Congrats to everyone who got in! So cool to think that by the time I apply you all will be experienced second years who can show me around 🙂

why did they have to go and change the OOS tuition rule now!?? Its going to be a tough week figuring all this out. 🙁

Well.... If you've got marriage in mind in the next couple years, that's a likely loophole in the OOS tuition. 😉

Although I'll admit that this goes against my statistical theory that people should wait until they're 25 to get married. 😛

adunastella, I've tried to send you messages on here but don't think they're getting through (?) - got yours though and want to say CONGRATULATIONS!!! 😀👍

Didn't want you to think I'm not responding, I'm trying - sorry if you get multiples of the same message on account of that. Sent folder keeps showing I haven't sent anything although I did. Weird. Anyway, you can also reach me at the following e-mail address: [email protected]

Any Jax area folks who want to talk vet stuff, feel free to write me. E-mail may be the only way I can respond. 🙁

CONGRATS to all who are in, and to those who aren't, keep your chin up and don't give up!

Hopefully before you all are done there, I'll be accepted in too.

Thanks! I'm super excited but I have a huge decision to make... I did get your message from a few days ago and responded so I'm not sure what happened there. I just responded to your last message so let me know if you don't get it and I'll use you email.

Still nothing in the mail today. Blargh! Waiting sucks. I'm calling.

Aparrently I can't do that. On the letter it states that my tuition will be fixed at $44,192 per year regardless of changing residency status or an increase in tuition. I think I'm basically stuck looking for good scholarships and loans and working my butt off to make good grades in classes so I can get them.

Saw Lynette today when I went to hand in my official acceptance. She said there's a bunch of people who still haven't received their letters in Gainesville, so you're not alone if your letter hasn't come. Sorry for everyone that is experiencing that pain. I feel for you!

adunastella, got your message from yesterday and just replied. Hopefully you got it. Sorry, I wrote you a book, LOL!

I have decided to take the Animal Science and Animal Nutrition courses at Oklahoma State through correspondence... is anyone else doing this or has anyone already taken these courses at OSU? Just curious how do-able it will be to finish them over the summer or if I would be better off taking them at UF.... The reason I rather not take them at UF is because I plan on buying a house up there, and I doubt that will happen before classes start May 10....

Yeah, May 10 is pretty soon....but I drove around all day Saturday house hunting (to rent...I live here already) and there's a ton for sale in the NW area behind midtown. PM me if you have any questions.

I am currently taking the animal nutrition course at Oklahoma state, and I would not recommend it if you are in a time crunch. The way it works is there are 13 writing assignments (which are not difficult, just a little bit time consuming) and after you complete them and get the grade returned to you you have to notify them that you are ready to take the next test. The problem is you have to notify them at least 2 weeks before you take the test, which means the LEAST amount of time the course will take is about 12 weeks. Each assignment takes at least a day to get back (so that's about 2 weeks) and you need 2 weeks before getting each test (so that's 10 weeks). Basically I don't see how you can possibly finish the course in any time less than 3 months, and that's if you do a writing assignment every chance you get. It might be doable, but certainly not easy:/

i found out on saturday that i got waitlisted :/ I've been accepted at Western but i really want to go to UF, so I'm not sure what to do yet... Who else got a letter saying they're on the alternate list??

Thanks so much for your replies! I was all prepared to call OSU and give them my money today, ha. I definately don't want to be pressed for time on those courses. Just have no idea where I would stay if I can't close on a house before May 10...ahhh... I know it will all work out, it's just all happening so fast 🙂

Have you looked into the Animal Science/Nutrition classes at Kansas State?

Ouch.
At least that means it can't go up I guess....

Have you looked into the Animal Science/Nutrition classes at Kansas State? That's where I took mine. I completed them in about two months.

I did call them, but the sheet they handed out at the UF interview regarding the summer courses only listed K-State's Animal Nutrition course as being accepted by UF. Will they accept the Animal Science from KSU as well? The lady I spoke with at K-state really didn't seem to know much and told me to email the professor, whom I have not heard back from yet.

Btw - does anyone know how to search for "UF" in the search box? if I just put "UF" in there it doesn't like it 😡

Or if there are any UF student lurkers out there, I'm trying to get a question answered - do students get to work with animals at all before clinicals start in the 2nd summer? Ie, like catheters and palpitations and such?

I swear I saw a post about this from a UF student but I can't find it for the life of me. Something about bat necropsies as well.....

