? XD

If you graduate with an AA from any FL CC you are guaranteed to be accepted as a transfer student to one of the public universities in FL.

It may not be the one you want (i.e. UF, but no big loss there!) but they have to accept you. Also, you may not initially be able to enter the program you want (you are missing some prereqs) but you should be able to change your major and pick up the courses you need as you progress.

Guaranteed Transfer to the State University System

All Florida community college associate in arts graduates are guaranteed certain rights under the statewide Articulation Agreement listed in Florida Administrative Code 6A-10.024. The Articulation Agreement governs the transfer of students from Florida public community colleges to the state university system. Guarantee of university admission does not guarantee admission to a limited access program. In a limited access program, the admissions requirements are more selective and may include a higher grade point average (GPA), higher test scores, auditions and/or portfolios. Selection for admissions to university limited access programs is competitive. However, community college A.A. graduates have the same opportunity to enroll in these programs as students who began at the university.
