I am trying to set up my icu/ccu elective at the moment. I know UF is a closed unit w/ 30 beds, one of the biggest in the country, and from what i understand, one of the best around. Has anyone actually done a rotation at UF, and can comment on any pertinent info about this rotation. I ask b/c i'm from NY, and the drive is too long(17 hrs, and i hate driving!!!!), but if the rotation is going to be top notch and a great learning experience, then i'm all up for it; otherwise, i'll just do my icu/ccu elective in ny. Thanks!

I am a fourth year medical student at UF going into Anesthesia who has done an elective in the SICU earlier this year. Are you interested in the rotation b/c you want the experience or you want to go to UF for Anesthesia? Nevertheless it was one of the best rotations I have done in med school. The attendings are all awesome, the anesthesia residents that you will work with are really nice, and you will get to do alot of procedures. The SICU is unique here in that it is completely run by anesthesia. The typical day involves rounds until noon, procedures after that, and unless you are on call (they like you to stay overnight every 5th night or so) you can go home early in the afternoon. I have been told that UF's critical care program is second only to Hopkins as far as the east coast goes. Plus warm weather and a fun college town for a month.

Thanks for your reply. I am interested in anesthesiology, and wouldn't mind going to UF for their program in anes, but i'd like to remain in the northeast preferably. I am definitely interested in the SICU experience b/c i've heard good things about the rotation, but i am still unsure about the long drive. is UF a DO friendly place?

Out of the 22 students they take each years, I think maybe 4 or 5 are either DO or FMGs. So if they like you and you have decent numbers, I think you have a good chance.

Rotated at UF's SICU as a med student. It was awesome.

Lots of very pertinent teaching, focused but pertinent rounds, now with a morning report with some great discussions.

The patients are sick, VERY VERY sick, but amazing how so many do get better.

As mentioned above, tons of procedures.

At the end of the rotation, you're a better physician, and you have fun learning lots. Can't recommend it enough.
