Hi,

I'm interested in either going to UF or UNC for Pharmacy School. I have a BA in an unrelated subject from a top 10 college and no experience as pharmacy technician. So far, I have a 4.0 in science and math from a combination of classes that I took as an undergrad and at community college.

Does anyone know what percentage of applicants UF or UNC accept? Will my lack of experience hurt me? Any other insights you can give me on how competitive admission is to these schools would help.

What state are you a resident of? I know UF places preference on Florida residents, but I'm not sure about UNC. It also depends on your PCAT. If you're not a Florida resident and you have a borderline PCAT it might be hard to get into UF since they only accept a handful of out of state residents per year, and they consider a 90+ PCAT competitive for non-residents. On the other hand, they also like to see research and volunteer activities so that would definitely be a plus. Your GPA and undergrad are nice, but that isn't going to be everything the really competitive schools look at.

UNC accepts no more than 18% out of state. It's hard but not impossible..

I'm a Florida resident and got into both; and my GPA isn't a 4.0, so it's possible. As mentioned, make sure you try to get experience and volunteer. Also, doing well on the PCAT is important.

edit: I also wanted to add, I think it is statistically a little easier to get into UNC as an out-of-state resident. The person above mentioned 18%, and I think UF accepts somewhere around 6-7%.

Yeah I think UF is actually less (maybe 2% out of state?) because on the PharmCAS page it says they accept 6 non-residents out of ~310 admissions (for all 4 campuses). I could be wrong though. That does seem low, but it is a state school.

I'm a FL resident. Thanks for the responses. I'm going to volunteer at a hospital during the summer. I've had a hard time finding pharmacy internships for non-pharmacy students.

Yeah same here... I got my experience from volunteering in a hospital as well. There was only one place that accepted volunteers in the pharmacy too.

I finally got a tech job practically the same month I was accepted to pharmacy school, but it's totally worth it to save money for school and learn drug names/other experience at the same time.

It's more competitive for out of state students at UNC they have state quotas of 72% in-state to 18% out of state. I'm an out of state student who got into UNC: GPA - 3.85 PCAT 89%
Your grades look good enough, but lack of a science major and inexperience may hurt you a little bit