The waitlist people usually get in at UF, and it's generally a very short list FYI. I think there was only one year within the last 10 when waitlisters ddin't get in.

thanks philomycus! thats very reassuring 🙂

didnt get in 🙁. Im headed to Edinburgh for 5 years! at least i have something to look forward to. I'll def be doing a lot of traveling

😀 So I'm new to this forum, but I'm going to jump right in! I got my acceptance letter on Thursday, and I'm officially a member of the UF CVM Class of 2014!!! Can't wait to meet everyone!

For anyone that hasn't see it yet, there is a FB group, and some people are suggesting a get together for peeps already in G-ville.

I have lived here for 7 years now, so if I can help with anything, feel free to ask!

I'm sorry to hear about that, but you have an exciting adventure ahead of you!!

I posted this on the FB page for c/o2014, but I figured I'd put it on here - I would love to live with someone next year at Florida. I hate coming home to an empty house/apartment. I'll be more forth-coming on here, though. My boyfriend and I of 2 years just broke up on Saturday and I had thought if I stayed here, we'd continue living together with 2 of our other friends, as we did this year... but that's clearly not going to happen...
Still processing all of this, so I'm kinda a mess right now. But in general I'm an easy-going person and easy to get along with. I was thinking about a 2 or 3 bedroom place - either 1 or 2 roomies - I was thinking an extra room could be used as an office - which I'm sure would come in useful when we want to escape anatomy lab or the library!

I have 2 cats - they're no tyour typical cats - they're people-oriented and constantly want to be within sight of me, if not laying all over what I'm trying to accomplish at the moment. I was thinking about fostering a dog next year as well. Oh, and I have 2 turtles... I'm open to all kinds of pets, except maybe a snake.. still something I haven't gotten past there 🙂

I'm not a partier, but I do like to enjoy myself. I like outdoorsy things, but definitely don't consider myself athletic.

Anyway... now that this sounds like it's turned into a personal ad (lol)...
Contact me if you're interested - I would love to meet you!
You can find me on the UF College of Vet Med c/o 2014 - my name's Sandy.

Thanks!

Katiejo and LilyFrog,

My boyfriend and I are renting out our spare bedroom. One (or both, if you really want to get cozy) could rent it for the summer if you like. I have a dog and 2 cats, and can't fit anymore animals in the house, though. I will also be taking the summer courses at UF. Live in study group!

Thanks Kaelurus! I am actually in a similar situation myself. I live in Gainesville as well, and I have a spare bedroom (with private bathroom) in my 2 bedroom townhouse that I am looking to rent (preferably to a vet student 🙂) for $450 a month. I live within 5 minutes of campus and directly on a bus route. If anyone is interested please let me know!

Sorry, LilyFrog. Somehow I thought that you were looking for place too. My bad 😉 I'm at work and reading through this thread a little too quickly.

Thanks for that offer! I decided to go ahead and sign up for the correspondence courses through Oklahoma so that I have more time to find a house. Looks like we are all gonna have houses that need roomates, lol... though I would not mind renting from someone if they have a big, fenced-in yard and wouldn't mind my two labs and could put up with me for four years, ha, jk, I am very laid-back 😉

unfortunately I dont have a fenced in backyard 🙁 I wish I did though. I just walk my dog to the dogpark down the street from me on a regular basis so he can get his exercise and play time

Squirrel Ridge? If so, I probably see you all of the time!

Hey guys... I also have a room for rent! It's in a 3/2.5 so you would have your own sink and toilet but share a shower... unfortunately you can't have any pets... which I know is a problem with most vet students, but if anyone is interested PM me!

Actually I usually go to this small dog park behind the firestation by my house. But I've been to squirrel ridge a couple times and i love it! i only wish they had a small dog park for my dachshund.

Renting in Gainesville has gotten pretty difficult. Before the housing bust, everyone thought it was a good idea to buy property to either rent to students, or live in (with roommates) while they went to school. The price of property was sky-high, and the result is a flooded rental market causing the price of rent to drop to a point that it won't cover the mortgage on many of these over-priced houses. I don't recommend buying a house with the intention of paying for it with roommates. Buy a house you can afford on your own, and if you find a roomie to help cover the bills, its a bonus.

In my case, I went back to school after a career as an environmental consultant. I could afford my house on my own when I bought it, but decided to rent my spare bedroom to help cover bills when I went back to school. Finding someone that you are willing to let into your home is VERY difficult, and I have gotten burned enough times that I am not actively seeking to fill the room anymore. The way I see it, if I meet someone through school that is looking, and if they are a good fit, then I will rent. If not, well, I am perfectly happy having my home to myself 😀

Not to put a damper on it or anything, just trying to offer a bit of perspective.

