Hey all,
I've been away for a while busting my butt in physics and biochem, trying to pull 2 A's...but got hold of some juicy information yesterday. I called UF about my application and they said it was waiting to be reviewed, and it was in the second mailing. However, they have already sent out their first batch of interview "invites"...they begin interviewing AUGUST 18th. How exciting? Did anyone else apply to UF? I hope I get an interview...but my DAT is what may break me...so stressful.

Hey Dexa, when are you taking your DAT? Any early predictions on what you'll make? Your GPA looks great.

Hey,
I took the DAT...didn't do as well as I would have liked, and pulled a 19 AA. I plan to retake it in September however...hope I still get interviews though.

I think you will get an interview from UF. I know a girl who got an 18 AA and has an interview with UF already.

Thanks for the confidence boost...is it just me or does UF interview early? Other schools I've called haven't even begun to look at apps...ie, NYU, UCLA, Columbia.

Realize UFCD interviews mostly all FL residents that apply to their school.

Yes I've heard this to be true. A fellow dental student told me they interview about 99% of the people who actually attend UF for undergrad and apply.

I agree. I]I think [/I] if you have over a 3.4 and 18 on the DAT then they will offer an interview. I'm sure not everyone in the state of FL has even that ...

Ha ha, I hope thats true.

Why is it that everyone at UF that does dental, is a food science/nutrition major? Well, not everyone, more than normal.

I'm beginning to notice that trend as well. It seems mostly the UFCD people from UF undergrad go for that major, I dont even think that major is offered down here at Univ. of South Florida.

Because the degree is easy as $hit. My friend at UF did it. He got a 3.6 and was drunk 3/4 of his undergrad days. The only hard classes are your science pre-req's. At UF its about numbers. They don't care if you have a degree in Bio-chem or Ballet, as long as the GPA is high.

I was originally a food science and human nutrition major, then I took fundamentals of human nutrition and realized I couldn't study about the food pyramid and eating well the rest of my life, I needed more chemistry, so I did biochemistry...while this is more scientific, I guess good grades in this major do "look" better than that of a food science major...but I concede to the fact that UF indeed cares only about numbers, and its kinda sad. Luckily mine are good though 😀

Another sad part is that it doesn't end at admissions. UF is so freak'n cut throat. My buddy tells me of all these horror stories from there. He said students stress because you need a minimum 2.75 gpa to stay in the program. Well I said thats not bad but then he informed me a "B" starts at 85!! I about crapped my pants.

Not enough UFCD students on here to say what really goes on behind closed doors.

I think the UF program is rigorous, but that only breeds good dentists in the end and is well needed. I don't want to make any assumptions (jinx my dental school experience) but I'm not sure I'd want a dentist working on me who can't pull above an 85. I do know some idiots who got into UF last year, and apparently are in for quite a surprise. UF all around is pretty cut throat, the compettition here is scary and ruthless...in just about everything (except food science lol).

If they interview that many people, then what are one's chances of getting in, post-interview? <<20% ??

I don't know if that is true but from my experience the adcom doesn't give any sort of preference for undergrad alum-not even basic "you are more than just a number" treatment. Of course the opposite is true when they call to ask for donations.

Don't make the assumption that good grades=knows what they are doing in clinic. There are plenty of people who can memorize information but lack the ability to actually put it into practice.

Very true - that not only applies to dentistry, but to the whole of academia.
