I have to decide by tomorrow. Harvard is about $110,000 more than UF in state. I like that Harvard has P/F grading, only 35 students and would guarantee me into a specialty program. I am interested in specializing but might also want to pursue general dentistry after graduation. UF is a great school, near home/family and friends, and is significantly cheaper than Harvard. Which would you guys choose and why?

Go to Harvard so that you can brag and feel superior! 🙂

I didn't get into Harvard, but I would have jumped at my first chance to.

Harvard > Cheapest school > second cheapest school etc.

Ya, I also feel like Harvard is that one exception to the rule, "go to the cheapest school". Magic seems to happen there, and doors are wide open for specialties.

There's an endodontist who graduated from Harvard and is now working in Gainesville. I can PM you his website if you're curious.

I'll be the odd man out and say UF. Significantly less debt, better weather (if you hate the cold like I do), close to family/friends, still a great school.

I'd frame that Harvard acceptance letter and go to Florida.

LOL - its like all the tech geeks that go to Harvard just so they can drop out and have people know they got into harvard

no joke, I had a job interview for a Mortgage Broker position this morning and I pulled out my Columbia acceptance letter and they were blown away and said "wow Obama went there"..... I just got hired. I also have a finance degree from UF though.

Pretty sure they hired you because you got into Columbia and not because you got a degree from UF.

So my recommendation to OP is to take a gap year and try for Columbia next cycle

What did you pick OP?

I'd have to go with Harvard here, although UF is a great school too, from what I've heard.

I'm in the same boat, although I don't have acceptances to either haha. I interviewed at Harvard this week and UF tomorrow and have no clue what I would do if I got acceptances to both. I suppose that would be a great predicament to be in. I was very impressed with Harvard and how welcoming they were. I loved the freedom they seem to award you to pursue the education that you feel suits you best and they seem to support you to the best of their ability. I think a huge selling point was how adamant the students were about the P/F grading. They said that they couldn't imagine attending a school that wasn't. I guess I'll update with my thoughts on UF this weekend and possibly with Colombia after my interview next week. As of now, I can't get that list they gave us of their residency matching for last years class out of my head. Also, they gave us a tentative copy of the HSDM schedule for first year of class of 2020 that has yet to be approved and I got some good info from the first students through the new curriculum so PM me for info if you want.

So... where did you decide to go?

No more dentistry or for a part time job?

Been waiting on UF to extend me an interview invite. Im guessing this weekend is their last interview day. Goodbye state school 🙁

Harvard, especially with the way UF treats people during the interview, I wouldn't even look back.

Harvard, the connections you can make are priceless..

plus, Boston's wicked sick, dude.

I have no idea how the interview in the other room could have been so terrible, but I've heard this multiple times! 🙁 My interviewers were super nice, so I'm sorry for your experience. :/

But to OP: I'll be attending UF, and while it is an excellent school with a ton to offer, cost/family arrangements were potentially the biggest deciding factors for myself and a few others I spoke to who chose it over Penn, Columbia, or other attractive schools. The specialization rate for UF was high enough for me to feel comfortable, and since it offers every specialty under one roof, I felt it would be an easy place to find where I belong in a place of enthusiastic and friendly peers. They have recently dropped a couple spots in research funding, but remain highly ranked.

However, in the case of Harvard, I think it's a little different. You yourself said the class size is only 35...that's such an incredible opportunity, where you will probably have a very personalized learning experience. It is likely worth the extra money to have that. You are one of very few to make it in, and while you can simply frame the acceptance letter, you could genuinely be gaining a once in a lifetime education. I can't say I would choose Harvard without having applied/interviewed/even looked through their admissions site, but I know it gains a strong reputation for a reason, and would highly consider it regardless of cost. Though, like all schools, I'm sure it comes with flaws that most of us are unfamiliar with, and should be considered. For example, are the labs outdated, or renovated frequently? Is there a big/little mentorship match for smooth patient transitions?

The Harvard atmosphere will likely be a bit more high-pressure and research-based, but you can clearly handle that/may enjoy it if you've been selected to attend! I would have too much anxiety for the prestige, lol. But the small class size may truly make for a close-knit family (if it's important to you to have supportive peers). Do they offer an open house to get to know potential future classmates?

How did you feel on interview day at both schools? Happy, or ready to get out of there? Was there a sense of commradery, or did you feel out of place? At the end of the day, I think your gut will really tell you what you want, and you won't want to kick yourself for not listening to it. If time permits, reach out to current dental students at each and get some real answers. 🙂

As for P/F, that is a serious plus, but since you've done so well academically thus far, you have a strong chance to be ranked highly in the class if you choose to attend UF. I'm sure you'll be successful no matter what, so best of luck, and hope you keep us posted!!

Harvard if you are just doing DMD.

May be in same boat, interviewing at Harvard next week and accepted to UF.