I completely agree with you! It's very good advice 🙂 I remember my first roomate who really burned me back when I used to own a mobile home. It's def important to be able to afford where you are living without relying on roomates.

Hey guys remember I have an apartment up in Gainesville. It is located 3800 SW 20th Avenue. It is called University Terrace West. It is a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom apartment, with a kitchen and living room. It is $400 dollars monthly. If you need more information call Bryan at 352-339-0723. He is the one in charge of the apartment. In case my email is [email protected].

Congrats on getting in 🙂

I don't know much, but I do know the first spay/neuter is early in the 4th semester. 😀

I don't know much, but I do know the first spay/neuter is early in the 4th semester. 😀

I haven't started yet, but I know we're allowed to participate in spays/neuters monthly at Operation Catnip...which is a trap and release program.

As a freshmen I have participated in cow/calf necropies. Through a wetlab I have done 2 cats neuters on ferals under the supervision of a vet. I've participated in Catnip once as a vaccination station, and the 2nd as a surgery assistant. I've done rectal palpation on 5 cows. I've assited as the 'vet tech' for operation PAWS. I'm doing a bird handling wetlab tomorrow, and hope to tour a goar dairy facility this Sat. if selected. I also got to go to the CDC in Atlanta a few months back for their vet student day.

Opprotunities abound in the wetlabs in freshman year, if you seek them. Other than that, you will not touch an animal that isn't yours- but I think that's how it is everywhere.

Getting to do 2 neutuers on cats as a freshman was prety sweet.

Yay I'm excited to be part of the UF class of 2014! Can't wait to meet everyone!! I'm OOS so can those that have lived near UF give me any advice to start my housing search? I'm looking to rent a 1-2 BR apartment with pets of course! Any where to stay away from? Thanks!!

Hey guys, I was just wondering how many people are still on the waitlist and waiting to hear from UF? Congrats to everyone who has been accepted, good luck with everything!!

I'm currently on the OOS waitlist and am still waiting (desperately) to hear. I spoke to Ms. Chaparro earlier this week, and she told me calls are currently being made and that open spots (at least OOS) are few. I'm still hoping some will open up as time goes on, as Fl is my #1 choice (even though I have been accepted to another school and paid the $1000 🙂eek🙂 deposit!)

Hey everyone! I am currently a student at UF (pre vet) and am going to school elsewhere next year. BUT over the summer I will be traveling to help my sister, in NC, while her husband is away on training for the Marine Corps. She is pregnant and needs help to take care of her kitties and help babysit her other child.

I have 2 cats that need a place to stay over the summer. I am looking for someone who would be willing to foster my kitties over the summer. I will pay for EVERYTHING! Including litter and food etc. I would be willing to drop them off anywhere, within reason, near Gainesville.

I have asked all of my friends and family if they could take them while I go to my sister's, but no one is capable of taking them.

They are both up to date on all shots and have had a recent trip to the vet, with blood work and a fecal, all which came out normal.

If you are possibly interested in helping me out with my kitties, or know someone who is, please e-mail or PM me. My e-mail is [email protected]

Thanks ~Tanya

This will probably sound paranoid of me, lol, I guess because this whole year has been pretty surreal...but should we be expecting anything in the mail now that we have mailed our signed acceptance back to UF? I feel like since I have not received any kind of confirmation that it isn't real, ya know? If anyone out there has received a packet of some sort after accepting, please let me know so I can hurry up and call Lynnette!

I haven't received anything yet, although I did call Ms. Chaparro last Friday just to verify that my acceptance had been received and she confirmed that it had. So if it gives you peace of mind, it wouldn't be a bad idea to call her. I know she said that I wouldnt have to send a deposit because they dont require one, but I didnt ask about when they would be sending our packets. If you hear anything, please let me know!

I think I recived something in the beginnng of July last year- so don't sweat. I know the list of the incoming class has been confirmed, so if they didn't hear from you by now they would have called you.👍

Wondering if anyone knows when FAFSA loans will be processed? I just want to make sure that my loans will cover tuition and housing. Thanks

Hey guys,

So I am visiting my parents in Ocala for the weekend, and I kind of wanted to go visit the UF vet school on Monday, just to see what the facilities and everything looks like. Is this possible for someone to do? I also wanted to talk to someone in admissions but it's probably too late to try and arrange something since its already the weekend.

I have a lab tomorrow that is supposed to get out around 12:20, but anticipate being out around 11:30. If you want I can pm you my phone number- I'd be happy to show you aorund. Let me know.

Just heard from Lynnette about the planned freshman orientation for August 16-20th!!!! I guess we are going camping the last couple of days of that week!! Apparently there is no vet school orientation dance like they had last year!!
